    7、 under the direction of the Electrical lllumination Standards Committee. It is the sixth Part of a complete revision of BS3224. This Part of BS3224 specifies requirements for obstacle lighting units, which were not previously included in BS3224. However, all Sections of BS3224 are superseded and wit

    8、hdrawn with the publication of the other Parts of this revision, which are: Part 1: Specification for lighting units for use in precision approach path indicator systems; Part 4: Specification for elevated lighting units; Part 5: Specification for inset lighting units. Requirements for light distrib

    9、utions are not included in this edition. Attention is drawn particularly to the recommendations and requirements for installation and operation, and for light distribution, that are given in Annex 14 to the Convention on International Civil Aviation and the Aerodrome Design Manual, Part 4: Visual Gr

    10、ound Aids, both published by the International Civil Aviation Organization, and to Civil Air Publication168, Licensing of Aerodromes, published by the Civil Aviation Authority. This will be indicated in the amendment table on theinside front cover.BS3224-6:1988 BSI 04-1999 1 1 Scope This Part of BS3224 specifies the essential mechanical and electrical features, excluding lamps, and describes photomet

    13、ric tests for obstacle lighting units that are either elevated or surface mounted. Light distributions are not specified within this Part of BS3224 (see the publications referred to in the foreword). NOTEThe titles of the publications referred to in this standard are listed on the inside back cover.

    14、 2 Definition For the purposes of this Part of BS3224 the following definition applies. type test a test for the purpose of checking compliance of the design of a given product with the requirements of the relevant specification. Type test samples are selected in agreement with the manufacturer or r

    15、esponsible vendor 3 General test requirements 3.1 The tests described in this standard shall be type tests (see clause2). 3.2 Except where otherwise specified, units shall be tested in an ambient temperature of between10 C and30 C. The units shall be tested as installed in normal use. The lamp type

    16、recommended by the manufacturer shall be used for the test. Tests shall be made on a single sample unit or, where a range of similar units is involved, on a single unit of each rated wattage in the range or on a representative selection from the range as agreed with the manufacturer. This selection

    17、shall include the unit, together with any attachments, which represents the most unfavourable combination from a testing point of view. Each sample unit shall pass all the relevant tests. Tests shall be carried out in the order given in Table 1. Table 1 Sequence of tests 4 Conditions of use 4.1 The

    18、unit shall be designed for use on supply voltages not greater than250V r.m.s. to earth. 4.2 The unit shall not cause radio interference in excess of the requirements of BS800. 4.3 The construction of the unit shall provide for the attachment of an electrostatic screen for the prevention of the modul

    19、ation of any carrier waves passing through the lamp. NOTE 1The unit should be suitable for use when mounted on flat surfaces, perpendicular walls, poles or fixed or portable structures in a wide range of ambient temperatures and humidities. NOTE 2Due allowance should be made for the effect of solar

    20、heating, dust and sand, heavy rain, ice, snow, corrosive atmospheres and wind speeds of up to160km/h, in an ambient temperature range of between20 C and+50 C. NOTE 3The unit should be designed so that the operating conditions may be determined visually by an observer at ground level or by electrical

    21、 means. 5 Optical components and lampholders Lampholders shall be of such design that the lamp cannot be inserted incorrectly in the unit and that once inserted the lamp is retained firmly in position. The making of connections between the lamp and holder shall not necessitate the use of a tool exce

    22、pt when necessary for the prevention of finger marking of the lamp envelope. NOTEAll optical components should be easily replaceable and should be designed or marked so as to inhibit incorrect assembly. 6 Fastening of covers 6.1 Covers that are required to be opened or removed for maintenance purpos

    23、es, e.g.for lamp changing, shall be secured by fastenings which may be operated without the use of tools made specifically for the purpose. These fastenings shall be captive. 6.2 Where a voltage in excess of250V is required for normal operation of the light source, either provision shall be made for

    24、 an electrical interlock for the isolation of the supply voltage, or a suitable warning notice shall be fixed to the cover. 7 Mounting 7.1 Requirements 7.1.1 Where the mass of parts exceeds2kg or their volume exceeds0.1m 3provision shall be made for the attachment of a lifting device or safety rope.

    26、999 7.1.2 When tested in accordance with Table 1, clause3 and7.2, after each application of load the unit shall show no sign of failure, no movement at the point of attachment and, for the duration of the test, no beam deflection exceeding 2 . 7.2 Wind loading test Fix the unit by the method recomme

    27、nded by the manufacturer to a rigid mounting with its maximum projected area lying in a horizontal plane. Apply a distributed load of2.4kN/m 2for a period of10min by means of sandbags. Repeat the test with the force applied at90,180 and270 about the axis of its mounting. Examine the unit after each

    28、load application for failure or movement at the point of attachment and at the conclusion of the test for any beam deflection. 8 Electrical connections 8.1 Provision shall be made to accommodate the entry of insulated and sheathed three-core supply cables having a maximum conductor size of2.5mm 2 .

