7、rgy codes and ENERGY STARqualification require limiting air infiltration (leakage) through recessed luminaires (fixtures). The goal is to restrict passage of conditioned air and moisture through a recessed luminaire into unconditioned space in order to reduce energy loss and moisture accumulation. B

8、ecause such luminaires are usually installed in the outer envelope of a building in areas that are provided with thermal insulation, they are also typically rated for insulation contact, but the two requirements are not directly related. Many codes allow various routes for compliance with this air i

This paper will focus on the luminaire construction that passes a test demonstra

This information is useful for those testing, producing, specifying, installing, and inspecting these luminaires. ASTM E283 Testing ASTM E2831contains the procedu

This standard was originally developed to test windows and doors but has been adopted for other penetrations in the building envelope, such as luminaires. The test involves installation of the luminaire in accordance with the manufacturers installatio

This panel is installed into an apparatus that establishes a differential pressure of 75 Pascals (1.57 psf) across the luminaire. The airflow needed to maintain the static pressure differential is measured and represents the air infiltr

Installation Instructions Since compliance with the air infiltration tests is dependent upon proper installation,

14、 all special installation procedures must be observed along with the normal product installation steps. Accordingly, it is critical that the installation instructions provided with the luminaire are read, understood, and followed. To prevent excess air flow, the interface between the luminaire and b

Some manufacturers specify a caulking material or provide gaskets or similar sealing materials that must be applied as instructed to prevent air leakage. The instructions will describe proper seal application or might identify specific finishin

In addition to the product installation instructions, all applicable codes and regulations must also be observed. Labeling The lum
