、evised 2015-07 Superseding J2111 SEP2010 Headlamp Cleaners RATIONALE It has long been understood that dirt has two effects: the scattering of light and the reductions of light in the more intense parts of a headlamp beam pattern. Although loss of light in intense areas is undesirable, the main conce

、rn with the effects of dirt on headlamps is often the increases of light that can occur in the less intense areas, since those increases can result in more glare to the other road users. Water deposit provokes the same modifications of the headlamp beam pattern, but one can estimate that the aerodyn

、amic forces eliminate the droplets quickly. This recommended practice thus concerns only the durable accumulation of solid soiling that the headlamp cleaners eliminate or reduce. In comparison to the preceding version, this standard is modified as follows: Added: Rationale Updated: 2.1.3, 5.3, 6.1.1

、 Corrected: 3.5, 5.1.1, 5.1.2, 6.1, 7.5. 1. 29、from the headlamp lens, or at least 3 m from the DRL lamp lens. The H-V axis of any given lighting function shall be taken as the horizontal and vertical planes passing, at the choice of the manufacturer of the cleaning device: - through the center of the light source of that lighting function, or -

、 through the geometric centroid of the effective light-emitting surface of that lighting function when the lamp is in the position that corresponds to driving on a straight road in forward motion. If the headlamp cleaner mounts in front of, or on the effective light emitting surface and if it is int

、ended for OEM applications, the photometric performance of each headlamp shall be measured first without the cleaner installed and then with the cleaner installed in its parked or normally “off” position. The device with cleaner is to be fixed throughout the environmental tests on a fixture that can

、 be accurately relocated on a goniometer. NOTE: A lamp re-aim of 0.25 degree is permitted after the environmental tests. 5.3.1 Cleaning test 5.3.1.1 The initial illumination shall be measured according to 6.1.1 when the lamp is clean. After the device has been operated for 10 min, the dirt mixture s

、hall be applied evenly to the entire lens surface using a spray gun or a brush. The mixture shall then be dried either by operating the device or using hot air. Repeat this procedure, if necessary, until the luminous intensity at each measured point in Table 2 has been reduced to between 20% and 10%

、 of the initially measured value(s). 5.3.1.2 If a fluid is used for the cleaning operation, the test shall be conducted using fluid as specified by the cleaner manufacturer and/or vehicle manufacturer. If the cleaner is designed to be manually operated, the cleaning shall be accomplished within the

、manufacturers specification for operation and cleaning period. 5.3.1.3 If a fluid is used for the cleaning operation, the test shall be conducted using fluid as specified by the cleaner manufacturer and/or vehicle manufacturer. If the cleaner is designed to be manually operated, the cleaning shall b

、e accomplished within the manufacturers specification for operation and cleaning period. 5.3.1.4 After the device with cleaner has been returned to ambient temperature, and not later than 2 h after application of the dirt mixture the lamp shall be switched on and the cleaner shall be operated for th

、e cleaning period specified by the manufacturer. This cleaning period shall not exceed 10 s. The cleaning fluid used for this test shall be water at 20 3 C. 5.3.1.5 During the test, the duration of the cleaning period and the mean value of the consumption of the cleaning fluid shall be recorded. 5.3

、.1.6 After the cleaning operation, the headlamp shall be allowed to dry. The illumination shall then be measured again and the resulting values assessed as a percentage of the originally measured values 5.3.1.7 If the cleaner is designed to be automatically operated in conjunction with the low beam

、function, it must operate through at least one cleaning period whenever, the lowbeam headlamp being already switched on, the windscreen washers are operated. SAE INTERNATIONAL J2111 Revised JUL2015 Page 6 of 7 6. PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS 6.1 A device with cleaner shall be subject to the vibration te

、st, the dust test and the corrosion test of SAE J575. After completion of these tests, the device with cleaner must show no distortion, displacement, cracking, or rupture of parts (except bulb filaments, if any). Looseness of parts as evidenced by rattling heard when the device and cleaner are shake

、n shall also constitute a failure. Cracking or rupture of parts of the device with cleaner affecting their mounting shall also constitute a failure. 6.1.1 Additional photometric test points for devices with cleaners Table 2 - Lamp with cleaner photometric test points Low Beam Test Points (deg.) If an adaptive driving beam is provided, the photometric requirements shall apply when such system is deactivate

、d. 6.2 Cleaning Efficiency After operation of the cleaner in accordance with 5.3.1.4, the photometric performance of the lighting device(s) measured at the test points shown in Table 2 shall be at least 70% of the values measured when the headlamp is clean. 6.3 Temperature Exposure The headlamp clea

、ner shall not be functionally damaged by water, ice, or snow accumulating on the cleaner, during normal use of the vehicle, or if the cleaning fluid is frozen. Nor shall the cleaner be functionally damaged if exposed to a temperature of 35 or +80 C for 2 h. 6.4 Obstruction Limitation 6.4.1 The photo

、metric requirement of SAE J1383 or the applicable standard shall be met in the event that any part of the headlamp cleaner comes to rest in front of the headlamp, or if any of its normal parked positions shadows part of the effective light-emitting surface of any lighting or light-signaling function

、 present in the lamp. If during normal operation the cleaner moves in front of the illuminating surface of the lowbeam, no minimum test point, per SAE J1383 or the applicable standard, shall be lowered by more than 20% (10% if the high beam application is not integral with the low beam). In the even

、t that any part of the headlamp cleaner comes in front of the effective light-emitting surface of a lamp, the photometric performance of said lamp should be fulfilled when the cleaner is not activated and when the lens of said lamp is perfectly clean. 6.4.2 If the headlamp cleaner is intended for no

、n-OEM applications and if it obstructs the illuminating surface, all minimum photometric requirements, per SAE J1383 or the applicable standard shall be met in the normally “off” position.