    29、8.2 Where necessary, a suitable earthing terminal for the unit shall be provided and, where the lamp mounting is separate from the main body of the unit, earthing connections shall be provided between all of the relevant metal parts of the unit. 8.3 Cable entries shall be capable of being connected

    30、to conduit or fittings complying with BS6099. 9 Resistance to heat 9.1 Requirements When the unit is tested in accordance with Table 1, clause3 and9.2, the external parts of insulating material and parts of insulating material retaining live parts in position shall exhibit no permanent deformation a

    31、nd there shall be no deterioration or permanent deformation of other parts. The lamp temperatures during the test shall not exceed the designed temperature limits for the lamp type. 9.2 Test Operate the unit using the recommended lamps at rated wattage in an ambient temperature of502C for a period o

    32、f24h. Measure the lamp temperature after a period of atleast2h from the start of the test. 10 Resistance to ingress of dust and moisture The unit shall provide a minimum index of protection of IP54 when tested in accordance with Table 1, clause3 and BS4533-101. After testing, the unit shall show no

    33、accumulation of dust or water on the internal optical surfaces or electrical connections and the outer cover shall show no signs of cracking or other failure. 11 Insulation 11.1 Requirement When tested in accordance with Table 1, clause3 and11.2 the insulation resistance of the unit shall be not les

    34、s than 2M7 at a voltage of500V d.c., and in addition units employing hot or cold cathode discharge lamps shall comply with Section 10 of BS4533-101:1987. NOTECompliance will require the use of non-hygroscopic insulation materials capable of withstanding the operating conditions given in clause4. 11.

    35、2 Tests 11.2.1 For units employing filament lamps follow the procedure described in11.2.2. For units employing hot or cold cathode discharge lamps follow the procedure described in11.2.3. 11.2.2 Immediately after the tests specified in clause10, with the lamps removed, measure the insulation resista

    36、nce between the opposite poles of the lamp circuit and between each pole and the body of the unit at a voltage of500V d.c. Where a lamp filament failure changeover device is employed, make the measurement between all poles connected together and earth. 11.2.3 For hot cathode discharge lamp units, me

    37、asure the insulation resistance in accordance with11.2.2 with any interlocked switching closed. Carry out the tests on the lamp circuits specified in Section 10 of BS4533-101:1987. For cold cathode discharge units, measure the insulation resistance with any interlocked switching closed. Carry out th

    38、e tests on the lamp circuit specified in Section 10 of BS4533-101:1987. 12 Photometric performance 12.1 Requirements 12.1.1 When tested in accordance with Table 1, clause3 and12.2 the unit shall comply with12.1.2 and12.1.3. NOTEAttention is drawn to the publications referred to in the foreword.BS322

    39、4-6:1988 BSI 04-1999 3 12.1.2 The chromaticity of the light emitted shall be of signal class A complying with BS1376. NOTEAny colour media should show no deformation or deterioration when the unit is operated for a minimum of2000h at maximum light output. 12.1.3 Low intensity units shall be classifi

    40、ed as follows. Group A: not less than10cd red peak intensity. Group B: not less than200cd red peak intensity. 12.2 Tests 12.2.1 General. Operate the unit as for service using the recommended lamps and correlate the results to the manufacturers published data for the lamp type. Make all measurements

    41、in accordance with the recognized methods for photometric assessment. NOTE 1BS5225-1 gives guidance on methods. Where filters are used to colour light by subtractive means, intensities of the coloured signal may be obtained by multiplying the white light intensities by the transmission factor of the

    42、 filter. NOTE 2ClE Document15: Colorimetry(1971) gives information on the spectral sensitivity of the ClE photopic observer. 12.2.2 Stability of colour media. Operate the unit for a period of not less than2000h at the maximum light output and examine the colour media for deformation or deterioration

    43、. 13 External finish The visible external surface of the body or cover of the unit shall have a finish applied in accordance with the manufacturers instructions. NOTE 1All parts of the unit should have a surface finish suitable to resist corrosion and the effects of the conditions listed in clause4.

    44、 NOTE 2The external surface of the body of the fitting should be finished in light grey, colour No.631 complying with BS381C. 14 Marking The unit shall be durable and legibly marked with the following: a) the manufacturers name or identification mark; b) the type or reference number; c) the number a

    45、nd date of this British Standard, i.e.BS3224-6:1988 1) . 1) Marking BS3224-6:1988 on or in relation to a product represents a manufacturers declaration of conformity, i.e.a claim by or on behalf of the manufacturer that the product meets the requirements of the standard. The accuracy of the claim is

    46、 therefore solely the responsibility of the person making the claim.
