、pproval of an American National Standard requires verification by ANSI that the requirements for due process, consensus, and other criteria for approval have been met by the standards developer. Consensus is established when, in the judgment of the ANSI Board of Standards Review, substantial agreeme

Consensus requires that all views and objections be considered, and that a concerted effort be made toward their resolution. The use of Amer

、ungsten-halogen lamps shall conform to those shown in Figure 2. The dimensions of single-ended tungsten-halogen lamps shall conform to those shown in Tables 4,5, 6, and 7. NOTE: The metric equivalent values for light center length (LCL) have been shown to the nearest millimeter; those for maximum ov

、erall length (MOL) and other dimensions have been shown to the nearest tenth of a millimeter. Where rounding was necessary, it was done in accordance with ANSI/IEEE 268. 7 Base alignment (double-ended lamps only) The base alignment of double-ended lamps shall be checked using a base alignment gauge

、that conforms to Figure 3. The two ends of the lamps shall seat fully in the gauge. If the lamp does not seat fully in the gauge, it is rejectable. The purpose of the base alignment gauge described in Figure 3 is to check the alignment of the base and seal at one end of the lamp with respect to the

、base and seal at the other end of the lamp. The testing shall be done in the following manner: With one end of the lamp inserted in the fixed end of the gauge and the lamp held in a horizontal position, the movable portion of the gauge is brought toward the lamp until the free end of the lamp enters

、 the slot of the movable portion. 8 Information for luminaire design 8.1 Seal temperature In the lamps covered by this standard, the metal-to-glass seal at the end(s) of the lamp is intended for operation at temperatures not exceeding 350C (662F). All equipment in which these lamps are to be used sh

、ould, therefore, be so designed that seal temperature can be maintained below this limit. The temperature measurement should be made with the thermocouple junction located over the central part of the metal-foil seal and in direct contact with the outer surface of the bulb material. See ANSI/IEC C78

、.682 for further information. 8.2 Contact force (double-ended lamps only) The force exerted on the lamp contacts shall not exceed 7 pounds (3 N). The minimum force needed to maintain good electrical contact is dependent upon the type of contact materials used. Care should be taken to choose a suitab

、le combination of contact force and contact materials so as to ensure adequate electrical contact under prolonged high-temperature operation. 8.3 Operation position For linear-source double-ended lamps, the axis of the bulb shall be within 4 degrees of the horizontal. For other types of lamps, there

、 are no operation position restrictions unless otherwise stated by the manufacturer. ANSI C78.260-2002 Copyright 2002 by American National Standard Lighting GroupNEMA 4 8.4 Shielding To assure maximum safety during handling and use of the subject lamps, the following notices should be observed: Alwa

、ys read and observe the information contained in the lamp manufacturers caution notice. Most tungsten-halogen lamps operate at high temperatures and internal gas pressures above atmospheric pressure. Consequently, a lamp could shatter. Certain lamps may also emit some amount of ultraviolet radiation

、. Therefore, a suitable protective shield, screening technique, or both, shall be used with the luminaire to protect people and surroundings from both hazards, except when the lamp is: a. labeled “Low Pressure, Low Voltage“ tungsten halogen, i.e., a lamp with a rated voltage not to exceed 12 volts a

、nd a working gas pressure below 2.5x105Pa (2.5 bar) as defined in IEC 60432-3. b. G9 based lamps that conform to the requirements of ANSI/IEC 60432-2 NOTE: UV protective shield may be required, consult the manufacturer for details. c. or manufactured with doped, UV blocking, quartz bulbs. NOTE: A shield for shattering may still be required, consult the manufacturer for details. Some commonly used Low Pressure, Low Voltage capsules are listed in Table 7. 8.5 Base/holder fits for lamps of table 6 - “General purpose lamps”
