14、d technical accuracy. But can a ventilation standard fulfill these objectives and still meet the needs of design- ers, building operators and code officials? This is one of the central issues debated during an ASHRAE Journal roundtable that involved key members of the committee revising Standard 62,
15、 experienced engi- neers and building operations professionals. The purpose of the event was to provide a forum for different points of view within ASHRAE. The dialogue, which starts on Page 30, also provides perspective on some of the fundamental issues that have complicated revision of ANSIIASHRAE
16、 Standard 62-1989, Ventilation ,for Accept- able Indoor Air Quality. THE U.S. Department of Education and General Accounting Office estimates that 6,000 new schools will be needed over the next decade to accommodate three million more students. In addition, many of the 80.000 existing schools are mo
17、re than 50 years old and need extensive renovation. Its against this backdrop that ASHRAE Journal decided to develop the Practical Guide to HVAC for Schools, a supplement to this issue. The articles are written by practicing professionals with ample experience in their respective topics. The supplem
18、ent editor is Ken Elovitz, P.E., Member ASHRAE, who also edited the Journals two previous practical guides: Practical Guide to Motors and Drives, and Practical Guide to Building Controls. The Journals fourth Practical Guide, planned for November, will cover museums and monumental spaces. LAWRENCE H.
19、 (Larry) Darrow retired in 1995 after 19 years as ASHRAEs art director, but hes still contributing. Darrow provided the cover for this edition, as well as the abstract painting of the sound laboratory on the cover of Februarys edition. The work illustrates an article by Presidential Member H.E. Barn
20、ey Burroughs, Fellow ASHRAE, and Kevin E. Kinzer. The article describes a study of filter efficiency that uses a new test method, ASHRAE Standard 52.2P. The test establishes the mini- mum efficiency of particulate filters over a range of 12 size fractions, from 0.3 to 10 microns, over the full loadi
21、ng cycle of the filter. Also this month: Guiliano Todesco, P.E., Member ASHRAE, quantifies the benefits of mechanical and architectural optimization in Eficiency Through Design Integration. Mukesh K. Khattar, Ph.D., P.E., Member ASHRAE, describes possible solutions to refrigerant-related challenges
