Trane began the withdrawal by deciding in 1992 to par- ticipate biennially. Jim Schult

17、z, executive vice president of the firms North American Commer- cial Group, said Trane made the deci- sion because the company feels it can do a better job of communicating new product and software developments through other media, including a travel- ing showcase. Dodge, a

24、 division of McGraw Hill. Robert A. Murray, a spokesperson for F.W. Dodge, said 1997 wont come close to the 8% growth in 1996, but should finish the year up 2-3%. A bright spot for Septem- ber was a 28% surge in office buildings, fueled by several large projects. Murray said office vacancy rates con

25、tinue to re- cede in 1997, with suburban vacancy rates now at 10%. “With vacancy rates dropping and rents rising in may metro- politan areas, the long-depressed office market is turning into one of the growth sectors for the construction industry,” said Murray. API Completes Expansion BUFFALO-API He

26、at Transfer, a sub- sidiary of American Precision Indus- tries, has completed an 82,000 ft2 (7600 m2) facility in Arcade, N.Y. for its API Airtech operation. The $4.5 million plant is twice the size of the previous plant, also in Arcade, and will house more than 40 additional employees. API Airtech

The new company unites the engi- neering expertise, manufacturing facilities and trained work force of Des Champs with SnyderCapit

29、als financial backing. Nicholas H. Des Champs, Ph.D., P.E., will serve as director and chairman of Entro- dyne. Richard W. Snyder, chairman of SnyderCapital, will serve as an Entrodyne director. DLI develops energy recovery, air-conditioning and indoor air quality products. Des Champs says Entrodyne

30、 will seek to acquire other companies with attributes similar or complementary to DLI. Insulation Report Released ALEXANDRIA, Va.-A preliminary study by the North American Insulation Manufacturers Association indicates that airtighteness of a house is dependent on factors other than type of insulati

31、on. The study by G.K. Yuill, Ph.D., of Penn State University tested fiber glass baas and wet- spray cellulose insulation for resistance to airflow through the wall cavities of two houses. Researchers found it impossible to determine which material provided a more airtight structure. Yuill concluded

32、that the difference between types of insu- lation had little influence on airtightness. Crispaire Is Part of AirxceI WICHITA, Kan.-Crispaire Corporation has been acquired by Airxcel, a new cor- poration formerly known as Recreation Vehicle Products. Wichita-based Airxcel operates as two divisions. T

33、he Crispaire Division, which has manufacturing plants in Norcross and Cordele, Ga., makes specialty heating and air-condi- tioning roducts under the Marvair and E-Tech trade names. Its customers are primarily telecommunications compa- nies. The RV Products Division makes Coleman-Mach recreation vehi

LOUIS-White-Rodgers Division of Emerson Electric Co. has reorganized into two business groups to better serve its distin

35、ctive OEM and distribution mar- kets. “This major restructuring will en- able both business groups to focus on core businesses, and increase overall re- sponsiveness to our customers,” said John Cichy, White-Rodgers president. Ron Miles, a 20-year White-Rodgers em- ployee, will head the distribution

Alliance to Test Fuel Cells PALO ALTO, Calif.-The Electric Pow- er Research Institute (EPRI) and Ameri- can Power Corporation of Boston have announced a collaborative alliance to field test and evaluate small, 3 kW

37、 fuel cell systems for residential and small commercial markets. The tests will eval- uate up to 25 “alpha series” fuel cell sys- tems to assess their potential for serving users with power requirements in the 1- 50 kW range. With a political history that encourages delegation of authority to those levels of government closest to the people, the U.S. system of building codes includes various layers of government. The federal government, several territories, 50 states and local jurisdictions (whether

42、city, county or regional) adopt and enforce an array of complex (and often competing) rules, regulations, processes and procedures related to the built environment. In the U.S., there are over 44,000 governmental jurisdictions, almost all of which adopt some form of five major sets of construction c

43、odes and over 2000 technical standards. The result in many sit- uations is an expensive and confusing system for all affected par- ties (the construction community, governments, financial and enhance compliance with model codes and standards. Positive results could reduce time delays and constructio

44、n costs. Public-sector segments can better determine at which level of government certain aspects of the siting, design and con- struction of buildings are best regulated.
