SALIENT CHARACTERISTICS:Tolerances on all parts shall be the same as those identified by
、 the industry for that product. The desiccant port assembly shall have an expected service life of 20 years. The desiccant port shall be capable of functioning properly between -54 and +71 C (-65 and +160 F), when installed through a 102 mm (4.015 in) diameter hole in the wall of a reusable shipping
、 and storage container, with a wall thickness up to 7 mm (0.30 in). The desiccant port shall be capable of maintaining the container environmental seal at 34 kPa (5 psig) pressure or 34 kPa (5 psig) vacuum. The desiccant port cover shall be capable of being removed by hand, requiring no tools to ope
、rate. With the cover removed, the desiccant port shall provide access to the interior volume of the desiccant holder for installation and removal of desiccant.SAE AS5135 - 3 -4.1 Interface Requirements :The desiccant port shall be designed such that it will fit a 102 mm (4.015 in) diameter hole in a
、 flat surface in the container wall. Figure 1 shows one possible configuration of an acceptable desiccant port. Other designs are acceptable provided they meet the basic functional and dimensional requirements specified herein.4.2 Desiccant Port Body:The opening through the desiccant port body shall
、 have a minimum diameter of 87 mm (3.44 in). The overall length of the desiccant port body shall not exceed 51 mm (2.00 in). The desiccant port outside the container including the flange shall not exceed 26 mm (1.00 in). The desiccant port body shall prevent over compression of the gasket and retain
、 the gasket in position when installed. The port body or components shall not cause galvanic corrosion with steel or aluminum containers over the expected life span of 20 years.4.3 Cover Assembly:The desiccant port cover assembly shall be capable of maintaining pressure or vacuum without any leakage
、 when installed. The desiccant port cover shall be capable of being installed or removed with no more than one half turn of the cover, by hand, without the use of tools. The Type III and IV StyleB cover assembly made from steel shall have a zinc-nickel electroplating applied 0.08 mm (0.003 in) thick
、 in accordance with ASTM B 841 Class 1 Type B. The Type V and VI cover assembly made from steel shall have a zinc plate per ASTM B 633, Type II, Sc 3. The holes provided in Style A and B are for the installation of a pressure relief valve. A flat recessed area in the desiccant port cover assembly sh
、all be provided for the holes. The recessed area shall be 15 mm (0.62 in) deep when measured from the outside surface of the desiccant port cover and 70 mm (2.75 in) in diameter. A minimum of three tabs to ease the removal/installation of the cover are required on TypeI, III, and V . The tabs shall
、be approximately 12 mm (0.50 in) high and shall not interfere with the desiccant port functionality or environmental seal. The desiccant port cover shall provide for venting of internal pressure, while opening, before complete removal is possible.4.4 Gasket:The gaskets, when installed in accordance
、with the manufacturers instructions, shall prevent air leakage. Gasket material used shall be ethylene propylene diene material (EPDM) or silicone in accordance with ASTM D 2000.4.5 Washer:The washer shall be used as a buffer between the surface of the container wall and the nut used to secure the d
、esiccant port body. The washer shall be aluminum. SAE AS5135 - 4 -FIGURE 1 - Shows One Possible Configuration of an Acceptable Desiccant PortSAE AS5135 - 5 -4.6 Nut :The nut shall secure the desiccant port body through the container wall so that there is no loosening during container testing or loss
、 of environmental seal. The nut shall be capable of withstanding a torque of 17 Nm (150 in-lb). The nut shall be the same material as the desiccant port body.4.7 Retaining Cable/Lanyard:The desiccant port cover assembly shall be tethered to the desiccant port body with a stainless steel braided cabl
、e/lanyard. The cable shall be long enough to allow for installation and removal of the cover assembly without interference and short enough that it does not interfere with other operations, or pose a safety hazard, i.e., entanglement. The attachment point on the main body shall utilize 300 series st
、ainless steel screws. A provision for replacement of the cover shall be provided without adversely effecting the security seal requirements.4.8 Security Seal Provision:A security seal provision shall be provided to reveal unauthorized entry into the container cavity. A hole may be drilled through th
、e desiccant port body flange for security seal attachment.4.9 Desiccant Holder:The desiccant holder shall be aluminum, not less than 85 mm (3.35 in) inside diameter, and permanently attached to the desiccant port and retain the desiccant unit bags as required. The desiccant holder shall have holes i
、n it that will allow for the free passage of air from the container to the desiccant. Three different length desiccant holders are available. All other characteristics of the desiccant port, desiccant port assembly, nut, and washer shall be as specified. A provision for attachment of desiccant holde
、r may be provided for securing support of holder opposite opening end.4.10 Product Marking:The cover assembly shall be marked with manufacturers name and part number, as well as instructional marking on opening and closing using best commercial practice.SAE AS5135 - 6 -5. TEST REQUIREMENTS :5.1 Leak
、 Testing:Desiccant Port assembly shall show no evidence of leaking in either direction when submerged under water for a minimum of 1 min and pressurized to 28.0 +7.0 -0.0 kPa (4.0 +1.0 -0.0 psig). Sample lot size shall be selected in accordance with ANSI/ASQC Z1.4 1993, Table I, General Inspection L
、evel II, Single Sample Plan 1.5 AQL. A recommended test procedure is to seal the hole in the cover assembly, if applicable, install the desiccant port into a small test fixture that can be pressurized on one side while the opposite side is submerged under water a minimum of 6 mm (0.25in). Release of
、 any air bubble from the submerged surface within a 1 min period shall be cause for rejection. Reverse the desiccant port assembly in the test fixture and repeat the above test so the opposite surface can be submerged and examined for leakage.5.2 Cover Assembly Test:The desiccant port cover assembly
、 shall be capable of being removed by hand.6. QUALITY ASSURANCE PROVISIONS:The contractor shall certify and maintain substantiating evidence that the product offered meets the salient characteristics of the document. The product shall conform to the producers own drawings, specifications, standards,
、 and quality assurance practices. If port has not been previously supplied by vendor, a first article shall be required. A sample shall be subjected to first article inspection and a copy of relevant test reports shall be provided.PREPARED BY SAE SUBCOMMITTEE EG-1D, PROPULSION TRANSPORTATION EQUIPMENT OF COMMITTEE EG-1, AEROSPACE PROPULSION SYSTEMS SUPPORT EQUIPMENT
