SCOPE 1.1 Scope. This specification

    2、 describes three (3) material categories for use in constructing thermal spray coatings, consisting of metallic andlor non-metallic components. These powdered materials may be suitable for application using either plasma arc or combustion gas (flame spray) techniques. 1.2 Classification. Thermal spr

    3、ay powders covered in shall be according to the following Types (chemical compos (particle size distribution). his specifi cation tion) and Classes 1.2.1 Types. Type I - Metallics Type II - Non-Metallics Type III - Mixtures of either Type I and Type I, Type I and Type II or Type II and Type II mater

    4、ials. 1.2.2 Classes. In the event of a conflict between the text of this document and the references cited herein (except for as

    16、sociated detail specifications), the text of this document shall take precedence. Nothing in this document, however, shall supersede applicable laws and regulations unless a specific exemption has been obtained. 3. REQUIREMENTS 3.1 Associated detail specifications. The individual item requirements 0

    17、 shall be as specified herein and in accordance with the applicable detail specifications. specification and the detail specifications, the latter shall govern. In the event of any conflict between the requirements of this 3.2 First article. First article inspection may consist of a preproduction sa

    18、mple or a first article sample selected from the first production lot of the contract or purchase order. It shall be inspected in accordance with 4.4.(see 6.3). 3.3 Chemical and physical properties. The chemical and physical properties shall conform to 3.3.1 through 3.3.4, as specified in the detail

    19、 specification sheet, when tested as spec fied in 4.6. 3.3.1 Vi sua1 appearance. Al 1 therma shape and color; clean; dry, non-packing determined in 4.6.1. spray powders shall be of uniform and free of contaminants as 3.3.2 Chemical composition. The chemical composition shall be as specified in the a

    20、pplicable detail specification sheet and determined in accordance with 4.6.2. The formulation and source of raw material shall be maintained and recorded in accordance with 4.5.1. 3.3.3 Particle size/distribution analysis. The powder particle size and gistribution shall be as specified in the applic

The materials ability to flow in a satisfactory manner and cons

    22、truct an acceptable thermal spray deposit shall be demonstrated. Acceptance criteria shall be as specified herein and in the applicable specification sheet when determined in accordance with 4.6.4. 3.3.4.1 Macroscopic examination. The as-sprayed coating when examined at 10 to 20x magnification shall

    23、 have a uniform appearance, Surface defects shall be limited to small nodules not to exceed 1.14mm (0.045 in) in diameter and shall not exceed 0.38mm (0.015 in) above the surrounding sprayed surface. The coating shall not contain any: (a) Blisters (b) Cracks (c) Chips or loosely-adhering particles (

    24、d) Pits exposing the undercoat or substrate metal lographic laboratory methods for thermal spray coatings shall show microstructures containing the specific characteristics for the coating composition under evaluation including interface condition, cracks, porosity, oxides and oxide stringers, globu

    25、lar particles, unreacted particles and uniformity of constituents. Coating microstructures shall be free from inclusions and contamination at the coating-base metal interface and from cracks, massive porosity and excessive oxides to the extent specified in the appropriate specification sheet. 3.3.4.

    26、2 Metallographic examination. Coatings when prepared using standard 3.3.4.2.1 Interface condition. Up to 20% of the interface of a cross-section not less than 1.91mm (0.75 in) in length containing grit, fine contamination or oxides with no separation is acceptable. 3.3.4.2.2 Cracks. Coatings shall b

    27、e free from cracks. Microcracks that are a normal characteristic of a particular coating composition are not rejectable. 3.3.4.2.3 Porosity. Refer to the applicable detail specification sheet for limits on coating porosity. Porosity in excess of that specified in the detail specification sheet or ma

    28、ssive porosity is cause for rejection. 3.3.4.2.4 Oxides, globular particles, unreacted particles. Refer to the coating microstructure requirements on the applicable detail specification sheet. 3.3.4.2.5 Uniformity of constituents. Unless otherwise specified by the detail specification sheet, coating

