Scope*1.1 These test methods for the calibration
3、of mechanical soilcompactors are for use in checking and adjusting mechanicaldevices used in laboratory compacting of soil and soil-aggregate in accordance with Test Methods D 698, D 1557 andother methods of a similar nature which might specify thismethod. Calibration for use with one method does no
4、t qualifythe equipment for use with another method.1.2 The weight of the mechanical rammer is adjusted asdescribed in 5.4 and 6.5 in order to provide that the mechanicalcompactor will produce the same result as the manual com-pactor.1.3 Two alternative procedures are provided as follows:SectionTest

Significance and Use3.1 Mechanical
10、compactors are commonly used to replacethe hand compactors required for Test Methods D 698 andD 1557 in cases where it is necessary to increase production.3.2 The design of mechanical compactors is such that it isnecessary to have a calibration process that goes beyonddetermining the mass and drop o
11、f the hammer.NOTE 1The quality of the result produced by this standard isdependent on the competence of the personnel performing it, and thesuitability of the equipment and facilities used. Agencies that meet thecriteria is Practice D 3740 are generally considered capable of competentand objective t
12、esting/sampling/inspection/and the like. Users of thisstandard are cautioned that compliance with Practice D 3740 does not initself assure reliable results. Reliable results depend on many factors;Practice D 3740 provides a means of evaluating some of those factors.1These test methods are under the

Apparatus4.1 For Test Method A, in addition to the apparatus require-ments specified in Test Methods D 698 and D 1557, thefollowing is required:4.1.1 Drying OvenThermostatically controlled oven,preferably of the forced-draft type, meeting the requirementsfor Specification E 145 and capable of main
16、taining a uniformtemperature of 140 6 5F (60 6 3C) throughout the dryingchamber.4.2 For Test Method B, in addition to the apparatus require-ments specified in Test Methods D 698 and D 1557, thefollowing are required:4.2.1 Lead Deformation ApparatusA lead deformationapparatus consisting of an anvil,
17、guide collar, and striking pin,as shown in Fig. 1.4.2.2 MicrometerA 1-in. or 25-mm outside micrometercaliper reading to 0.001 in. or 0.02 mm, for determining thelength of the lead cylinders. As an alternative, a dial compara-tor of equal accuracy may be used to determine either thelength of the lead
18、 cylinder, or of the complete lead deformationapparatus assembly. In order to measure the complete assem-bly, a dial comparator with a minimum opening of 2 in. (51mm) and a travel of 1 in. (25 mm) is required (see Fig. 2).NOTE 2The use of vernier calipers is not recommended since they canproduce err
19、oneous readings if not zeroed correctly of if the vernier caliperis not of high quality.4.2.3 Guide Sleeve PedestalA guide sleeve pedestal foruse with guide sleeves used to control the drop of the manualrammers in Test Methods D 698 and D 1557 (see Fig. 3).4.2.4 Test CylindersA supply of commerciall
20、y pure leadtest cylinders having individual weights such that the lightestcylinder is within 0.06 g of the heaviest, each having a lengthof 0.675 6 0.005 in. (17.1 6 0.1 mm) and a diameter of 0.3106 0.002 in. (7.87 6 0.05 mm).5A minimum of ten testcylinders is required for the calibration of one mec
21、hanicalcompactor. However, depending on circumstances, as many as100 test cylinders may be required.5. ProcedureTest Method A5.1 Thoroughly inspect the mechanical and manual compac-tors for evidence of wear, malfunction, and need of servicingand adjustment. Clean, adjust, and lubricate the compactor
22、s soas to meet all requirements of the manufacturer, and theapplicable method under which they will be used and for whichthe mechanical compactor is to be calibrated. Operate thecompactor for a minimum of 25 drops to cause friction in theparts to become constant, allowing the rammer to fall on soil
23、orother soft material.NOTE 3In order to provide satisfactory results, mechanical compac-tors must be in excellent working condition. Improper operation of theraising and release mechanisms can introduce serious errors.5.2 Obtain approximately 50 lb (23 kg) of soil classified asCL in accordance with
24、Classification D 2487. If excessivemoisture is present, dry the soil until it becomes friable. Dryingmay be in air or by use of a drying apparatus such that thetemperature of the sample does not exceed 140F (60C). Passthe soil through a No. 4 (4.75-mm) sieve conforming to therequirements of Specific
