INTRODUCTION This procedure describes a method to establish the susceptibility of components such as cabled fibers, interconnecting devices, splices, or couplers to ambient light. The test conditions simulate expected conditions to which the fib

27、er optic cable or device may be subjected during actual use. NOTE : This test is extremely unlikely to produce failing results for any fiber optic cable . that utilizes a black or other opaque-colored jacket, but cable failures may occur when transparent or translucent jackets are employed. _ - ._ _

29、cers, Sensors, Connecting and Terminating Devices, and Other Fiber Optic Components !Optical Fiber End Preparation and Examination“ !Connectors for optical fibres and cables Unless otherwise specified, the following apparatus anLr equipment are required to perform this test: 3.1 Light Source. Use a

30、noncoherent light source having a spectral range that covers the wavelengths of systems operation. The source stability and spectral width shall be specified in the Detail Specification. This source shall produce a maximum intensity of from 20 to 100 milliwatts/cm2 at the surface of the test sample,

31、 or an intensity as specified in the Detail Specification. Note: The sun may be used as a source. 3.2 Light Chamber. The light chamber shall be such that at least 50% of the surface of the cable or device under test is subjected to the specified light intensity. Seal the chamber entrance and exit po

32、rts against external light in order to allow good definition of light levels at the component. In process of preparation. 33、The test detector shall be of sufficient active area and placed sufficiently near the end of It the fiber to detect all light emitted from the fiber end. shall have a 40 dB dynamic range and a sensitivity and noise figure capable of detecting a -60 dBm (1 nanowatt) signal and shall have the linearit

34、y, stability, -and spectral response as specified in the Detail Specification. The meter portion of the detector shall indicate in units of power or be capable of conversion to power units, e.g., microwatts, nanowatts. 3.4 Light-Tight Encosure/Lock-In Amplifier. Use a system to diminish the effects

35、of ambient light on the detected signal. If a light-tight enclosure is not used, then use a lock-in amplifier to diminish the effects of ambient lighting. Take care to ensure that ambient lighting does not saturate the detector. 3.5 Irradiance Meter. The irradiance meter shall have enough range to m

36、easure 100 milliwatt/cm2, or the intensity that the Detail Specification requires to be at the surface of the component. The reproducibility shall be within however, see Note 3 relative to Figure 2.) 5. PROCEDURE NOTE: When testing cable alone, only steps 5.1 through 5.10 apply. When testing a devic

37、e that requires cabling to be attached to it during the test, steps 5.1 through 5.10 are first performed on the cable to be used (or on another cable sample of the same length and type, if several devices are being tested) ; then steps 5.5 and 5.7 through 5.10 are repeated as described in steps 5.11

38、 and 5.12. 5.1 Step 1. To calibrate the reference detector, place an irradiance meter (detector head) in the center of the area where the specimen to be tested will be placed. Aim the meter at the light source. Unless otherwise specified in the Detail Specification, the irradiance meter shall read o

Turn on the light source and adjust the light intensity to obtain the irradiance meter reading specified in the Detail Specification. 5.3

40、Step 3, Measure and record the irradiance level detected at the reference detector. This is now the reference level equal to the required light intensity at the surface of the cable. The irradiance meter may be removed from the test setup at this time. 5.4 Step 4. Position the sample such that a min

41、imum 2 m (6.6 ft) length of cable (or a length as specified in the Detail Specification) is exposed to the light source. 44、n cable specimens. Tight bends could artificially cause a cable having, for example, a transparent jacket, to be overly susceptible to light entry, just as tight bends in fibers are used deliberately to allow light entry and exit for measurement purposes in “Local Injection and Detectionf1 (LID) sys

45、tems. A better arrangement in such cases would be to use a box that is large enough to permit the specimen to lie straight, or nearly straight, in the box.
