2、is only a partial solution, for the monotonous rhythm of the wheels clicking on the rails soon lulls you to sleep. During the day, sleep comes in snatches. At night, when you wish to go to sleep you rarely manage to do so. If you are lucky enough to get a couchette, you spend half the night staring
3、at the small blue light in the ceiling, or fumbling to find your passport when you cross a frontier.【 R2】 _Long car journeys are even less pleasant, for it is quite impossible even to read. On motorways you can, at least, travel fairly safely at high speeds, but more often than not, the greater part
4、 of the journey is spent on narrow, bumpy roads which are crowded with traffic. 【 R3】_ You can stretch your legs on the spacious decks, play games, swim, meet interesting people and enjoy good food always assuming, of course, that the sea is calm. If it is not, and you are likely to get seasick, no
5、form of transport could be worse. Even if you travel in ideal weather, sea journeys take a long time. 【 R4】 _ Aeroplanes have the reputation of being dangerous and even hardened travelers are intimidated by them. They also have the grave disadvantage of being the most expensive form of transport.【 R
6、5】 _Traveling at a height of 30, 000 feet, far above the clouds, and at over 500 miles an hour is an exhilarating experience. You do not have to devise ways of talking your mind off the journey, for an aeroplane gets you to your destination rapidly. 【 R6】 _The real escapist can watch a free film sho
7、w and sip champagne on some services. But even when such refinements are not available, there is plenty to keep you occupied. An aeroplane offers you an unusual and breathtaking view of the world.【 R7】 _You really see the shape of the land. If the landscape is hidden from the view, you can enjoy the
8、 extraordinary sight of unbroken cloud plains that stretch out for miles before you, while the sun shines brilliantly in a clear sky. The journey is so smooth that there is nothing to prevent you from reading or sleeping. 【 R8】 _You will not have to spend the next few days recovering from a long and
9、 arduous journey. A. You soar effortlessly over high mountains and deep valleys. B. But nothing can match them for speed and comfort. C. Train compartments soon get cramped and stuffy. D. 12、t 10:00 am, and end at 12:00 am. On the first day, when the professor arrived on time, no one was in the classroom. Many students came after 10:00 am. Several arrived after 10:30 am. Another two students came after 11:00 am.【 R2】_Were these students being rude? He decided to study the students behav
13、ior. The professor talked to the American and Brazilian students about lateness in both an informal and formal situation: lunch with a friend, and a university class, respectively.【 R3】 _If they had a lunch appointment with a friend, the average American student defined lateness as 19 minutes after
14、the agreed time. 【 R4】 _ In an American university, students are expected to arrive at the appointed hour.【 R5】 _Classes not only begin at the scheduled time in the United States, but they also end at the scheduled time. In the Brazilian class, only a few students left the class at noon, many remain
15、ed past 12:30 to discuss the class and ask more questions. While arriving late may not be very important in Brazil, neither is staying late. 【 R6】 _People from Brazilian and North American cultures have different feelings about lateness. In Brazil, the students believe that a person who usually arri
16、ves late is probably more successful than a person who is always on time.【 R7】_Consequently, if a Brazilian is late for an appointment with a North American, the American may misinterpret the reason for the lateness and become angry. As a result of his study, the professor learned that the Brazilian
17、 students were not being disrespectful to him.【 R8】 _Eventually, the professor was able to adapt his own behavior to feel comfortable in the new culture. A.
