Terminology3.1 Definitions:3.1.1 aerobic digestion, nprocess in which micro-organisms break down organic materials(s) in the presence ofoxygen.3.1.2 anaerobic digestion, nprocess in which micro-organisms break down organic material(s

    7、) in the absence ofoxygen.3.1.3 hazardous material, nmaterial that, because of itsquantity, concentration, or characteristics, is capable of: (1)causing, or significantly contributing to, an increase in mortal-ity or to an increase in serious irreversible, or incapacitating,illness or injury, or (2)

    8、 posing a present or potential hazard tohuman health or to the environment when improperly treated,stored, transported, or disposed of, or otherwise managed.3.1.3.1 DiscussionThe U.S. Environmental ProtectionAgency (US EPA) has developed a list of materials that areconsidered hazardous material and

    9、has developed criteria andtest methods to determine if the material has hazardouscharacteristics. These listings and testing criteria can be foundin 40 CFR 261.3.1.4 landfill, ndisposal site for the deposit of materialsonto or into land under controlled or regulated conditions.3.1.5 non-process disc

    10、arded material, nmaterial gener-ated and disposed of at a manufacturing facility that isunrelated to a manufacturing process.3.1.5.1 DiscussionExamples include, non-process materi-als from office activities, construction or demolition projects,or ground maintenance.3.1.6 process discarded material,

    11、nmaterial generated anddisposed of at a manufacturing facility that is related to amanufacturing process.3.1.6.1 DiscussionDisposal of nonconforming processmaterials that cannot be reworked or raw material packagingare examples of process discarded material.3.1.7 regulated material, ndiscarded mater

    12、ial that is offi-cially classified by relevant local, national, or internationalagencies or jurisdictions having statutory authority to establishwaste classification.3.1.8 re-use, nmaterials that have not reached their usefulend of life and are transferred to an entity that can use thematerial or pr

    13、oduct again in its current state.3.1.8.1 DiscussionComputers or laboratory equipmentdonated to school and off-spec finished goods donated to atechnical school are examples of re-use.3.1.9 special material, nclass of materials having uniqueregulatory disposal requirements because of potential human o

Significance and Use4.1 This classification can be used to classify materialoutputs from manufacturing facilities and a

This classification does not include classification ofemissions to air or water.4.2 This classification can be used to classify discardedmaterials for marketing claims associated with discardedmaterials generation and development of consistent trackingmetrics for manufac

    19、turing facilities.5. Basis of Classification5.1 Materials shall be classified according to the steps in thissection. See Fig. 1 and Table 1 for further guidance onclassification.5.2 Step 1: Type of MaterialDiscarded materials shall beclassified into one of the following:5.2.1 Non-Process Discarded M

Classification6.1 All discarded materials shall be classified per Section 5using abbreviations detailed in Tabl

    23、e 1.6.1.1 For example, process discarded material sent from onemanufacturing facility to another for recycling would beclassified as PUFR Process discarded material (P), Unregu-lated (U), Sent off-site (F), for Recycling (R).6.2 Additional classification may be included and shall betracked separatel

    24、y.6.2.1 For example, discarded materials may be furtherclassified based on the presence of feedstock energy content forthe purpose of life-cycle inventories.7.
