、Designation: E3020 15Standard Practice forIgnition Sources1This standard is issued under the fixed designation E3020; the number immediately following the designation indicates the year oforiginal adoption or, in the case of revision, the year of last revision. A number in parentheses indicates the

、year of last reapproval. Asuperscript epsilon () indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.1. Scope1.1 This practice describes a series of ignition sources thathave been used and that are potentially applicable to assessingfire-test-response characteristics resulting from t

、he ignition ofmaterials, products, or assemblies.1.2 This practice does not identify which of the ignitionsources described is applicable to any specific use since that isa function of the associated fire hazard (see also 5.2).1.3 This practice is not necessarily comprehensive and it ispossible that

、 other applicable ignition sources exist (see also5.3).1.4 This practice describes both flaming and non-flamingignition sources, since the outcome of a non-flaming ignitioncan be the eventual flaming ignition of these materials orproducts (see also 4.2).1.5 This practice does not provide pass/fail c

These notes and footnotes (exclud-ing those in tables and figures) shall not be consideredrequirements of the standard.1.10 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded asstandard in referee decisions. 43、nsources used in test methods, specifications, or regulations toassess fire-test-response characteristics of materials, products,or assemblies.4.2 These ignition sources include those that assess theresponse to non-flaming ignition sources, including smolderingcigarettes, glow wires, hot wires, and

、radiant heat sources.4.3 These ignition sources include those that assess theresponse to flaming ignition sources, including both premixedflames and diffusion flames.4.4 This practice does not offer pass/fail criteria.4.5 The information included in this practice is representa-tive of the ignition s

、ources in the various standards at the timethis practice was written. Users of this practice are encouragedto consult the latest edition of any standard at the time ofproposed use of an ignition source.5. Significance and Use5.1 A variety of standard test methods, specifications, andregulations have

、 been issued by a number of different standardsdeveloping organizations and regulatory authorities that con-tain ignition sources used to assess fire-test-response charac-teristics associated with flaming and non-flaming ignition. Thispractice describes such ignition sources and provides informa-tio

、n on the standard method in which they are described.5.2 The ignition source to be chosen for any specific useneeds to be relevant to the fire hazard associated with theintended application. Neither the scope of the standard con-taining the ignition source nor any other aspect of the standardhas any

、 bearing on the use of the ignition source for anotherapplication.5.3 This practice is not expected to be a fully comprehen-sive list of ignition sources. If additional ignition sources areidentified they can be added to the practice.7Available from Underwriters Laboratories (UL), 2600 N.W. Lake Rd.
