3、an Grounding and GFCI RequirementsDECISION:123.1 In addition to the applicable requirements in Part 1 of this Standard, a fan intended for use in awindow shall comply with the requirements for Outdoor Use Equipment in Sections 134 - 138, and therequirements for fans Use in Windows in Sections 124 an

4、d 125. These requirements also address boxfans intended for use in windows. Also see 5.1.Exception No. 1: A fan intended for use in a window or a box fan intended for use in windows, with noparts requiring electrical continuity in accordance with 28.1.2, and having no dead metal parts likely tobecom

5、e energized, are not required to be provided with an equipment grounding conductor.Exception No. 2: A fan intended for use in a window or a box fan intended for use in windows is notrequired to be provided with a ground-fault circuit interrupter (GFCI).Exception No. 3: A fan intended for use in a wi

6、ndow or a box fan intended for use in windows shall notbe provided with the Outdoor Use Marking of 137.4.RATIONALE FOR DECISION:When the requirements for GFCI protection of outdoor use fans were proposed to UL 507, the rationaleincluded two key concepts: Older homes may not possess outdoor receptacl

7、es that are GFCI protected, and Outdoor products may be placed in puddles of water or located in close proximity to poolswhere GFCI protection is important regardless of the accessibility of dead metal parts.In parallel to the addition of paragraph 135.1.2, paragraph 123.1 was added to the requireme

8、nts forwindow fans. As paragraph 135.1.2 did not exist at the time and since window fans are not likely to beplaced in puddles of water or located in close proximity to pools, paragraph 123.1 did not intend to requireGFCI protection or to require an equipment grounding conductor for products of this

9、 type.
