21、ed as an addendum to TIA/EIA-604, Fiber Optic Connector Intermateability Standards. The provisions of TIA/EIA-604 apply to this document. 1.2 Objective Intermateability standards define the minimum physical attributes of mating connector components. Fully dimensioned components are not within the sc

22、ope or intent of FOCIS 5. The requirements of FOCIS 5 have been selected with the objectives of ensuring that any compatible combination of plugs and adapters, or plugs and device receptacles, conforming to the requirements of FOCIS 5 will mechanically intermate, and that intermated connector assemb

23、lies will meet their common level of performance. The common level of performance of an intermated connector assembly is the least demanding set of performance requirements in the separate performance specifications of each of the products in the assembly; see TIA/EIA 604. 1.3 Limitations Realizatio

24、n of the objectives for FOCIS 5 may be limited by the following considerations: 1.3.1 Configuration Options There are configuration options in FOCIS 5 that impose limitations on the combinations of plugs, adapters and device receptacles that should be combined in a connector assembly: Both plugs sho

25、uld have the same number of fiber rows, option m; Both plugs should have the same number of fibers per row, option n; Both plugs should have the same alignment pin/hole diameter range option, option t; Both plugs should have the same angles of contact, option a; For k=1 adapters, mated plugs must be

26、 of the same ferrule orientation, option o; For k=2 adapters, when mating plugs with a=8, one mated plug must have ferrule orientation o=1 and the other plug must have ferrule orientation o=2. Device receptacles with: option a=0 are only compatible with plugs of option a=0 option a=8 are only compat

27、ible with plugs of option a=8 and ferrule orientation option o=1 Each plug in an assembly should have different plug interface, option c. Device receptacles are defined only with option c = 1; Only plugs with option c = 2 should be inserted into a device receptacle. TIA-604-5-E 2 1.3.2 Common Perfor

28、mance The locations of the optical cores, as shown in Figure 3.2.3, are defined, without tolerances, by their true positions. To apply common performance the distribution of the optical cores, as shown in Figure 3.2.3, should be centered on their respective true positions. This standard does not con

29、trol the intrinsic loss that may occur between fibers in a connector assembly. Intrinsic loss between fibers must be added to the basic connector loss. 1.4 Drawing practices To be in compliance with ANSI and ISO Engineering Drawing Practices, the following shall apply: 1. Where a tolerance of form i

30、s not specified, the limits of the dimensions for a feature control the form as well as the size. The combined effects of size and form variations may not exceed the envelope of perfect form at the MMC (maximum material condition). 2. Where interrelated features of size (features shown with a common

31、 axis or center plane) have no geometric tolerance of location or runout specified, the limits of the dimensions for a feature control the location tolerance as well as the size. When the interrelated features are at the MMC, they shall be perfectly located to each other as indicated by the drawing.

Where perpendicular features (features shown at right angles) have no geometric tolerance or orientation or runout specified, the limits of the dimensions for a feature control the orientation tolerance as well as the size. When perpendicular features are at the MMC, they shall be perfectly orie

33、nted to each other as indicated by the drawing. 4. As the size of a feature departs from the MMC, variations in form, location and orientation are permissible. TIA-604-5-E 3 2 Adapter standard 2.1 Adapter designation The complete designation for a FOCIS 5 connector adapter is: FOCIS 5 A - k - m wher

34、e: A designates that it is an adapter k defines the keying configuration m defines the mounting configuration 2.2 Adapter requirements FOCIS 5 adapters shall meet the requirements of this section. 2.2.1 Adapter interface dimensions The dimensional requirements for FOCIS 5 adapters are defined in Fig

35、ure 2.2.1. 2.2.2 Adapter keying options Two options have been defined for the adapter keying configuration: k = 1 shown in Figure 2.2.1 k = 2 shown in Figure 2.2.2 2.2.3 Adapter mounting options The only mounting option specified is m = 0. The mounting features for this option are undefined. TIA-604

37、esignates whether the plug interface contains alignment pins or holes t designates the alignment pin/hole diameter range option o designates ferrule orientation relative to key 3.2 Plug requirements FOCIS 5 plugs shall meet the requirements of this section. 3.2.1 Plug interface dimensions The dimens

38、ional requirements for FOCIS 5 plugs are defined in Figure 3.2.1 and Figure 3.2.1a. Ferrule material shall have a modulus of elasticity of less than 25 GPa. 3.2.2 Ferrule extension and contact force The travel of the ferrule relative to the plug body and the spring force on the ferrule are defined i

TIA-604-5-E 5 3.2.4 Number of fibers per row options The five values defined for the number of fibers in

41、a single row are specified in Table 2. The number of fibers in the plug is equal to the number of fiber rows (m) times the number of fibers per row (n), or m n. The k = 1 option is shown in Figure 3.2.1. 3.2.6 Contact angle options The contact angle is the angle between the plane of contact of mating fibers and a plane perpendicular to the optical axis of the plug. Two options have been defined for the contact angle: a = 0, designa

44、tes an angle of 0 a = 8, designates an angle of 8 The dimensional requirements are defined in Figure 3.2.4. 3.2.7 Plug interface options Two options have been defined for the plug interface: c = 1, designates a plug interface that contains alignment pins (shown in Figure 3.2.1). c = 2, designates a

47、e ferrule orientation relative to the MPO key: o = 0, designates a ferrule that can be oriented in either direction. Typically this is a ferrule with a contact angle of 0 (i.e. a = 0). o = 1, designates a “down-angled” angled ferrule. It has a contact angle of 8 (i.e. a = 8) oriented such that the M

48、PO key is on the same side as the “flat” portion of the ferrule endface, i.e. the feature assigned dimension T in Figure 3.2.4. o = 2, designates an “up-angled” angled ferrule. It has a contact angle of 8 (i.e. a = 8) oriented such that the MPO key is on the opposite side of the “flat” portion of th

TIA-604-5-E 7 4 Device receptacle standard 4.1 Device receptacle designation A device receptacle provides an optical connection to a device such as an optical source or detector. It is, in effect, half of an adapter. A receptacle for FOCIS 5 plugs shall be designed to intermate with an option c = 2 plug.
