7、ended to sense and interrupt high magnitude overcurrentconditions in a prescribed range of short circuit current values, limiting both the time and peak current ofthe short circuit. Fault Limiters open the circuit within an interval equal to or less than the first major orsymmetrical current loop du

8、ration; limiting the peak current to a value less than the available peak current.1.2 Fault Limiters may be designed such that the interrupting portions are field replaceable.1.3 These requirements cover Fault Limiters rated up to 1000 V ac maximum.1.4 These requirements are intended to be used in c

9、onjunction with the requirements in the Standard forLow-Voltage Fuses Part 1, General Requirements, UL 248-1, hereafter referred to as UL 248-1, exceptas modified or supplemented by this Outline of Investigation, hereafter referred to as Outline.1.5 This Outline does not include the requirements for

10、 devices that sense and interrupt overcurrentconditions solely by use of a current responsive element. Requirements for these types of devices can befound in the UL 248 Series of Fuse Standards.1.6 Devices covered by this Outline are not intended to be used as branch circuit overcurrent protection.1

11、.7 Fault Limiters are intended for installation in switchgear, switchboards, and the like or in locationsaccessible only to qualified personnel in accordance with the NFPA 70, “National Electric Code” (NEC).The acceptability of the combination of a Fault Limiter with respect to any end product shall

12、 be determinedas part of the end-product evaluation.1.8 This standard does not cover effects of excessive sound or pressure.2 Components2.1 Except as indicated in 2.2, a component of a product covered by this Outline shall comply with therequirements for that component.2.2 A component is not require

13、d to comply with a specific requirement that:a) Involves a feature or characteristic not required in the application of the component in theproduct covered by this Outline orb) Is superseded by a requirement in this Outline.2.3 A component shall be used in accordance with its rating established for

17、1.Note that not all definitions in UL 248-1 are applicable to Fault Limiters covered by this Outline.5.2 CONTROL BOX An enclosure housing control components of the Fault Limiter.5.3 TRIGGER LEVEL The predetermined current level, rate of rise of current, integrated logic, or anycombination of these,

18、as defined by the manufacturer, where the current interrupting sequence is initiated.5.4 TRIGGER LOGIC The control components that determine whether interrupting functionality of theFault Limiter is initiated based on the input from the current sensing device.CONSTRUCTION6 General6.1 Fault limiters

19、generally sense and interrupt the short circuit current as follows:6.2 Fault limiters generally sense and interrupt the short circuit current as follows:a) Current transformers or other current sensing device sense the current, and send an outputto a control box, which may be integral to, or remote

20、from, the main portion of the fault limiter,andb) The control box initiates the interrupting sequence based on predetermined current level, rateof rise of current, integrated logic, or any combination of these, as defined by the manufacturer,signaling the interrupters to interrupt the circuit.JUNE 2

21、9, 2018 UL 3801 5UL COPYRIGHTED MATERIAL NOT AUTHORIZED FOR FURTHER REPRODUCTION ORDISTRIBUTION WITHOUT PERMISSION FROM UL7 Control Boxes7.1 Control boxes used with Fault Limiters shall be complete enclosures that comply with the enclosurerequirements of the Standard for Enclosure for Electrical Equ

22、ipment, Non-Environmental Considerations,UL 50.7.2 Control boxes may be assigned one or more enclosure type designations. The devices shall complywith the requirements of the Standard for Enclosure for Electrical Equipment, EnvironmentalConsiderations, UL 50E for each assigned type designation when

23、installed.8 Internal Control and Secondary Wiring8.1 An insulated conductor provided as part of a control circuit or secondary wiring shall be rated for theparticular application and shall have an ampacity not less than the continuous current rating of the circuitin which it is connected. Where load

24、s are of an intermittent nature, such as in trip circuits, conductors shallbe sized to provide their intended function with respect to voltage drop and mechanical strength.8.2 Wiring shall be located or protected to prevent contact with any sharp edge or moving part that coulddamage the insulation.8

