The findings, published onl

、behavior. Earlier studies have suggested that dogs seem to know when they are being watched and even wait to perform forbidden behavior like digging in the garden when they know their owners arent looking. In this study, researchers studied how human cues triggered begging behavior among 35 pet dogs

、, 18 shelter dogs and 8 wolves raised in captivity. First the animals were taught that the human strangers helping with the experiment were reliable sources of tasty treats. The testers stood close together and called to the animal, and both offered rewards of Spam cubes or Beggin Strips treats.Afte

The dog was held about 20 feet away, equidistant from both testers. In one condition, one tester faced the dog while the other turned her back. In another, a tester he

In a third condition, one tester held a bucket near the shoulder, while the other put the bucket over her head, blocking her eyes. Then, both testers called out to the dogs. All the animalspet

、dogs, shelter dogs and wolvesignored the person whose back was turned and sought food from the person who was looking at them. “The question was, are dogs and wolves responsive to a humans attentional state?“ said Monique Udell, an assistant professor of psychology at Flagler College, Fla. But when

、the testers held books, it was only the domestic dogs who avoided the person who appeared to be reading the book. “In a house where theyre used to people reading books, they are sensitive to those types of cues,“ said Dr. Udell. Interestingly, in the bucket experiment, the animals, for the most part

、, were equally likely to seek food from the person with the bucket over her head as the person holding the bucket. The experiment shows that dogs are tuned into whether humans are paying attention. “Dogs dont have to read our minds. Dogs read our behavior,“ said Dr. Udell. Pet owners often get frustr

、eight of his great-grandparents first set foot in America. It reminds him, he told his Senate colleagues this week, that reforming Americas immigration laws is an “awesome responsibility“. Mr. Kennedy is the Democrat most prominently pushing a bipartisan bill to secure the border, ease the national

、skills shortage and offer a path to citizenship for the estimated 12m illegal aliens already in the country. He has a steep climb ahead of him.As drafted, the bill seeks to mend Americas broken immigration system in several ways. First, and before its other main provisions come into effect, it would

、 tighten border security. It provides for 200 miles (320km) of vehicle barriers, 370 miles of fencing and 18000 new border patrol agents. It calls for an electronic identification system to ensure employers verify that all their employees are legally allowed to work. And it stiffens punishments for

、those who knowingly hire illegals. As soon as the bill was unveiled, it was stoned from all sides. Christans, mostly Republicans, denounced it as an “amnesty“ that would encourage further waves of illegal immigration. Tom Tancredo, a Republican congressman running for president (without hope of succe

、ss ) on an anti-illegal-immigration platform, demanded that all but the border-security clauses be scrapped. Even these he derided as “so limited its almost a joke“. Conservative talk-radio echoed his call. No one is seriously proposing mass deportation, but Mr. Tancredo says the illegals will all g

The AFL-CIO denounced the guest-worker program, which it said would give employers “a ready pool of labor that they can exploit to drive down wages, benefits, health and safety protections“ for every

、one else. Two Democratic senators tried to gut the program. One failed to abolish it entirely; another succeeded in slashing it from 400000 to 200000 people a year.Employers like the idea of more legal migrants but worry that the new system will be cumbersome. Many object to the idea that they will

、have to check the immigration status of all their employees. The proposed federal computer system to sort legal from illegal workers is bound to make mistakes. Even if only one employee in a hundred is falsely labelled illegal, that will cause a lot of headaches. And the points system has drawbacks,

、 too. Employers are better placed than bureaucrats to judge which skills are in short supply. That is why the current mess has advantagesillegal immigrants nearly always go where their labor is in demand.Other groups have complaints, too. Immigrant-rights groups say that the path to citizenship woul

Nancy Pelosi, the Democratic speaker of the House, fretted that the new stress on skills would hurt families, adding that her party is “about families and family values“. Some people worry that House Democrats will kill it to prevent Mr.

、 Bush from enjoying a domestic success.Despite the indignation, public opinion favors the underlying principles. 40、t 3(总题数:1,分数:10.00)People can get emotional about immigration. Bill OReilly, a talk-show host, devoted a recent segment to the story of an illegal alien who got drunk and accidentally killed two attractive white girls with his car. If only he had been deported for previous misdemeanours, Mr. OReilly

、 raged, those girls would still be alive. Another talk-show host, Geraldo Rivera, during an on-air shout-joust(争吵) with Mr. O Reilly, denounced his demagogic choice of story-angle as“ a sin“.President George Bush tried again this week to bring a more rational tone to the debate. He urged the new Dem

、ocratic Congress to revive the immigration reforms that the old Republican Congress killed last year. His proposal was broadly the same as before. He said he wanted to make it harder to enter America illegally, but easier to do so legally, and to offer a path to citizenship for the estimated 12m ill

、egals who have already snuck in.The first part faces few political hurdles and is already well under way. Mr. Bush expects to have doubled the number of Border Patrol agents by the end of next year. The new recruits are being trained. And to defend against the invading legions of would-be gardeners

、and hotel cleaners, the frontier is also equipped with high-tech military gizmos(小发明), such as unmanned spy planes with infra-red(红外) cameras. This may be having some effect. Mr. Bush boasted that the number of people caught sneaking over the border had fallen by nearly 30% this year. And the controv

、ersial part of Mr. Bushs immigration package-allowing more immigrants in and offering those already in America a chance to become legal - is still just a plan. House Republicans squashed it last year. Mr. Bush senses a second chance with the new Democratic Congress, but Democrats, like Republicans,

、are split on the issue. Some, notably Ted Kennedy, think America should embrace hard- working migrants. Others fret that hard-working migrants will undercut the wages of the native-born.Mr. Bush would like to see the pro-immigrant wings of both parties work together to give him a bill he can sign. T

、he Senate is expected to squeeze in a debate next month. The administration is trying to entice law-and-order Republicans on board; a recent leaked memo talked of substantial fines for illegals before they can become legal and“ much bigger“ fines for employers who hire them before they do.The bigges

、t hurdle, however, may be the Democrats reluctance to co-operate with Mr. Bush. Some figure that, rather than letting their hated adversary share the credit for fixing the immigration system, they should stall until a Democrat is in the White House and then take it all. So there is a selfish as well

、 as a moral argument for making a deal.(分数:10.00)(1).The underlined word “misdemeanours“ (Line 3, Paragraph 1) can be replaced by _.A severe crimes.B homicide.C misbehaviors.D nonsense doings.(分数:2.00)A.B.C.D.(2).Which of the following is proposed by Mr. Bush?A Making it harder for immigrants to enter America both le
