14、en. Today, we are going to talk about five bad study habits. Have you ever wondered how you can bomb a test after studying for hours? A poor test result after many hours of faithful studying is a real confidence buster! If this happens to you, its possible that your current study habits are failing

15、you! But you can turn it around. The process of learning is still a little mysterious, but studies do show that the most effective process for studying involves highly active behaviour over a period of time. In other words, to study effectively, you must read, draw, compare, memorize, and test yours

16、elf over time. The following study habits are least helpful when used alone. Firstly,1taking linear notes.2Linear notes are lecture notes that students take when they attempt to write down every word of a lecture. Linear notes occur when a student tries to write every word a lecturer says in sequenc

17、e, like writing a rambling essay with no paragraphs. You may be wondering: How can it be bad to capture every word of a lecture? Its not bad to capture every word of a lecture, but it is bad to think youre studying effectively if you dont mess with your linear notes in some way. You must revisit you

18、r linear notes and make relationships from one section to another. You should draw arrows from one related word or concept to another, and make a lot of notes and examples in the margins. Now here comes our solution to this bad habit. To reinforce information and to make it sink in, you must also re

19、create all your class notes in another form.3You have to revisit the information and put it all into a chart or shrinking outline. Right before every new lecture, you should review your notes from days past and predict the next days material.4You should reflect and make relationships between key con

20、cepts before you sit down for a new lecture.5You should prepare for your exams by creating a fill-in-the-blank test from your notes. Secondly, highlighting the book. Are you guilty of highlighter abuse? Reckless highlighting is the root cause for many bad test grades! Bright colours on a page make a

21、 big visual impact, so it seems like a lot of good studying is going on when you read and highlight.6Highlighting does make important information stand out on a page, but that doesnt do you much good if you dont do something active with that information. Reading highlighted words again and again is

22、not active enough. Our solution to this is to use the information you highlight to create a practice exam.7Put highlighted words onto flashcards and practice until you know every term and concept. Identify key concepts and use them to create practice essay questions.8You should also develop a colour

23、-coded highlighting strategy. Highlight new words in one colour and new concepts in another, for example. You could also highlight separate topics according to a colour code for more impact. Thirdly, rewriting notes.9Students rewrite notes under the assumption that repetition is good for memorizatio

24、n. Repetition is valuable as a first step, but its not that effective all alone. You should rewrite your notes in the shrinking outline method, but follow up with self-testing methods. Better still,10switch class notes with a classmate and create a practice exam from his/her notes. Exchange practice

25、 exams to test each other.11Repeat this process a few times until you are comfortable with the material. Fourthly, rereading the chapter. Students are often encouraged to re-read a chapter on the night before an exam to reinforce what theyve learned. Rereading is a good tactic as a last step. Just l

26、ike the other study habits mentioned above, rereading is only one part of a puzzle.12My advice is that make sure to use active steps like charts, shrinking outlines, and practice tests and follow up with rereading your chapter. Fifthly, memorizing definitions. Students spend a lot of time using flas

27、hcards to memorize definitions. This is a good study method, as long as its a first step in the process of learning. As students progress through the grade levels, they are expected to progress in cognitive skills. Once youve exited middle school, you cant expect to do well in an exam by memorizing

28、the definitions of terms. You must learn to memorize a definition and then define the significance of the new vocabulary terms you encounter. If youre in high school or college, you should be prepared to explain how terms are relevant in the subject, compare them to similar concepts, and explain why

29、 they matter at all. Heres a real life example: 1. In middle school you might learn to memorize the definition of propaganda. 2. In high school you might encounter this as a term, but youll need to memorize the definition and learn to recognize propaganda materials from World War II and other times.

30、 3. In college you should be able to define propaganda, come up with examples from the past and from today, and explain how propaganda has affected different societies at different times. Our solution to this is something like this: Once you have memorized the definitions of your terms,13give yourse

31、lf a short essay practice test.14Make sure you are able to define a term and explain why it is significant.15Be able to compare and contrast your term to other terms of similar significance. The act of testing and retesting yourself somehow makes the information stick. OK. I have explained five bad

Beginning with the womens suffrage movement and continuing through to the present day many legal and social barriers to womens equality with me

41、n have been removed. Much progress has been made. With that in mind coeducation which is based on that laudable theme of equality seems like the right way to go. Thats why most private and public schools use the coeducation model. Most of the time that works well. On the other hand some research see

42、ms to suggest that boys and girls learn in different ways. Research shows that a girls brain is different from a boys brain. If you accept that premise, coeducation probably will not work satisfactorily for every child. Coeducation does have the advantage of being politically acceptable. Recently pu

43、blic schools have begun to experiment with single-sex classes, and, in some cases, single-sex schools. Now, more about the research about single-sex school. Perhaps the most revealing research on single-sex versus coeducation is Single-Sex Versus Coeducational Schooling: A Systematic Review.3This st

44、udy was commissioned by the Federal Department of Education and was released in 2005. What were its conclusions?4Basically it seems to conclude that there is not enough evidence to suggest single-sex education is better than coeducation or vice-versa. Another national study from UCLA Graduate School

45、 of Education & Information Studies claims to show that5girls from single-sex schools have an edge over their co-ed peers. Thirdly, is single-sex school the right setting for your child? Some children thrive in a single-sex school. Why?6For one thing, the social pressures can be gentler. Your child

46、can grow at his own pace. This often is a good thing for boys as they mature later than girls. The faculty at single-sex schools understand how their students learn. They adapt their teaching styles to those specific needs. There are other advantages as well.7For example, since a single-sex school i

47、s basically homogeneous, that simplifies planning events and activities as you only have to consider boys or girls as the case may be. The conventional thinking thirty years ago was that coeducation would somehow break down gender stereotypes. But that didnt always happen. The proponents of single-s

48、ex education argue that boys in coeducational settings are less likely to take courses in the arts or tackle advanced academic subjects simply to avoid being typecast as a nerd. Similarly girls avoid the sciences and technology subjects because they dont want to appear to be tomboys. Single-sex schools are flourishing once again as parents realize that allowing their son or daughter to learn in his or her own individual way is a very important consideration in choosing a school. Now, lets look at three