    29、s shall show a uniform distribution of microstructural constituents. 3.3.5 Deposit efficiency. Unless otherwise specified, the deposit efficiency shall be as specified in the applicable detail specification sheet when tested in accordance with 4.6.6. 3.6 Material safety data sheets. The contracting

    30、activity and the Naval Air Engineering Center (NAEC) shall be provided with a Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) at the time, of the contract award. The MSDS is form OSHA-20 and is found as part of FED-STD-313. shipment of the material covered by this specification. (see 6.5) The MSDS shall be includ

QUALITY ASSURANCE PROVISIONS 4.1 Responsibility for inspection. Unless otherwise specified in the contract or purchase order, the cont

    32、ractor is responsible for the performance of all inspection requirements (examinations and tests) as specified herein. Except as otherwise specified in the contract or purchase order, the contractor may use his own or any other facilities suitable for the performance of the inspection requirements s

    33、pecified herein, unless disapproved. by the Government. The Government reserves the right to perform any of the inspections set forth in the specification where such inspections are deemed necessary to assure supplies and services conform to prescribed requi rements. 4.1.1 Responsibility for complia

    34、nce. All items must meet all requirements of Sections 3 and 5. The inspection set forth in this specification shall become a part of the contractors overall inspection system or quality program. The absence of any inspection requirements in the specification shall not relieve the contractor of the r

    35、esponsibility of assuring that all products or supplies submitted to the Government for acceptance comply with all requirements of the contract. Sampling in quality conformance does not authorize submission of known defective material, either indicated or actual, nor does it commit the Government to

    36、 acceptance of defective material. 4.2 Classification of inspection . herein are classified as follows: The inspection requirements specified on (see 4.4). a. First article inspect b. Quality conformance inspection (see 4.5). 4.3 Inspection conditions. Unless otherwise specified, all inspections sha

    37、ll be performed in accordance with the test conditions specified in the documents referenced in 4.5. 4.4 First article inspection. First article inspection shall be conducted a laboratory satisfactory to Naval Air Engineering Center, Systems ineering and Standardization Department, Materials Branch

    38、(Code 5314), First article inspection shall consi st of the Lakehurst NJ 08733-5100. examinations and tests specified in 4.6. be provided to the contracting officer and to the Naval Air Engineering Center. Reports of first article tests shall 4.5 Quality conformance inspection. Quality conformance i

    39、nspection shall be applied to each powder lot prior to being offered for acceptance under contract. The quality conformance inspection shall consist of the examinations and tests specified in Table I. The vendor, contractor, or. powder manufacturer shall provide test results with each powder lot, de

    40、monstrating the powders conformance to the applicable specification sheet, and an equipment parameter sheet as shown in Figures 1 and 2, The spray parameters in accordance with Figure 2, which are required to produce the coating properties of the applicable detail specification shall be provided, as

    41、 a minimum for the commercial equipment used to establish the properties. Failure of the powder samples to pass any of the examinations or tests shall be cause for rejection of the lot. The Government reserves the right to perform any of the inspections set forth in the specification, where such ins

    42、pections are deemed necessary to assure supplies and services conform to o prescribed requirements. The contractor

    44、 shall keep inspection records complete and available to the procuring activity for not less than three years from the date the powder is shipped. 4.5.2 Sampling. 4.5.2.1 Powders. Test samples for inspection of powders shall be taken from inspection units selected at random from each lot or batch in

    45、 accordance with ASTM B 215. Sufficient powder shall be taken from each inspection unit to perform not less than two (2) evaluations for each test. selected from each lot of powder and tested per 4.6.7. 4.5.2.2 Containers. Chemical composition shall be determined by 4.6.3 Particle size. Powders shall be tested in accordance with ASTM B 214, ASTM C 117, or

    48、other method acceptable to the cognizant engineering act i vi ty . 4.6.4 Sprayabili ty. 4.6.4.1 Material sprayability. A test panel nominally constructed of an annealed ferrous or non-ferrous metal, or as prescribed by contract or purchase order shall be suitably prepared to receive the thermal spra

    49、y deposit. The test panel shall be not less than 25.4mm (1.0 in) x 76.2mm (3.0 in) x 2.54mm (0.10 in).
