The required designations shallbe applied by the method specified on the product drawing usingthe applicable procedure specified herein.3.1.2 Manufacturers designation

、. When required, manufac-turers code letters will be assigned by the procuring activityand shall be located as shown on the product drawing. In addi-tion, the date code shall be marked by the manufacturer, whenrequired, in accordance with the following system:“A” for January, “B” for February, etc.,

、 “77” for 1977, “78” for1978. etc. Example: “D78” indicates April 1978 manufacture.3.2 Hot-stamp marking.3.2.1 General information. When hot stamping is specified, the outer jacket or sleeving insulation shall be marked usinginked marking foils designed for the particular material beingmarked. The ma

、rking shall be impressed to a depth not exceedingone-fourth of the thickness of the material. Markings shall bewhite on black, dark brown, dark blue, dark red, dark green, anddark purple material. Markings on other colors shall be black.Markings on transparent insulation sleeving shall be black exce

、ptwhen the materials underneath are dark colors listed above, inwhich case the markings shall be white. Unless otherwise speci-fied, markings on white hook-up wires shall be black, Or of acontrast color to white if colored markings are desired tofacilitate production. The use of colored markings sha

Marking foils must be chosen forcompatibility with the materials being marked to effect goodadhesion.3.2.2.3 Type. Type shall consist of vertical

、capitals ofGothic or similar design. Flat-faced type shall be used formarking on flat surfaces such as on tape and polyvinyl sleeving, and curved-faced type for marking on curved surfaces such as onwires, cables, and sleeving where the type used shall be thelargest size which will produce impressed c

The marking machine shall be fitted withthe correct size type, guide blocks, and foil and then heatedto the proper temperature before marking is begun. The sectionof the insulation to be marked should be well supported andcentered under

、the type and the surface should be as parallelto the face of the type as possible; otherwise, some of the typemay cut through the insulation before all the characters areprinted. The optimum dwell time and pressure used for each typeand thickness of material shall be determined prior to markingthe p

、roduction part. (The operation varialbes must be care-fully controlled. A short dwell time of 1 second or less isnormally employed except for nylon insulation which requires adwell time of 1 to 2 seconds. Polyvinyl plastic can be markedat 400 25F. and polyethylene and synthetic rubber insula-tion at

、 375 25F. Nylon requires a temperature of approxi-mately 450F. Automatic machines may require higher temperaturethan hand-operated machines since shorter dwell times arenormally employed.)3.2.3.1 Hook-up wires. Markings on hook-up wires shallbe of two types as specified on figure 1. Either type may

、beemployed unless otherwise specified on the product drawing.Type I - Markings shall be applied recurrently along thelength of the wire with at least one markingappearing near each end.Type II - Markings shall be applied twice at each end ofthe wire as illustrated. Markings may in addi-tion appear a

、t intervals along the length ofthe wire.Markings need not be applied a specific distance from the endof the wire but shall be applied in such a location that thedesignation is readily visible near the end of the wire after3Provided by IHSNot for ResaleNo reproduction or networking permitted without

Wires shorter than three inches, such as jumperwires, need not be marked unless specifically designated on theproduct drawin

、g. If markings on individual wires in harnessesand cables are not required by the product drawing, and suchmarking would be desirable to facilitate production, manufactur-ing may hot-stamp suitable designations on the wires.3.2.3.2 Cables. - Identification designations on cablesshall be located on t

、he product drawing and shall consist of adouble marking of the designations as shown on figure 2. Coaxialcables and other manufacturer cables with tight-fitting jacketsshall be hot-stamped directly on the jacket (see 3.2.3.2.1). Wheninsulation sleeving is employed as an outer jacket over a bundleof

、wires, the markings shall be applied to the flat sleeving be-fore insertion of the wires.3.2.3.2.1 Identification sleeves. - Marking of cables withidentification sleeves (see figure 3) is a special method whichmay, when so specified, be used as an alternate to direct hot-stamping of the outer jacket

