Parts covered by this specification shall meet all requirements defined herein for the appli- cable product and grade. CONTROL ITEM. Parts designated by the sy

12、mbol “0” are Control Items; affects compliance to Federal Regulations. 1. GRADES. Grades are designated by industry recognized numbers, where increasing numbers rep- resent increasing tensile strength, and by decimals of whole numbers representing variations at the same strength level. Table 1 shows

13、 required strength, chemistry, hardness, and grade identification marking on parts for each grade. Applications of grades to products are: Bolts and screws are limited to Grades 1, 2, 5, 5.2, 8, 8.1, 8.2 and 9. Grades 4 and 8.1 are limited to studs. Studs can also be specified in any other grade exc

14、ept 5.1. Grade 5.1 is limited to machine screws (sizes No. 4 through 318 inch diameter), and to sems (sizes No. 6 through 318 inch diameter) which are heat treated following assembly of the washer on the screw. Where Grade 5.1 is specified for machine screws or sems, either Grade 5 or Grade 5.2 is a

15、n accept- able alternate. 71 16 inch diameter sems are limited to Grade 5 or Grade 5.2. When Grade 5 is used for sems, screws and washers shall be heat treated before assembly. On studs 3/8 inch diameter and larger, one end of stud only shall be marked with conventional slash marks corresponding to grade level. - one or more of the alloying elements chromium, nickel, molybdenum or vanadium shal

23、l be present in the steel in sufficient quantity to assure that the specified strength proper- ties are met after oil quenching and tempering. Caution is advised when considering the use of class grade 9 bolts and screws. Capability of the bolt manufacturer, as well as the anticipated in-use environ

24、ment, should be considered, High strength products such as class grade 9, require rigid control of heat treating operations and careful monitoring of as-quenched hardness, surface discontinuities, depth of partial decarburization, and freedom from carburization. some environments may cause stress co

25、rrosion cracking of non-plated as well as electroplated products. Hex washer head and hex flange products without assembled washers shall have a core hardness not exceeding Rockwell C38 and a surface hardness not exceeding Rockwell 30N 57.5. Parts shall be made of steel conforming to limits specified in Table 1. In addition, Grade 8 parts shall be made of fine grain steel

27、, with hardenability that will produce a minimum hardness of Rockwell C 47 at the center of the threaded section one diameter from the end of the part after oil quenching. 2.2 HEADING PRACTICE. Bolts and screws made on automatic screw machines are not permitted. Grade 1 parts may be hot or cold head

28、ed. Grades 2, 5, 5.1, 5.2, 8, 8.1, 8.2 and 9 shall be cold headed in sizes up to 314 inch, inclusive, and in lengths up to 6 inches. Larger sizes and longer lengths may be hot or cold headed. 2.3 THREADING PRACTICE. Grades 2, 5. 5.1, 5.2, 8, 8.1, 8.2 and 9 bolts, screws, and sems shall be roll threa

29、ded in sizes up to 314 inch, inclusive, and in lengths up to 6 inches. Grade 1 parts and Grades 2, 5, 5.2, 8, 8.1, 8.2 and 9 bolts and screws in sizes over 314 inch, and/or longer than 6 inches, may be rolled, cut, or ground. Threads of all grades and sizes of studs may be rolled, cut, or ground. 2.

30、4 HEAT TREATMENT PRACTICE. Grade 1 bolts and screws, and Grades 1 and 2 studs need not be heat treated. Grade 2 cold headed carriage bolts, and other bolts and screws with thin heads, shall be stress relieved at 875F minimum. Grade 2 bolts and screws with hex and other standard heads may be similarl

31、y stress relieved to meet wedge tensile test requirements. Grade 5 bolts, screws, and studs shall be oil or water quench hardened and tempered at 800F minimum. Grade 5.1 and 5.2 machine screws and sems shall be quench hardened and tempered at 65OOF minimum. For Grade 5.1 sems, quenchants whose princ

32、ipal constituent is water shall not be used. Grade 8 bolts, screws, and studs shall be oil quench hardened and tempered at 800F minimum. When carbon restoration is used, it shall not be accomplished in the presence of nitro- gen compounds, such as in carbonitriding or cyaniding, and the surface hard

