7、work as a computer programmer, here in Shanghai. My main responsibility is to ensure that all the computer prograrmmes in the office are running correctly. I often have to write short, new programmes that do exactly what we need and I also have to correct any programmes that go wrong. I would like t

8、o continue doing this kind of job. Its something that Ive been interested in for many years and I think Im pretty good at it. However, the company that 1 work for doesnt offer many opportunities for further training, so Id like to get a job with another company. Actually, I work alone. I help my col

9、leagues from other departments whenever they need me. If Im not busy, I take a wall around the different departments and check that everything is OK. Yes, we often go out somewhere for dinner, particularly if a big project has just been finished. Some of my colleagues then go on to sing karaoke, but

10、 I make my excuses and go home at that point. Family I live with my wife and daughter in a flat fairly near the city centre. My wife works for a state-owned company and she gets this flat at a reduced rent. Were saving to buy our own flat in the future, since my wife would prefer to work for a priva

18、ire- works displays. Its much safer than allowing people to light fireworks in the streets. Apart from New Year, I like to surprise my wife on Valentines Day. I get either my parents or her parents to baby-sit and take her to a really classy restaurant. She always protests that its a waste of money,

The school was, and still is, only about ten minutes walk from my parents home here in Shanghai. It was a relatively small school, with onl

20、y a few hundred children there. I know that sounds like a big school, but in China even some primary schools have thousands of pupils. We learnt Chinese, maths, English, basic geography and Chinese history. We also had what I think Westerners call civics classes. These were lessons on how to behave.

21、 Our teachers were very strict, so at school we behaved very well. However, once the last bell had rung, we usually found something more interesting and mischievous to do. The school is rather unusual in that the main building is a converted church. After 1949, many churches were closed down and som

22、e were totally destroyed. However, the authorities decided to convert this one into a school. Im glad they did. 23、owadays than 20 years ago. Unfortunately, modem teaching methods have not changed much, so the focus is still on memo- rising information and passing exams. 24、se parents are prepared to spend a substantial proportion of their income on it. This means that children often study outside the state school system, perhaps with a tutor or in after-school classes. They usually study the same subjects as in their state school, but some schools specialise in teachi

25、ng art or music or foreign languages. I think that Western teaching methods will eventually be used across China, but I dont think it will happen soon. The whole system is too closely geared towards exams and factual learning, rather than developing skills such as the ability to think creatively or

26、understand how and why things work the way they do. In the near future, I think that there will be more contacts with schools abroad, particularly via the Internet-its too expensive for most parents to actually send their kids abroad. I would change the way subjects are taught to make teaching more

27、student centred. I would also follow the British system and combine the school-leaving exams with the university entrance ones. This would make things a little easier for those finishing high school and wishing to continue their education. I think that parents should only have to pay for a limited n

28、umber of things while their children are at primary and secondary schools, for example notebooks, pens and uniforms. I think that this allows everyone to have a decent basic education. I think that the government should subsidise undergraduate studies for students who get good enough grades, but tha

29、t students should pay part of the cost them- selves. The government could arrange for students loans to be available. Graduates could pay back these loans once they get jobs. I think that a good school should have high standards and not allow those standards to fall. Many schools are just interested

30、 in making money-in China this is sometimes even true in the state sector. Schools can achieve high standards by attracting the most highly qualified and experienced teachers with higher salaries. They can also only allow the best students to enter the school. This is what the best schools and universities do all over the world.
