    2、s Administration has authorized the use ofthis Commercial Item Description, for all federal agencies.1. SCOPE1.1 Scope . This description covers a thread lubricantresistant to galling at room temperature, resistantto seizing at elevated temperatures, and having alow coefficient of friction range.2.

    3、Salient characteristics.2.1 Formulation.2.1.1 The lubricant shall nominally consist of 15-16weight percent calcium hydroxide, 10-11 weightpercent zirconium dioxide, 5-6 weight percentpolyisobutylene, 21 weight percent graphite, andmineral oil (balance).2.1.2 Detrimental Materials : The lubricant sha

    4、ll containless than 10 parts per million ( ppm) mercury, andless than 250 ppm of each of the following elements:antimony, bismuth, cadmium, lead, tin, zinc, sulfur,phosphorus, chlorine, bromine, and fluorine.Beneficial comments (recommendations, additions, deletions) andany pertinent data which may

    6、ot for ResaleNo reproduction or networking permitted without license from IHS-,-,-A-A-59004A22.1.3 The lubricant shall have been certified andassigned a “Limited“ or “Permitted“ usage categoryin accordance with the Nuclear Powered SubmarineAtmosphere Control Manual (NAVSEA S9510-AB-ATM-010(U).2.1.4

    7、The lubricant shall not contain any Class I or ClassII ozone depleting substances as designated by theEnvironmental Protection Agency in 40 CFR 82.2.2 Galling resistance.2.2.1 Fastener materials tested in accordance with 2.2.3shall show no evidence of galling, defined as: (a)inability to achieve loa

    8、ding to 67 percent of thefastener material yield strength, (b) audible“clicking“ during the loading cycles of 2.2.3, or(c) gouges, greater than five occurrences of raisedmetal, or missing material from more than 5 percentof the engaged thread area, when examined at 2 OXmagnification.2.2.2 Fastener m

    9、aterial test assemblies shall be preparedfrom three material combinations: (a) annealed UNSS30400 studs and nuts, (b) UNS G41400 quenched andtempered studs and nuts (minimum yield strength 105ksi), and (c) UNS N05500 annealed and aged studswith UNS N04400 nuts. Studs shall be 3/4-10 UNC 2A,five inch

    10、es long, with rolled threads. Nuts shallbe 3/4-10 UNC 2B. For each material combination, twoassemblies shall be tested. A carbon steel washershall be used on each test assembly.Visually inspect the stud and nut threads, theunderside of the nuts, and the washer faces toensure the absence of surface i

    11、rregularities such asburrs, nicks, or displaced metal. The surfacefinish of these surfaces shall be 8 - 63 Ra.2.2.3 Test procedure : Clean the fasteners. Apply thelubricant to the stud and nut threads, the undersideof the nuts, and the washer faces. Wipe off anyexcess. Using a calibrated torque wren

    12、ch with j_2percent or better accuracy, torque the assembly to67 5 percent of the yield strength of the stud. Atorque-tension tester, such as a Skidmore-WilhelmModel RL or equivalent, is recommended for thisProvided by IHSNot for ResaleNo reproduction or networking permitted without license from IHS-

    13、,-,-A-A-59004A3test, assembled in accordance with figure 1.Untorque. Repeat three more torque/ untorque cycles.Then clean off the lubricant completely, and inspectfor galling. Reapply the lubricant, and perform fourmore torque/ untorque cycles. Clean off thelubricant and inspect for galling again. A

    14、llinspections shall be at 2 OX magnification.2.3 Seizing resistance.2.3.1 Fasteners tested in accordance with 2.3.3 shall showno evidence of seizing, defined as inability todisassemble the fastener assembly after elevatedtemperature exposure in accordance with 2.3.3, or abreakaway torque exceeding 3

    15、00 percent of theinstallation torque after elevated exposure inaccordance with 2.3.3, whichever occurs first. Also,lubricants shall be capable of removal from thestuds by cloths dampened with denatured alcohol orisopropyl alcohol, after exposure in accordance with2.3.3.2.3.2 Fastener assembly test m

    16、aterial combinations shallbe the same as those used in the galling resistancetest (2.2.2), except that no washer is required.For each material combination, one test assemblyshall be tested. Fasteners shall be new and shallnot have been used in previous tests.Visually inspect the stud and nut threads

    17、, and theunderside of the nuts to ensure the absence ofsurface irregularities such as burrs, nicks, ordisplaced metal. The surface finish of thesesurfaces shall be 8-63 Ra.2.3.3 Test procedure : Clean the fasteners. Apply thelubricant to the stud and nut threads and to the nutmating surfaces. Wipe o

    18、ff any excess. Using acalibrated torque wrench with j_2 percent or betteraccuracy, torque the nuts together to produce 67 15percent of the yield strength of the stud.Disassemble, clean, and relubricate the threads andnuts. Retorque to 67 .15 percent of the yieldstrength of the stud, and record the t

    19、orque valueapplied. Place the assemblies in a furnace for sixweeks at 650F 25F. Remove and disassemble.Record the breakaway torque. Clean the studs withcloths dampened with denatured alcohol or isopropylalcohol and visually inspect for lubricant removal.Provided by IHSNot for ResaleNo reproduction o

    20、r networking permitted without license from IHS-,-,-A-A-59004A42.4 Coefficient of friction.2.4.11 Fasteners of material combination (a) of 2.4.2, whentested in accordance with 2.4.3, shall have acoefficient of friction range between 0.06 and 0.16at the 90/95 tolerance level (i.e., 90 percentconfiden

