2、n. 1 Relationships, trust and confidence are what matters most to all people and all nations. 2 Maintaining open market and free flows of commerce in both our nations will contribute to our shared prosperity. 3 National borders and regional differences are becoming less and less relevant as business
3、es increasingly operate in the global market. 4 Based on rapid advances in trade, finance, transportation, and communications, the world economy has become increasingly tightly knit. 5 A critical element of our long-term strategy in Asia is to seek to build strong relationships with rising powers in
4、cluding India, Indonesia and China. 6 And we see a China that is becoming one of the most dynamic and creative societies in the world as demonstrated by all the knowledge and potential right here in this room. 7 The major challenges of the 21st century, from climate change to nuclear proliferation t
5、o economic recovery, are challenges that touch both our nations, and challenges that neither of our nations can solve by acting alone. 8 As the marketplace becomes truly global, as barriers of distance, time, language and regulation diminish through the use of new communication technologies, the lev
6、el of competition among market participants has never been higher. 9 During the past decade, one of the most prominent themes sounded by policymakers, observers, and analysts of international economic developments has been “ globalization“. Undoubtedly, economies have become more integrated in recen
7、t decades. For example, U. S. trade with other industrialized countries has more than doubled over these years. Industrialized country trade with emerging market economies has experienced a far more dramatic increase. These increases in trade are the natural result of various forces. Transport costs
8、 have been a big factor. Air shipping costs have declined over time, although some of this has been eroded recently with greater security costs and the rise in fuel prices. Costs of ocean shipping have come down, due to containerization and bulk shipping. Policy-induced barriers, such as tariffs and
9、 other means of restraining international trade, also have declined. 10 I believe that the best way to advance American interests and values, and the best way to help the Cuban people improve their lives, is through engagement by normalizing relations between our governments and increasing the conta
10、cts between our peoples. Ive always said that change wont come to Cuba overnight. As Cuba opens up, it will mean more opportunities and resources for ordinary Cubans. And we are starting to see some progress. Americans companies are starting to do business in Cuba, helping to nurture private enterpr
11、ises and giving Cuban entrepreneurs new opportunities. With new Wi-Fi hotspots, more Cubans are starting to go online and get information from the outside world. In both our countries, theres overwhelming support for this new relationship. And in Cuba today, for the first time in a half century, the
12、re is hope for a different future, especially among Cubas young people who have such extraordinary talent and potential just waiting to be unleashed. 11 Good afternoon! My topic today is “Building Cross-Cultural Bridges to Create Happiness“. As more and more emerging markets reach economic independe
13、nce, millions of people are being pulled out of poverty. Prosperity tends to make people happy, at least to a certain level. In a compilation of 100 university studies on the topic of happiness, researchers from 50 different countries point to the fact that using the GDP of a nation or the net incom
14、e of an individual to assess the level of happiness people experience is entirely misleading. Money does NOT guarantee happiness. This explains why there are so many depressed and unhappy people in rich countries. The factor that plays the biggest role when it comes to peoples happiness is the quali
15、ty of ones interpersonal relationships and the level of trust we are able to develop in each other. This being said, if building trust and establishing relationships are the foundation of our happiness, succeeding in doing so across cultures is quite tricky as people do not automatically anchor thei
16、r trust in the same values. Richard Lewis, the leading cross-cultural expert, has identified that to build trust with someone from a “linear“ culture, such as the United States or Germany, being direct, punctual, following through and being law-abiding will be necessary. Displaying those values when
17、 interacting with someone from Brazil will however not automatically lead towards trust building, as “ multi-active“ people crave other values, such as paying attention to their emotions and being family-oriented. “ Reactive“ cultures on the other hand, such as China or Vietnam build trust by displa
18、ying great courtesy towards one another, being mindful of the common obligations shared as a society, being indirect in communicating. Because each of us is the by-product of the culture that raised us, we are by default blind-sided by our own values, unconsciously and wrongly assuming that what rin
19、gs true to one, what is self-evident and well-known within our tribe is also self-evident across cultures. And because culture conditions every aspect of our lives, it is very difficult to remain aware of its invisible impact when interacting with people who have not been culturally conditioned the
20、way we have. Knowing that our happiness heavily relies on building trust and meaningful relationships, knowing that a considerable amount of our time is spent at work and in the case of a growing population interacting across cultures when at work, it is essential to develop the skills that will all
21、ow us to better understand one another. Imagine a world where instead of judging a person based on the differences he or she projects when interacting with us, we would question the validity of our own positioning, pausing to assess if those differences could be culturally rooted. I challenge you to
22、 give it a try: for the next three weeks, each time you feel disappointment creeping in when interacting with someone from a different culture, ask yourself: did that person receive the same rules of conduct that you have? Does that person share your values? By forcing your brain to slow down, to pa
23、use and not automatically rely on its pre-existing frames of references, you will start looking at situations, conversations, and interactions differently. You will give yourself an opportunity to build trust with people from different cultures and through that process you will find you become H-A-P