、 if the following conditions exist:(1) on small cables where experience has shown that the thin in-sulation is pierced in the stamping operation, (2) on manufactured, multiconductor cables with extruded insulation where, due to thetwist and insufficient number of conductors underneath, ridgesappear t

、o such an extent that a satisfactory marking cannot beobtained, and (3) on insulation where properties of the materialare such that a satisfactory direct marking cannot be obtained.Identification Sleeves shall not be used if a satisfactorymarking can be made by direct hot stamping of the outer jacke

、t.Identification sleeves, when used, shall be made from a suitablelength of polyvinyl sleeving complying with the requirementsof MIL-I-7444. The inside diameter of the sleeve shall be suchas to provide a close fit over the cable jacket. The requireddesignations shall be hot-stamped on the sleeve as

、indicatedin 3.2.3.2 prior to placing the sleeve over the cable. Onshort cable (eg. feet or less), the identification sleeve mayextend the full length of the cable.3.3 Marking with identification tapes. - Printed identifi-cation tapes shall comply with the requirements of the appropriatespecification

、 referenced on the product drawing. Tapes shall beapplied directly around the bundle of wires in the indicatedlocations prior to inserting the bundle into the transparent in-sulation sleeving. The tape shall be wrapped one or two turnsaround one conductor then one and one-half to two turns around th

、ebundle of wires. The required designations shall be ink-stampedor hot-stamped recurrently on the tape at essentially uniformintervals so that the designation will appear at several placesaround the cable. On small cables the minimum number of markingsvisible on the installed tape shall be two, loca

、ted diametrical-ly opposite. The tape shall be wrapped without spiraling andthe designations shall be entirely legible through the sleeving.5Provided by IHSNot for ResaleNo reproduction or networking permitted without license from IHS-,-,-MIL-N-60903A (AR)ILLUSTRATION OF MARKING ON CABLESFIGURE 26Pr

、3.4.1 Coaxial and multiconductor cables. Markings that havebeen hot-stamped directly on the outer jacket of a cable or on anidentification sleeve may be reworked by hot-stamping the new “dash“number (eg. -01) at the side of the obsolete designation. The olddesignation shall not be removed. The surfa

、ce of the insulationshall be clean before hot-stamping the new designation. Example:obsolete designation, “123456-00”, reworked designation,“123456-00-01.”3.4.2 Cables with insulation sleeving. In the rework ofcables, where it is not necessary to remove the connector or insu-lation sleeving, rework

、markings shall be made with identificationtapes (see 3.3). The operation shall be performed by looseningthe clamp and slipping the sleeving back along the bundle of wires. If the obsolete marking is on tape, the old tape shall be removedand replaced with new tape containing the new designation. If th

、eobsolete marking is hot-stamped on the sleeving, tape printed re-currently with the new “dash” number (eg. -01) shall be appliedaround the wires in proper location to appear beside and under thehot-stamped marking (eg. XXXXXX-XX-01). The hot-stamped markingshall not be removed. If it is necessary t

、o remove the connectoror sleeving during rework. the rework markings may be made withidentification tapes, by hot-stamping new designations on the oldsleeving in a manner similar to that specified in 3.4.1, or by hot-stamping a new sleeving.3.5 Workmanship. Hot-stamped markings shall be sharp andcle

、arly defined. The markings shall be applied in such a manneras to be impressed no more than one-fourth the thickness of thematerial and without damage to the insulation. The ink in themarkings shall be adherent. Identification tapes and sleevesshall be neatly applied using good workmanship.4. QUALIT

、Y ASSURANCE PROVISIONS4.1 Inspection. The marked material shall be checked to as-certain that the markings are impressed to provide a permanent mark-ing and that the insulation has not been damaged in the markingprocess. The adhesion of the ink shall be tested by rubbing the8Provided by IHSNot for R
