(See also 3.2.5 below.) e) (Subclause 5.7) Designate the lengthls) of the pipeline(s1 to be encased in concrete, and state
、 (or give on a drawing) the thickness of concrete required round the pipes. f) (Suhclause 5.9) For connecting sewers 1) state (or give on a drawing or in the schedule) the diameter of the connecting pipe and the main pipe, and the position and depth of the connection to the main sewer; and 2) where
、the relative positions and invert levels at the end of the connecting sewer on an erf boundary and of the main sewer are such that neither a direct connection nor a sloping drop connection (as shown on Drawings LD-7 and LW8 of SABS 1200 LD) is practicable, set out alternative requirements for a suit
、able drop connection, and schedule the connection accordingly. (See also Subclauses 1.1.5 and 1.3.7 of Section LD of Part 3 of the code.) ADDITIONAL CLAUSES GENERAL. Where it is necessary to amplify or otherwise to vary the terms of SABS 1200 LD to render them suitable for use in projects to be carr
、ied out in particular locations or under particular circumstances, include in the project specification clauses dealing with matters other than those covered by Clauses 1 and 2. NORMAL PROJECTS NOTE: To meet requirements imposed by various norms of economic development, projects are classified as no
、rmal, prestige, subeconomic, and labour-based projects (see Clause 4 of Section 0 of Part 3 of the code) . Hightrength or Special Quality Vitrified Clay Pipes (Subclause 3.1.1). Designate the portions of the - pipeline for which pipes are required that a) have been manufactured to tolerances that ar
、e closer than normal, or bi have higher crushing strengths, or C) are to be subjected to special tests to prove their suitability or the suitability of their oitits for we in conveying strong chemical effluents. (See also Subclauses 2.2.2 arid 2.2.3 of Section LD of Part 3 of the code. Elastomeric J
、oints (Subclauses 3.1.1 and 7.1). Where the provision of “suitable approved flexible joints“ means that special jointing or elastomeric materials are required that must be subjected to chemical tests, state the requirements. (See also Subclauses 1.3.1 and 1.3.10.1 of Section LD of Part 3 of the code
、. ) Concrete and Mortar of Dolomitic Aggregate (Subclauses 3.1.2, 3.5.2, 3.5.4, and 3.5.5). Although it is desirable to use dolomitic materials, their use is uneconomic in many parts of the country because of the cost of transport. There is for instance no dolomitic stone in Natal. Where use of dolo
、mitic aggregate is not economic, set out altarnative requirements in a suitable clause or schedule AC or vitrified clay pipes. Acceptable Bows in AC Pipcs on Flat Grades (Subclauscs 3.1.3 and 5.2.2). Unless, as in Subclause 5.2.2 of SAAS 1200 LD, bowed pipes are required to be laid with bows horizon
、Eal, where grades are so nearly flat that the bow or maximum deflection permitted in terms of SABS 819 may cause pooling of sewage and lead to septic problems, jnclude a clause such as the following: PSLD 1.1 Acceptable bows in AC pipes (Subclause 3.1.3). Except that the deviatior from straightness
、shall not exceed 5 mm per 2 m of length, AC sewer pipes shall comply with the reluvant requirrmcnts of SABS 819). Marker Posts (Subclause 3.6). Where Y-section fencinq standards firmly bedded into concrete blocks are - accept.ahle as marker posts, include a clause such as the following: (See also Z.
