16、e goal of this outline of investigation is to establish a set of multi-sustainability performance criteriaaddressing the life cycle impacts of the product that may be used to evaluate the sustainabilityperformance of portable electronic products.1.2 These requirements provide a life cycle and human

17、health-based approach to setting the criteria tobe achieved. These requirements reflect the major areas of impact and provide a criteria structure that willallow manufacturers to demonstrate that any product meeting these requirements has made significantgains toward becoming sustainable.2 Scope2.1

18、This outline of investigation establishes multiple attribute sustainability criteria for portable electronicproducts, covering the portable electronic product, accessories shipped in the box with the portableelectronic product, and packaging.2.2 These requirements apply to products that are or will

19、be available for purchase at the time ofevaluation.2.3 The criteria in this outline of investigation were developed based on the life cycle stages of portableelectronic products and corporate sustainability performance factors. Sustainability factors considered inthis outline of investigation are:a)

22、d References and Regional Conformity4.1 Any undated reference to a code or standard appearing in this outline of investigation shall beinterpreted as referring to the latest edition of that code or standard. The exception shall be in the casewhere the criterion explicitly states a certain version or

23、 date to be used. In the case of EU Directives,which contain an adoption date in their title, when the EU repeals a directive and replaces it with a newdirective, or otherwise edits and updates a directive, the new directive will apply as the referenceddirective upon its enforcement date, unless oth

24、erwise explicitly stated in the normative reference.4.2 With regard to being region or country specific, there are the two following options for criteria:If the criterion does not specify, the criterion shall be certified to the same specifications in allcountries or regions for which the product is

25、 certified to this outline. The approach used toconform to the criterion may vary by country or region; orThe criterion may specify, “The number of points earned for this criterion may be different ineach country or region for which the product is certified to this outline.”Note: Region means countr

26、ies and territories whose independence may not be recognized by all countries(e.g., Taiwan).5 Glossary5.1 For the purpose of this outline of investigation, the following definitions apply.5.2 ACCESSORIES Components used external to the portable electronic product, such as cables andexternal power su

27、pplies, shipped in box with the portable electronic product, not including the portableelectronic product. Printed materials and packaging are excluded.5.3 AUTHORIZED REPAIR SERVICE PROVIDERS A service provider that has been providedpermission directly by the portable electronic product manufacturer

28、 to provide repair services.5.4 BIOBASED A material that is composed of biological materials, including renewable agricultural(plant, animal, and marine) and/or forestry materials.5.5 BIOBASED CONTENT The amount of biobased carbon in the material or product as a percent ofthe weight (mass) of the to

34、eexcess plant growth, usually resulting in the depletion of dissolved oxygen.5.11 FIBER BASED Materials primarily derived from natural fiber, including but not limited to wood,hemp, kenaf, palm, bamboo, starch, straw, cellulose and bagasse.5.12 FINAL ASSEMBLY The assembly process for a product after

35、 which it is sold directly to a customer,retail store or other distribution channel, without further assembly or manufacture, and does not includenon-physical (e.g. software/firmware installation on the product) and/or packaging processes or services.5.13 GLOBAL WARMING The sustained increase of the

36、 average temperature of the earthsatmosphere, resulting in climatic change, due to the increased emission of greenhouse gases.5.14 GRI STANDARDS A sustainability reporting framework that can be used to measure and reporton the economic, environmental, and social performance of an organization.5.15 H

44、ncludesany individual assembled parts of the packaging such as, but not limited to, any interior or exteriorblocking, bracing, cushioning, weatherproofing, exterior strapping, coatings, closures, inks, labels, bags,and films. The packaging does not include additional protective packaging used when t

45、ransporting to acustomer or reseller nor does it include printed information such as warranties and user guides.5.24 POINT OF SALE (POS) PACKAGING The packaging that contains the portable electronic productand accessories as packaged for sale to the user.5.25 PORTABLE ELECTRONIC PRODUCT A lightweigh

46、t electrically-powered device intended to beused and/or transported without a fixed location. This definition includes only the device itself and notpackaging or accessories. Typical products include, but are not limited to, consumer electronics such asebooks, keyboards, wearables, cameras, and port

47、able speakers. 48、MER RECYCLED MATERIAL Material that was used by an end-user which is nolonger being used for its intended purpose.5.27 PRE-CONSUMER RECYCLED MATERIAL Material diverted from the waste stream during amanufacturing process having never reached the end user. Excluded is the reutilization of materialsgen

49、erated in a manufacturing process and capable of being reused as a substitute for raw material withoutbeing modified in any way.5.28 PRIMARY ENERGY DEMAND The demand for energy found in nature that has not beensubjected to any conversion or transformation process. It is energy contained in raw fuels as well as otherforms of energy received as input to a system.5.29 PRIMARY RECYCLERS The entity(ies) that is contracted by the manufacturer or its agent toprovide recycling services. A manufacturer may have multiple
