Clay can be found almost anywhere. Good pottery clay must be free from all small stones and other hard materials that would make
4、 the potting process difficult. Most North American artisan potters now purchase commercially processed clay, but some find the clay they need right in the earth, close to where they work. The most important tools potters use are wooden modeling tools, plain wire and sponges. Plain wire is used to c
5、ut away the finished pot from its base on the potters wheel. 4. After a finished pot is dried of all its moisture in the open air, it is placed in a kiln and fired. The first firing hardens the pottery, and it is then ready to be glazed and fired again. 5. For areas where they do not want any glaze,
6、 such as the bottom of the pot, artisans paint on melted wax that will later burn off the kiln. They then pour on the liquid glaze and let it run over the clay surface, making a kind of decorative pattern that they want. 14、o the pianist in certain cases, and in the larger movie theaters small orchestras were formed. For a number of years the selection of music for each film program rested entirely in the hands of the conductor or leader of the orchestra, and very often the principal qualification for holding such a po
15、sition was not skill or taste so much as the ownership of a large personal library of musical pieces. Since the conductor seldom saw the films until the night before they were to be shown(if, indeed, the conductor was lucky enough to see them then), the musical arrangement was normally improvised in
16、 the greatest hurry. 4. To help meet this difficulty, film-distributing companies started the practice of publishing suggestions for musical accompaniments. In 1909, for example, the Edison Company began issuing with their films such indications of mood as “pleasant“, “sad“, “lively“. The suggestion
17、s became more explicit, and so emerged the musical cue sheet containing indications of mood, the titles of suitable pieces of music, and precise directions to show where one piece led into the next. 5.