、l(d) above arid 3.2.10 below. ) PSLD 1.2 !darker posts (Subclause 3.6). Marker posts shall be manufactured from 1,5 m long Y- section fencing standards split for 75 mni at the base and cast into prescribed mix 20 rectalrgular concrete blocks of dimensions at least 200 mm X 200 mm X 100 mm. 1) Asbest

Specify details or show layouts on drawings. Drawing LD-4 of SARS 1200 LD shows some typical layouts. Lowering of Existing
、Manholes (Subclause 5.8). Where the level of the top of an existing manhole is to be lowered to the extent that the reducer slab or sloping portion of the manhole 56 affected, schedule the items and quantities for each type of work required. Alternatively, schedule a lump sum item and srt out in the
、 project specification full details for each manhole of the same design and dimensions or show such details on drawings. Minor Changes to Level of Manhole Covers (Subclause 5.8). Where manhole covers are to be raised or lowered by 100 mm or less, consider a clause such as the following: PSLD 2.1 Adj
、usting level of manhole covers. Each manhole cover and frame shall be removed and the height of the chamber walls reduced or increased as necessary. The cover and frame shall be re-set on a 1:2 cement mortar bed (consisting of one part of cement and two parts of fine sand) in such a manner that the
、top of the cover is flush with the adjacent finished compacted bitumen surface of the road. After the fittings have been re-set, they shall be cleaned of deleterious matter and painted with bitumen on the surfaces that will be in contact with the road surfacing, and freshly prepared premix shall be
、hand-tamped around them. The finished tamping shall be dense, shall blend rrith the rest of the surfacing, and shall present good riding qualities. Re-setting will be measured by the number of manhole covers lowered or raised by up to 100 nun. The rate shall cover the cost of equipment, materials, l
、oading, transportation, heating, mixing, supervision, and labour required to re-set, including locating, marking, excavating, disposal of premix, cleaning, painting of metal with bitumen, supply of fresh premix, tamping to required density and levels, and making good to surrounding surfacing. Connec
、tin Sewers (Subclause 5.9.1). State the locations of er connections in relation to existing fences an: bo&xries if these data are not shown on the drawings. Marking of Positions of Pipe Ends (Subclause 5.9.2). If it is required that the positions of the ends of connections be marked in the field dur
、ing construction, include a clause such as the follwing: (See also 3.2.5 above.) PSLD 2.2 Placing of marker posts (Subclause 5.9.2). A marker post shall be placed a: the end of each connection vertically above its centre line at the time of backfilling and while the end nf the pipe is still exposed.
、 The post shall protrude 0,15 m above qround level or as otherwise ordered. The depth of the invert level below qround level shall be shown, legibly painted in black letters on a yellow background, on one side of the top of the post. Bedding and Infiltration at Manholes (See Subclause 2.2.9 of Secti
、on LD of Part 3 and Subclause 3.1.8 of Section LD of Part 5 of the code). Where infiltration is likely because of high pressure: at the base of a deep manhole in a high water table area, consider a clause such as the following: PSLD 2.3 Special bedding around manholes. The Contractor shall provide a
、 granular 1,edding around the outside of the manhole at . . . . . . . as shown on Drawing LD-3.12). The rate for such a manhole shall cover the additional excavation, supply, and placing of bedding material, backfilling, and disposal of surplus material, in addition to the items specified in Subclau
、ses 8.2.3-8.2.5 of SABS 1200 LD. Testing of Manholes for Watertightness (Subclause 7.2.6). Except in areas where the water table is high and filtration into manholes likely, tests on *.he watertightness of manholes are seldom required. Rendering a precast concrete manhole watertight is relatively ea
、sy and inexpensive (See Drawing LD-5 of SABS 1200 LD), but rendering a brick manhole completely watertight may prove to be more expensive than is warranted. Subclause 5.6.4.3 of SABS 1200 LD provides for the inside walls to be plastered if specifically scheduled or specified, but makes no provision
、for protection against infiltration. Where complete watertightness is required, include a project specification clause that covers the following: a) ?he outside of the brick manhole is to be given two coats of plaster, each coat consisting of 1:3 cement mortar at least 10 mm thick, and the outer coa
、t being steel-trowelled true and smooth so as to make the walls watertight. b) The following test is to be carried out on the completed manhole before it is backfillod in the case of a brick manhole, and after backfilling in the case of a precast manhole: The manhole shall be completely filled with
、water and allowed to stand for 24 h. At the end of this period enough water shall be added to refill the manhole and in the subsequent period of 34 h the water level shall not drop by more than 75 mm per metre of depth of the manhole measured from the channel anvert to the underside of the concrete
、cover slab. C) Rectification, if necessary, is to be carried out at the Contractors expense. d) A payment item is to be included to cover such a test. Other PSLD Clauses. See Subclause 1.3 of Section L0 of Part 3 of the code. PRESTIGE PROJECTS. Include in the project specification clauses dealing wi
、th those portions of the works that require special workmanship and tolerances or testing or other action, SUBECONUMIC PROJECTS. Until a suitable standardized specification has been published, use SABS 1200 LA), when appropriate, or include in the project specification requirements coverin? material
、s, construction, and tolerances that are less stringent than those given in SABS 1200 LD. LABOUR-BASED PROJECTS. Until a suitable standardized specification has been published, use SABS l200 LA), when appropriate, and state which sub clause of SABS 1200 LA will not be applicable to the project (see Subclause 3.4 of Section LA). 2) See Drawing LD-3.1 in Section LD of Part 3 of the code. 3) Urban services (small works) (In course of preparation).
