14、d technical accuracy. But can a ventilation standard fulfill these objectives and still meet the needs of design- ers, building operators and code officials? This is one of the central issues debated during an ASHRAE Journal roundtable that involved key members of the committee revising Standard 62,

15、 experienced engi- neers and building operations professionals. The purpose of the event was to provide a forum for different points of view within ASHRAE. The dialogue, which starts on Page 30, also provides perspective on some of the fundamental issues that have complicated revision of ANSIIASHRAE

16、 Standard 62-1989, Ventilation ,for Accept- able Indoor Air Quality. THE U.S. Department of Education and General Accounting Office estimates that 6,000 new schools will be needed over the next decade to accommodate three million more students. In addition, many of the 80.000 existing schools are mo

17、re than 50 years old and need extensive renovation. Its against this backdrop that ASHRAE Journal decided to develop the Practical Guide to HVAC for Schools, a supplement to this issue. The articles are written by practicing professionals with ample experience in their respective topics. The supplem

18、ent editor is Ken Elovitz, P.E., Member ASHRAE, who also edited the Journals two previous practical guides: Practical Guide to Motors and Drives, and Practical Guide to Building Controls. The Journals fourth Practical Guide, planned for November, will cover museums and monumental spaces. LAWRENCE H.

19、 (Larry) Darrow retired in 1995 after 19 years as ASHRAEs art director, but hes still contributing. Darrow provided the cover for this edition, as well as the abstract painting of the sound laboratory on the cover of Februarys edition. The work illustrates an article by Presidential Member H.E. Barn

20、ey Burroughs, Fellow ASHRAE, and Kevin E. Kinzer. The article describes a study of filter efficiency that uses a new test method, ASHRAE Standard 52.2P. The test establishes the mini- mum efficiency of particulate filters over a range of 12 size fractions, from 0.3 to 10 microns, over the full loadi

21、ng cycle of the filter. Also this month: Guiliano Todesco, P.E., Member ASHRAE, quantifies the benefits of mechanical and architectural optimization in Eficiency Through Design Integration. Mukesh K. Khattar, Ph.D., P.E., Member ASHRAE, describes possible solutions to refrigerant-related challenges

24、 Exh i b ition By Roy S. Smith MILAN, Italy-Mostra Convegno Expo (MCE) is one of the worlds most impor- tant building service shows. In addition to meeting customers and making new contacts, the show affords the opportu- nity to study a vast range of equipment from nearly 3,000 firms and to attend c

25、on- ferences addressing a wide range of cur- rent industry topics. Strong Representation This years show, the 31st edition, dem- onstrated visible signs of recovery for the Italian building industry, with 1998 pro- duction forecast to reach 233,969 billion Lire ($133 billion), as compared to approxi

26、- mately 222,086 billion Lire ($126 billion) in 1997. However, the Italian market re- mains far from buoyant since more than 59% of work consists of renovation and maintenance. A downturn in the market usually re- sults in iridustry marketing budget cuts, which means fewer exhibitors. But this was n

27、ot the case in Italy-on the con- trary, more companies than ever attended this years show (see sidebar). With 1 I6 exhibitors, American firms represented the second largest contin- gent. Those noted included Baltimore Aircoil, Carrier and its Italian subsidiary Delchi, Copeland, Honeywell, Lennox, M

28、cQuay, Ranco, Reznor, Ridge Tool, Selkirk, Trane, White Rogers and York, which also exhibited with aEuropean sub- sidiary. Many other US. companies were seen on the stands of distributors, among them Armstrong Machine Works, Barry Blower, Chicago Blower, Dri-Steem, Dwyer Instruments and Little Giant

29、. Following its initiation at the 1996 event, Servitis, the heating and plumbing services “show within a show” returned to this years Expocomfort. Promoted by trade association AMIC, the Servitis venue featured 27 exhibitors that mainly offer services such as management, soft- ware design, publishin

30、g, corporate consultancy, franchising, approvals and professional training. While the statistics of this show are impressive, it must be kept in mind that MCE covers a much wider product range than, for example, the International Air- conditioning, Heating, Refrigerating Expo (AHR Expo). Certification pro- grams are adminis- t

37、ered in Europe by Eurovent and in the U.S. by the Air- Conditiong and Re- frigeration Institute (ARI), said Menzer, Mark Menzer ARIs vice president of engineering and research. There are a number of differences between the two programs. Equipment, he said, is tested and cer- tified to Eurovent in ac

38、cordance with IS0 Standard 5 15 1 using the calorimeter method or in accordance with Eurovent 616 using the air enthalpy method. AR1 certification programs are certified to AR1 Standards 2101240 and 3401360. The dif- ferent standards specify different rating conditions and tolerances for testing. Eu

39、rovent certifies equipment for both comfort cooling and process cooling, whereas ARIs certification only applies to comfort cooling. One major difference between Europe and the US. is that sea- sonal performances are certified in the U.S. and not in Europe. The US. certifies sea- sonal performance i

40、n terms of Seasonal En- ergy Efficiency Ratio (SEER) for cooling and Heating Seasonal Performance Factor (HSPF) for heating. Part load performances are certified in the U.S. for equipment above 135,000 Btu/h (39 568 W) in terms of Integrated Part Load Value (IPLV). AC equipment in Europe can be cert

41、i- fied under one of three certification pro- grams: AC1 (up to 12 kW), AC2 (between 12 kW and 45 kW), and AC3 (between 45 kW to 1 00 kW).