25、.3 Insulated conductors shall be separated from wiring and uninsulated live parts connected to othercircuits, unless both circuits are provided with insulation rated for the highest voltage.9 External Wiring9.1 External wiring used for interconnection of control boxes shall comply with the Standard

26、for IndustrialControl Equipment, UL 508, for external interconnections and supply connections.10 Creepage and Clearance Distance10.1 No minimum creepage or clearance distances are specified for the interrupting portion of FaultLimiters.10.2 Creepage and clearance distances between live parts of Faul

27、t Limiters and grounded dead metalparts shall comply with the Standard for Metal-Enclosed Low-Voltage Power Circuit Breaker Switchgear,UL 1558, Table 12.1 for the voltage rating involved.10.3 Creepage and clearance distances within control circuits of Fault Limiters shall comply with thecreepage and

29、 NOT AUTHORIZED FOR FURTHER REPRODUCTION ORDISTRIBUTION WITHOUT PERMISSION FROM UL11 Operation11.1 Devices that have provisions for disabling the interrupting function shall have provisions for local andremote indication that the device has been disabled.11.2 Local indication shall be provided using

30、 an indicating LED or lamp.11.3 Remote indication shall be provided using one or more of the following means:a) An auxiliary switch or relay.b) Signaling through a SCADA system.11.4 Fault Limiters may be provided with visual or remote indication that circuit interruption has occurred.RATINGS12 Gener

31、al12.1 Fault Limiters shall have the following ratings:a) Maximum rated voltage;b) Continuous current rating;c) Maximum fault current;d) Minimum trigger level fault current (if a minimum current is required for proper operation);e) Rated control voltage;f) Control Box Enclosure type rating(s), where

33、N ORDISTRIBUTION WITHOUT PERMISSION FROM ULMARKINGS13 General13.1 Devices shall be marked with the complete electrical ratings identified in 12.1. The marking shall beon a portion of the interrupter assembly that is not intended to be replaceable in the field.13.2 If a manufacturer produces or assem

34、bles Fault Limiters at more than one factory, each finishedsection shall have a distinctive marking, that may be in code, by which it may be identified as the productof a particular factory.13.3 Each control box shall be marked to identify it as part of the Fault Limiter, “Control Box only for Fault

35、Limiter, Cat. No. _” or equivalent.13.4 Required markings shall be visible without opening a door or cover on the control box.13.5 Fault Limiters with interrupting functions that can be disabled shall be provided with markings thatclearly indicate if the function is enabled or disabled. See 11.1 11.

36、4.13.6 Field replaceable interrupters and fuse element shall have unique part numbers. The assembly shallbe marked with the interrupter and fuse element part numbers for proper field replacement.INSTRUCTIONS14 General14.1 Fault Limiters shall be provided with instructions for proper installation, op

37、eration, and maintenance.These instructions shall identify proper connection of all control boxes or other accessories that have beeninvestigated for use with each Fault Limiter, and shall provide details regarding the proper installation ofthese accessories. These instructions may be in the form of

38、 electrical schematics or drawings. Instructionsfor proper connection of remote indicators shall be included. Instructions shall also include the minimumphase to phase distance installation distance between Fault Limiters on different phases.PERFORMANCE15 General15.1 Fault Limiters shall be tested t

39、o demonstrate compliance with the performance requirements overthe range of possible settings, including minimum and maximum settings.15.2 For each design of Fault Limiter, the number of representative samples shall be as shown in UL248-1, Table 1.JUNE 29, 2018UL 38018UL COPYRIGHTED MATERIAL NOT AUT

During this test, the device sh

41、all carry 100 percent of rated current shall:a) Not ignite materials or components;b) Not cause the temperature limits of surfaces, materials, or components, as described inTable 16.1, to be exceeded;c) Not cause creeping, distortion, sagging, charring or similar damage to any part of theproduct, if

48、ODUCTION ORDISTRIBUTION WITHOUT PERMISSION FROM ULa) The major axis of the Fault Limiter shall be horizontal , unless otherwise specified by themanufacturer. Each terminal of the Fault Limiter shall be connected to a copper bus bar whosewidth and overall thickness is the same as the bus of the Fault

49、 Limiter.
