This specification covers the requirements for all embroidered, uni-sized, sleeve insignia worn by enlisted male and female personnel of the Navy. * 1.2 Classification. Samples, when furnished, are solely for guidance and information to the contractor (see 6.3). Variations fr
20、om this specification may appear in the sample in which case this specification shall govern. * 3.2 First article. When specified, (see 6.2), a sample shall be subjected to first article inspection in accordance with 4.3. 3.3 Material. 3.3.1 Base cloth. The base cloth shall be cotton or a polyester/
21、cotton blend, twill weave, single or plied yarns, 6.0 to 8.0 ounces per square yard, with a minimum breaking strength of 150 pounds in the warp and 70 pounds in the filling. The cloth shall be dyed black and the use of sulphur dyes is prohibited. The dyed cloth shall have not less than fair colorfas
22、tness to laundering. Shrinkage in laundering shall be not more than 2.0 percent in the warp or filling direction. Testing shall be as Specified in Table II. 3.3.2 -Embroidery yarn and thread. * 3.3.2.1 Background (schiffli) and cover stitching, The yarn used for the backround and overedge cover stit
23、ching for all types and classes of insignia shall be a texturized, polyester continuous filament yarn. The yarn size before texturizing shall be 150 (t 5) denier, 2 ply, 34 filaments per ply, and shall have 1 1/2 turns per inch-of “S“ twist. After texturizing, the yarn size shall be approximately 17
24、0 (+ 5) denier. The color shall be Black, Cable No. 67138, in accordance with th Standard Shades for Threads. Sulphur dyes are not permitted. Colorfastness requirements shall be as specified in 3.3.2.5. Testing shall be as specified in Table II. 3.3.2.2 Thread (bobbin). The bobbin thread shall eithe
25、r be a good commercial grade of two ply (minimum) undyed cotton thread or a continuous filament undyed (white) nylon thread equal to or better than the quality of the specified cotton thread. 3.3.2.3 Thread (needle and looper). The needle and looper thread used in the overedge cover stitching shall
26、be cotton conforming to type IC2, ticket No. 00, 3 ply of V-T-276. The color shall be black and approximately match the color of the polyester overedge cover thread in 3.3.2.1. * 3.3.2.4 Rayon yarn (overlay). The yarn used for the eagle, chevrons, striker mark, specialty mark, type IV service stripe
27、s and group rate mark shall be a bright, continuous filament, regenerated cellulose type rayon. Sulphur dyes are not permitted. The dyed polyes
30、ter and rayon yarns shall show fastness to light, wet-dry cleaning, dry and wet heat (hot pressing), laundering and crocking equal to or better than the standard sample when tested as specified in 4.4.5. As a limit of acceptability or when no standard sample is available, the dyed polyester and rayo
31、n yarns shall show a minimum of “good“ fastness to light, wet-dry cleaning, dry and wet heat (hot pressing), laundering and an AATCC wet and dry crocking rating not lower than 5.0, when tested as specified in 4.4.5. * 3.3.2.6 Matching. The dyed polyester and rayon yarns shall match the available sta
32、ndard shade sample when viewed under filtered tungsten lamps that approximate artificial daylight, having a correlated color temperature of 7500 (+ 200) K, with illumination of 100 (+ 20) foot candles and shall be a good match to the standard shade sample under incandescent lamplight at 2300 (i- - 2
33、00) K. * 3.4 Construction. The insignia shall be schiffli embroidered on an automatic type embroidery machine in accordance with this specification, guide sample and the applicable stitch enlargement listed in Table I. Finished measurements for the insignia shall be as shown in Figures 1 through 11.
34、 3.4.1 Ground/overlay stitches. The ground and overlay stitches shall be in accordance with the applicable stitch enlargement and shall completely cover the applicable background design area in a close, dense and tightly drawn manner to praduce a clear, sharp execution of the design. The base reinfo
35、rcement cloth shall not be visible. 3.4.2 Stiele stitches. Stiele stitches used as a border for the chevrons, group rate marks, and service stripes shall be in accordance with the applicable stitch enlargement or guide sample and shall be tightly drawn and well executed to produce a clear, sharp bor
36、der and shall completely cover the background embroidery. The width of the Stiele border stitch shall be 1/16 inch. 3.4.3 Edge stitching. Unless otherwise specified, the edges of the embroidered insignia shall be overedged with a Schrage stitch or a combination of Blatt and Schrage or Stiele stitche

The edge stitching shall be as indicated on the applicable stitch enlargement
38、 or guide sample. 3.4.4 Overedge cover stitching. Unless otherwise specified, the insignia shall have a second row of overedging covering the first row of edge stitching specified in 3.4.3. The overedge cover stitching shall conform to stitch types 504 or 505 of FED-STD-751, using 26 (+ 4) stitches
39、per inch with a stitch bight of 118 (- 1/32, +O) inch. The nedle and looper threads shall be cotton as specified in 3.3.2.3 and the cover thread shall be two ends (stitching as one) of polyester as specified in 3.3.2.1. The stitching shall start and finish at either top corner of the insignia and th
40、ere shall be approximately a half inch overlap of the stitching. Stitching shall completely cover the edge of the embroidered cloth. The free end of the overedge stitching chain shall extend a minimum of 1/2 inch, turned and secured to the backside of the insignia with a pressure sensitive tape or m
41、asking tape and shall not be visible on the face of the insignia. The iiiasking tape shall be no closer than 1/8 inch from the overedging. 3.4.5 Cuttin e The completely embroidered insignia shall be cut from the base clot4 properly trimmed before the cover overedging operation in 3.4.4. The Schrage
42、edgestitching shall not be cut. 3.4.6 Resin stiffener. The embroidered base cloth may be treated on the reverse sidk with a resin fabric finish to facilitate subsequent processing of the insignia. The resin finish shall have no adverse visual or physical effect on the finished insignia. 3.5 Toleranc
43、es. Unless otherwise specified, the overall measurement of the finished insignia shall have a plus or minus tolerance of 1/8 inch. Other measurements 1/2 inch or less shall be - + 1/32 inch and more than 1/2 inch, - + 1/16 inch. 3.6 Design. Stitch enlargements shall be furnished by the Government to
44、 the contractor for use in preparing the necessary punchings. The stitch enlargements shall not be altered in any way. Before production is commenced punchings shall be approved by the Government for conformity to requirements for minimum number of stitches as specified for the applicable insignia i
