Issues in the recruitment world In the competitive world of investment banking, good senior executives are not easy to find. So what shoul

10、d the industrys hard-pressed directors do when they need to find senior staff? Increasingly, they decide to call in the headhunters. These are busy and profitable times for the recruitment agencies that dominate the world of executive search and selection. They needed new people to revitalise their

11、operations, and the result has been a boom in the recruitment market. Pinnacle, a leading recruitment agency, has helped various UK investment banks to rebuild their entire senior management teams. It is hard to overstate the significance of this. (8) But now everything has changed, and Pinnacle is

12、not the only major player in the field. Some analysts believe that rival recruitment specialists ALT Associates has a larger share of the market. However, there is little doubt that over its 13-year history, Pinnacle and its chairman, Matthew Edwards, have built up an impressive reputation. Edwards

13、estimates that his company controls between 10 and 15 per cent of the headhunting market for senior investment banking jobs in the UK. (9) Rather, it is the high-calibre jobs and people that Pinnacle deals with that define the companys success. For example, the company was recently commissioned to f

14、ind a new chairman for NBS Bank, a vacancy that was one of the most talked about in the banking world. Most HR directors recognise that headhunters such as Pinnacle play a valuable role in the recruitment process. (10) Some are concerned that a few companies, including Pinnacle, have too much power

15、over high-level recruitment. (11) As Tim Davidson, HR Director at Cawfield Bank, explains, They can be kingmakers. These are the people who decide who gets a future and who doesnt. If Edwards forms a view about an individual, it can affect their ability to get a particular job. That view could just

16、have been formed on a bad day. (12) Final decisions in the selection process are always taken by his clients, he says, whoever they are. The role of headhunters should not be exaggerated. Many companies never use them. But as top executives are hard to find, there will always be a role for people li

24、nform you of company direction that may affect your future aspirations, He/she can put in a good word for you in the right eats. He/she is also your ally when you need back up, support or cooperation from other departments. But how does this help you establish a meaningful working relationship with

25、your boss? The key is communication. Know your boss priorities and try to anticipate his/her needs before he/she asks. Dont think narrowly in terms of your own immediate position. Try to understand where what you do ties in with the bigger picture. What other things can you discover about your boss?

26、 Is he/she conservative or informal? Does he/she prefer to be greeted as Mr. Ms. Miss or Mrs. or prefer first names? Is his/hers an “open door“ policy or does he/she prefers you setting appointments with them? Respect your boss time. Never barge into their office expecting or demanding an hearing im

27、mediately. Does he/she prefer to be kept informed with progress reports, or prefer you show initiative and get on with the job? Dont be a “yes man“ and dont offer false flattery in the hope of getting somewhere. It wont work! And dont aim for “closeness“ in the working relationship because this can

28、also backfire. If your boss depends upon you too much. he/she wont recommend you for promotions because you are needed too much where you are. Another possibility is that if he/ she is not a good manager, he/she may be given their marching orders. If you are seen to be a part of his/her management m

29、ishaps, you may be marching out the door with him/her! Do what you can to stay in his/her good books. Dont take “sickies“ unless you are sick! Be an effective, cooperative, responsible and courteous employee and team player. It is possible that you are already these things, and you are working for s

30、omebody whose management style disagrees with your needs or expectations. Maybe friction cannot be avoided. Then, you may be better off looking for a new job in a new department or company. In short, getting along with your boss entails getting to know his/her likes and dislikes and learning to work