33、ness must be within the hardness requirements specified in Table 1. Grades 4 and 8.1 studs are manufactured from pretreated material and need no further heat treat- ment. 2.5 DECARBURIZATION. Unless otherwise specified, Grade 5,5.1,5.2.8,8.1,8.2 and 9 bolts, screws and studs shall conform to CLASS C

34、 unless CLASS B is specified, as described in SAE J121. 3. MECHANICAL REQUIREMENTS. Parts tested as defined in this specification shall meet requirements for proof load and minimum tensile strength as tabulated in Table 1. Test loads (in pounds) for specific diameters, grades, and thread series may

35、be calculated using values given in Table 1 and appropriate stress areas given in SAE J429. (See 2.2 and Figure 6) 3.6 BURSTS: 3

39、.6.1 Bursts in the flats of hex bolts and screws shall not exceed a width or an open depth of 0.010 inch plus 0.025 D, where D is the nominal bolt or screw size in inches. In addition, no burst shall extend into the bearing surface. 3.6.2 Flanges of bolts and screws shall not have more than one burs

40、t with a width greater than 0.005 inch plus 0.020 F or an open depth greater than 0.003 inch plus 0.012 F, and this one burst shall not exceed a width of 0.010 inch plus 0.040 F or an open depth of 0.006 inch plus 0.024 F, where F is the nominal flange diameter in inches. 3.6.3 Bursts at the periphe

41、ry of round head style screws shall not exceed an open width or depth of 0.010 inch plus 0.025 D, where D is the nominal screw size in inches. (See 2.3 and Figure 3) 3.7 SHEAR FAILURE. Shear failure on flanged bolts and screws shall not exceed a width of 0.020 for a depth greater than 0.030 F, where

42、 F is the nominal flange diameter in inches. (See 2.4 and Figure 3) 3.8 VOIDS ON BEARING SURFACE. Voids on the bearing surface of bolts and screws shall not exceed a depth of 0.010 inch and the combined area of all voids shall not exceed 5 per cent of the specified minimum area of the bearing surfac

43、e. (See 2.5 and Figure 4) 3.9 TOOL MARKS. Tool marks on the bearing surface shall not exceed a surface roughness height measurement of 110 microinches determined as the arithmetic average deviation from the mean surface. (See 2.8 and Figure 5) 3.10 NICKS AND GOUGES. Nicks and gouges located in the t

44、hreaded length shall not be of size and number which will interfere with assembly of the proper GO thread gage on the thread with the application of not more than 12 times D inch pounds of torbe, where D is the nominal bolt or screw size in inches. The manufacturer shall exercise due care during the

45、 manufacture and handling of bolts and screws to minimize the number and magnitude of nicks and gouges. 46、ll be inspected in accordance with the procedures outlined in 4.1 and 4.2 unless otherwise specified. 4.1 VISUAL INSPECTION. A representative sample* shall be picked at random from the lot. The sample shall be examined visually for quench cracks, bursts, shear failures, forging cracks, folds, tool m

47、arks, seams, voids on the bearing surface, and nicks and gouges. 4.1.1 If any bolts or screws are found with quench cracks or with folds at internal corners at or below the bearing surface, the lot shall be subject to rejection. 4.1.2 If any bolts or screws are found with seams, bursts, shear failur

48、es, forging cracks, tool marks, voids, or nicks and gouges which exceed the allowable limits as specified for the applicable type of discontinuity under Item 3, the lot shall be subject to rejection. 4.2 MAGNETIC ANALYSIS INSPECTION. The same sample (if acceptable by visual inspec- tion) shall then

49、be further examined for laps in threads and seams by magnetic inspection techniques (magna-glo, magna-flux, eddy current, etc.) . (NOTE: Other examining proce- dures may be used providing they have an equivalent ability to detect discontinuities of the size specified in 3.2 and 3.5) 4.2.1 All bolts or screws showing indications which could be interpreted as seams shall be set aside. From this group a secondary sample of those parts having the severest indi- cations shall be sectioned through the shank perpendicular to the axis, and etched for microscopic examinat
