8、EWORD IT (International Telecommunication Union) is the United Nations Specialized Agency in the field of telecommuni- cations. The ITU Telecommunication Standardization Sector (ITU-T) is a permanent organ of the 1“. The IT-T is responsible for studying technical, operating and tariff questions and

9、issuing Recommendations on them with a view to standardizing telecommunications on a worldwide basis. The World Telecommunication Standardization Conference (WTSC), which meets every four years, establishes the topics for study by the ITU-T Study Groups which, in their turn, produce Recommendations

10、on these topics. The approval of Recommendations by the Members of the IT-T is covered by the procedure laid down in WTSC Resolution No. 1. In some areas of information technology which fall within IT-Ts purview, the necessary standards are prepared on a collaborative basis with IS0 and IEC. NOTE In

11、 this Recommendation the term recognized operating agency (ROA) includes any individual, company, corporation or governmental organization that operates a public correspondence service. 20、Scope The basic requirement of an interaction channel is that the user be able to respond in some way to the Interactive Service (IS). This response may take the form of “voting“ for a particular participant in a competitor show, “purchasing“ goods demonstratedadvertised in a shopping channel progra

21、mme, etc. This would be achievable within a one-way (reverse direction) narrowband path. A higher level of interactivity might require that a user who has made a response to an IS be sent an acknowledgement. This might be the case where the consumer has made a credit card purchase from a shopping ch

22、annel via the basic interaction channel. That consumer would expect to receive an acknowledgement that his credit card transaction had been accepted. This level of interactivity would require a two-way interaction channel: one in the reverse direction and the other in the forward direction. A furthe

23、r level of interactivity would occur where, in response to information in the interactive service, the consumer requests further information on particular topics from the source of the service, or from a central database via the source of the IS. This would require that the forward channel be broadb

24、and. In this particular example, the reverse path would only need to be a narrowband one, but it is likely that applications will arise whereby the consumer will need to make a broadband responsekontribution to the IS and also receive a broadband “answer“ from the service source. This Supplement is

25、intended to explain the ways in which the network-independent protocols specified in Recommendation J.lll 2 can be used in conjunction with an interaction network as specified, for instance, in Recommendation J.113 I to implement the full range of Interactive Services (IS) complementing broadcast te

A broadcaster is able to transfer information to the end user, using the DVB MPEG-2 transport mechanisms as defined in sever

44、al DVB-related ETSI deliverables. In order to make a real interactive broadcast possible, end-user information has to be used. This is possible by feeding back information from the end user to an Interactive Service Provider (ISP). The ISP has contacts with the broadcaster and could even be the same

45、 organization, as shown in Figure 1. 46、ke a standardized way of transfemng information from the end user to the ISP. This has been accomplished by, on the one hand, a set of specifications for return channels by DVB (see e.g. Recommen- dation J. 1 13 i) for the lower layers of the OS1 stack and, on the other hand, the specification for n

47、etwork-independent protocols for interaction channels Recommendation J.111 2. Recommendation J.111 2 consists of protocol stacks for: - sending data from the broadcaster or ISP to the end consumers Set Top Box (STB) via the DVBMPEG-2 data transmission system; - - sending data from the ISP to the end

48、 consumers STB via the interaction channel; sending data from the ISP to the end consumers STB via the interaction channel and vice versa. The basis of Recommendation J. 1 1 1 2 is formed by Part 6 of the MPEG-2 standard (ISO/IEC 138 18 6) called Digital Storage Media Command and Control (DSM-CC) wi

49、th, for the interaction channel, the Internet Protocol (IP) as lower layer and the MPEG-2 Data Carousels as lower layer for the broadcast channel. Data can be content or application controi/application communication or other control data such as download. Content can consist of compressed video, compressed stills, compressed audio or. computer data, like files or whatever other information for the end user. In clause 6, the protocol stacks used are explained. First, however, in clause 5 the logical channels are explained. They are also used in DAVIC
