、 i 2016 National Electrical Manufacturers Association AMERICAN NATIONAL STANDARD Approval of an American National Standard requires verification by The American National Standards Institute, Inc. (ANSI) that the requirements for due process, consensus, and other criteria for approval have been met b

、y the standards developer. An American National Standard implies a consensus of those substantially concerned with its scope and provisions. Consensus is established when, in the judgment of the ANSI Board of Standards Review, substantial agreement has been reached by directly, and materially affect

、ed interests. Substantial agreement means much more than a simple majority, but not necessarily unanimity. Consensus requires that all views and objections be considered, and that a concerted effort be made toward their resolution. The existence of an American National Standard does not in any respe

It is intended as a guide to aid the manufacturer, the consumer, and the general public. The American National St

、the physical and electrical requirements of the principal types of single-ended low-pressure sodium lamps. The electrical data provides the specific basis for ballast requirements for these lamps. 2 Normative References The following standards contain provisions which, through reference in this text

、mance specifications 3 Lamp Designations Designations for low-pressure sodium lamps are assigned in accordance with ANSI C78.380. For reference, the older designations are shown in parentheses in the lamp data sheets. Note that the number (two or three digits) following the first letter in the desig

、nation (L for low pressure sodium), indicates a unique set of electrical characteristics. Following the number is a slash followed by a luminaire characteristic letter. Low-pressure sodium lamps are typically used in enclosed luminaires and have a luminaire characteristic code of “E.” Marking low-pr

、essure sodium lamps with the ANSI designation is not required. 4 Bulb Designations Bulb designations are defined in ANSI C79.1. Due to long-term use of the conventional method of bulb designations, that use will continue herein with the equivalent metric bulb designations shown in parentheses (i.e.,

、 BT28 BT90) in contrast with the use of metric primary dimensions elsewhere in this standard. 5 Base Specifications The BY22d base is described in ANSI C81.61. 6 Maximum Outline Drawings The maximum outline drawings in Part III of this standard show the maximum limits of the space that may be occupi

、ed by any part of the bulb for each lamp type. These limits are in accordance with IEC 60192. Most luminaires for low-pressure sodium lamps constrain the dome end of the lamp and take up any eccentricity of the lamp by means of a moveable base holder. Accordingly, the maximum outline drawings allow

、for the maximum bulb diameter at the dome end and for eccentricity at the base end. 7 Other Safety Requirements and Information Lamps shall comply with the requirements of ANSI/IEC C78.62035. Low-pressure Sodium lamps contain a quantity of sodium that may heat from a reaction with moisture in the ai

、r or on the skin if the lamp is broken. Sodium may burn spontaneously when exposed to air. Consult the lamp manufacturers literature for information on the proper use, care, and disposal of these lamps. ANSI C78.41-2016 Page 3 2016 National Electrical Manufacturers Association 8 Methods of Measureme

、nt An American National Standard for methods of measuring the electrical characteristics and the bulb and base temperatures of low-pressure sodium lamps has not been written. General guidelines for these measurements may be found in ANSI C78.389 and IEC 60192. 9 Electrical Characteristics 9.1 Lamp O

、perating Characteristics The values of lamp volts, amperes, and watts shown on the individual lamp data sheets in Part II of this standard apply for lamps that have aged 100 hours. Lamp rms voltage may increase with operating hours. Contact the lamp manufacturer for details. 9.2 Warm-up Time Bare la

、mps operating in still air shall reach a stabilized voltage within the time limit and at the ambient temperature specified on the applicable lamp data sheet in Part II of this standard. For purposes of this test, low-pressure sodium lamps have reached a stabilized voltage when their voltage does not

、 vary more than 2% in any one-minute period. Lamps shall meet this requirement when operated on the appropriate reference ballast specified in Part II, section 4, and in the allowed operating position most adverse to warm-up. 10 Reference Ballasts Reference ballasts shall meet the general requiremen

、ts described in ANSI C82.5. 11 Ballast Design General ballast requirements are described in ANSI C82.4. The following requirements shall be met over the full range of input voltage allowed for the ballast. 11.1 Open Circuit Voltage The minimum ballast open circuit voltages shown on the individual la

、mp data sheets assure starting and operating reliability over lamp life. The percentage probability has not yet been determined. 11.2 Starting Current Starting current shall be measured 515 seconds after the lamp has been energized and shall be within the limits shown on the applicable lamp data she

、et. 12 Information for Luminaire Design 12.1 Lamp Temperatures Luminaire design shall be such that the maximum lamp temperatures given in the physical characteristics section of the relevant lamp data sheet of Part II are not exceeded. 12.2 Lamp Operating Position A luminaire shall maintain the lamp

、 within its allowable operating position limits. ANSI C78.41-2016 Page 4 2016 National Electrical Manufacturers Association 12.3 Maximum Lamp Outlines The information in clause 6 and the maximum lamp outlines in Part III provide guidance for the designers of luminaires. For mechanical acceptance of lamps complying with this standard, a free space should be provided in the luminaires based on these maximum outlines.
