It is identical with ISO6240

、“Performance standards in building Contents and presentation” prepared by ISO/TC59, Building construction, and published in1980 by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). Terminology and conventions. The text of the International Standard has been approved as suitable for publicati

、on, without deviation, as a BritishStandard. Some terminology and certain conventions are not identical with those used in British Standards; attention is especially drawn to the following. Wherever the words “International Standard” appear, in clauses0, 1 and3, referring to this standard, they shou

、ld be read as “British Standard”. Where the words “International Standard” appear in4.4, 4.5.2, 4.6.1 and4.6.2 they should be read as “International Standard and/or British Standard”. Where the words “International Standard or Guides” appear in4.6 they should be read as “International Standard or Gu

、ide and/or British Standard or Guide”. NOTETextual error. In line5 of clause 0, “clause 2” should read “clause1”. A British Standard does not purport to include all the necessary provisions of a contract. Users of British Standards are responsible for their correct application. Compliance with a Bri

、tish Standard does not of itself confer immunity from legal obligations. Summary of pages This document comprises a front cover, an inside front cover, pagesi andii, pages1 and 2 and a back cover. This standard has been updated (see copyright date) and may have had amendments incorporated. This will

、 be indicated in the amendment table on the inside front cover.BS6019:1980 BSI 10-1999 1 0 Introduction This International Standard has a particularly wide range of applications within the standards field, as well as a number of further potential applications to building documents incorporating perf

、ormance statements; these are described formally in clause2 below. Its application extends to standards that are wide-ranging in scope covering, for example, groups of products or assemblies of components as well as to the more customary standards for specific products. Different kinds of informatio

、n on performance will be required in these different “levels” of standards, and this International Standard is intended to provide a broad, common basis of headings and sequence for arranging this information. The scope of the information to be given will also vary depending on whether the standard

、being drafted a) covers all relevant aspects of the performance of a component or assembly, i.e.forms a comprehensive performance specification or statement; b) is restricted to one or a limited number of performance attributes, or c) includes both performance requirements and other types of require

、ment, for example for aspects of material or construction. The detailed guidance in this International Standard relates to comprehensive standards written in performance terms only paragraph a) above. A measure of selection or interpretation will be required to determine which aspects of the guidanc

、e apply to standards of the other types paragraphs b) and c) above. 1 Scope and field of application This International Standard specifies the basic contents to be included in performance standards for building components and assemblies, and indicates a standard order for their inclusion. It is inte

、nded primarily for use by standards committees preparing performance standards for building components and assemblies. It should also be useful for the preparation of other types of document, such as: a) statements of required performance in building regulations and other statutory documents; b) sta

、tements of required or achieved performance in guidance documents for building designers; c) statements of required or achieved performance in contract documents for purchasing components; d) statements of required or achieved performance in briefs and contract documents for the construction of buil

、dings as a whole; e) statements of achieved performance in descriptive documents about manufacturers products. NOTEA document covering preparation of performance standards in building has been submitted for testing to the sub-committees and ISO technical committees concerned. 2 Reference When Intern

、ational Standards are being produced, reference should be made to the Directives for the Technical work of ISO, Part3: Presentation of International Standards, whose recommendations for general layout should also be followed. 3 Definitions For the purposes of this International Standard, the followi

、ng definitions apply: 3.1 component a product manufactured as a distinct unit to serve a specific function (or functions) 3.2 assembly an aggregate of components used together 3.3 performance (the) behaviour (of a product) related to use 4 Clauses for inclusion in performance standards 4.1 “Scope” G

、ive the name of, or otherwise identify, the component or assembly which is the subject of the standard. 4.2 “Field of application” Define the intended uses of the standard itself, and of the component or assembly which is its subject. Sufficient indication of any related uses to which they are only

、partially applicable should also be given in this clause. 4.3 “References” Refer to the other relevant standards and documents regarding applications. 4.4 “Definitions” Define all specialized terms used in the standard, following relevant International Standards.BS6019:1980 2 BSI 10-1999 4.5 “Purpos

、e and context of use” 4.5.1 Describe the role that the component or assembly is intended to play in satisfying applicable functional requirements, either solely or in combination with other parts of construction. 4.5.2 Indicate the agents relevant to the performance of the component or assembly (for

、example the agents or actions to which it may besubjected, or which it may generate under the intended service conditions or range of conditions). The factors shall be expressed quantitatively, and in accordance with International Standards on means of expression, where applicable. 4.6 “Performance

、requirements” Performance requirements must be listed for final use in the building and, if necessary, for supply, transport, intermediate storage, handling and installation, in accordance with any order recommended in applicable International Standard or Guides. A distinction may need to be drawn b

、etween those requirements which always apply and those which apply only in certain circumstances, according to the purpose and context(s) of use stated under4.5. Each performance requirement must be defined(4.6.1) and then each requirement must have specified methods of assessment or verification(4.

、6.2) and performance values(4.6.3), together with a commentary(4.6.4), if appropriate. 4.6.1 “Definition of performance” Define each performance requirement in terms of a function which is to be fulfilled, together with the physical or chemical property or properties on which assessment or verificat

、ion will be based. Use terms and expressions capable of quantification and in accordance with any applicable International Standards. NOTEIt may be necessary to define properties that a component or assembly shall NOT possess, for example unacceptable side-effects. 4.6.2 “Methods of assessment or ve

、rification” For each performance requirement, describe fully or cross-refer to: a) the means (measurement, calculation, test or method of examination) by which the achieved performance of the component or assembly will be assessed or verified; and b) the means of predicting the performance over time

、 of the component or assembly. Cross-references should be to International Standards where possible. 4.6.3 “Performance values” For each performance requirement, state upper and lower limits to the range of acceptable performance values or grades, against which the achieved performance of any partic

、ular component or assembly will be required to be stated. Indicate the relationship of the values or grades to the purpose and context(s) of use stated under4.5, giving appropriate increments for the selection of specific values. 4.6.4 “Commentary” Give any observations, examples or data that may as

、sist understanding. 4.7 “Description of achieved performance” State any requirements for the description (for example by manufacturers) of the achieved performance of products complying with the standard. 4.8 “Applicability to certification” Give details of the standards applicability to certificati
