    20、hecarriagewayorarelikelytoencroachintothepathofoncoming vehicles.EN13172dealswiththeimpactperformanceofasafetybarrier.However,difficultiesarise inprovidingadequatesafeterminationstothebarrier.Consequently,terminals,whicharedefinedas thebeginningand/orendtreatmentofasafetybarrier,arerequiredtohavespe

    21、cifiedimpact performances.Aterminalprovidesasmoothtransitionfromnocontainmenttothecontainmentofthe barrier,withoutintroducingadditionalhazardforheadonimpacts. Problemsmayalsoariseintheconnectionbetweentwodifferentsafetybarriershavingconsistent differenceinstiffness.Transitionsmaybeneeded,thatarerequ

    22、iredtohavespecifiedimpact performances. TheobjectiveofthisprestandardistoleadtotheharmonizationofcurrentNationalRegulations,to categorizethemintoperformanceclassesandhelpdevelopnewsystemsandimproveexisting systems. ThisPartoftheprestandarddefinestheclassesofperformancerequiredofterminalsandtransitio

    23、ns fortherestraint. Theimpactseverityofvehiclesincollisionwithterminalsandtransitionsisratedbytheindices accelerationseverityindex(ASI),theoreticalheadimpactvelocity(THIV)andpostimpacthead deceleration(PHD). Attentionisdrawntothefactthattheacceptanceofaterminalortransitionwillrequirethesuccessful co

    24、mpletionofaseriesoftests(seeTables1to8). ToensureproperuseofthisPartofthisseries,itisessentialtoconsideralltheotherrelevant documentswithintheseries.Additionally,thequalityofmanufacture,durability,satisfactoryroadside installationandeaseofmaintenanceareimportantsafetycriteria. 1 Scope ThisEuropeanPr