    21、ce that 95 percent of the data will fallwithin this range), and a mean value between 0.108and 0.110. Fasteners of material combination (b),(c) and (d) of 2.4.2 shall have a coefficient offriction range between 0.07 and 0.12 at the 90 /95tolerance level (i.e., 90 percent confidence that 95percent of

    22、the data will fall within this range),and a mean value between 0.089 and 0.100.2.4.2 Fastener assembly test assemblies sha ll be preparedfrom four material combinations: (a) UNS N06625studs and nuts in accordance with ASTM B446 Grade I,(b) bare UNS G41400 quenched and tempered studs andnuts (minimum

    23、 105 ksi yield strength), (c) manganesephosphate coated UNS G41400 quenched and temperedstuds and nuts (minimum 105 ksi yield strength), and(d) UNS N05500 annealed and aged studs with UNSN04400 nuts. Studs shall be 3/4-10 UNC 2A, fiveinches long, with rolled threads. Nuts shall be 3/4-10 UNC 2B. For

    24、 each material combination, fiveassemblies shall be tested, except that twoassemblies shall be tested for the bare UNS G41400.Fasteners shall be new and shall not have been usedin previous tests.Visually inspect the stud and nut threads, and theunderside of the nuts to ensure the absence ofsurface i

    25、rregularities such as burrs, nicks, ordisplaced metal. The surface finish of thesesurfaces shall be 8-63 Ra.2.4.3 Test procedure : Clean the fasteners. Apply thelubricant to the stud and nut threads, the undersideof the nuts, and the washer faces. Wipe off anyexcess. Using a calibrated torque wrench

    26、 with anaccuracy of .12 percent or better and a SkidmoreWilhelm Model RL torque tension tester orequivalent, torque each assembly to 67 J.5 percentof the yield strength of the stud, in fiveapproximately equal load increments. See Figure 1.Disassemble, relubricate, and repeat the torquingsequence ( f

Disassemble.2.4.3.1 Repeat the procedure of 2.4.3.2.4.3.2 Calculate the coefficient of f

    28、riction for eachtorque increment during the relubricated cycles onlyof 2.4.3 and 2.4.3.1, using the equation given inFigure 2. Determine the 90/95 tolerance level forthe range of the data and the mean, using standardstatistical tables such as Table A-6 of Handbook 91,Experimental Statistics, U.S. De

    29、partment ofCommerce, published by the U.S. Government PrintingOffice, Washington DC 20402.2.5 Corrosion resistance.2.5.1 Lub ricated fasteners tested in accordance with 2.5.3through 2.5.6 shall show no pitting, corrosion, ordegradation beyond that indicated in 2 . 5 . 3 through2 . 5 . 6 .2.5.2 Four

    30、corrosion tests shall be performed, as detailedbelow. For Tests I and 2, studs shall be 2.5 incheslong. For Tests 3 and 4, studs shall be 5.0 incheslong. For all tests, studs shall be 3/4-10 UNC 2Aand nuts shall be 3/4-10 UNC 2B. Fasteners shall becleaned prior to testing.2.5.3 Detailed requirements

    31、 for Corrosion Test 1.2.5.3.1 Specimen Preparation2.5.3.1.1 Apply the lubricant to one stud and four nuts ofeach material code listed in table 1. Wipe offexcess lubricant.2.5.3.1.2 Prepare each test specimen by threading four nutsonto a stud of the same material code. Torque thefirst nut against the

    32、 second nut and torque thethird nut against the fourth nut. Torque to achieve10 +_l percent of the stud material yield strength.2.5.3.1.3 After positioning the nuts, wipe the ends of thestud and the side faces of two of the four nuts witha clean cloth dampened with isopropyl alcohol toremove excess

    33、lubricant. Ensure that the lubricantcovers the side faces of two remaining nuts.2.5.3.2 Test Procedure2.5.3.2.1 Place all test specimens into a furnace at 250F Provided by IHSNot for ResaleNo reproduction or networking permitted without license from IHS-,-,-A-A-59004A610F and hold for 750 hours.2.5.

    34、3.2.2 When the test run is completed, remove the testspecimens from the furnace. Disassemble and cleanthe studs and nuts using clean nylon bristle brushesand inspect at 2 OX magnification. The amount ofcorrosive attack on the lubricated areas of thefasteners shall be no greater than on theunlubricat

    35、ed region of the fasteners.2.5.4 Detailed requirements for Corrosion Test 2.2.5.4.1 Specimen Preparation2.5.4.1.1 Apply the lubricant to one stud and four nuts ofeach material code listed in table 1. Wipe offexcess lubricant.2.5.4.1.2 Each test specimen shall be prepared by threadingfour nuts onto a

    36、 stud of the same material code.Torque the first nut against the second nut andtorque the third nut against the fourth nut. Torqueto achieve 10 l percent of the stud material yieldstrength.2.5.4.1.3 After positioning the nuts, wipe the ends of thestud and the side faces of two of the four nuts witha

    37、 cloth dampened with isopropyl alcohol to removeexcess lubricant. Ensure that the lubricant coversthe side faces of two remaining nuts.2.5.4.1.4 For each material code listed in table I, one testspecimen shall also be prepared without anylubricant applied to the stud and nut threads.2.5.4.2 Test Pro

    38、cedure2.5.4.2.1 Test specimens shall be placed into in a syntheticseawater solution in accordance with ASTM D 1141 at175F 5F for a total of 750 hours.A separate test solution shall be used for eachalloy group (as listed in table 1). In addition, aseparate test solution shall be used for theunlubrica

    39、ted control test specimen of each alloygroup.These tests shall be conducted in containers ofsimilar size and shape and the same quantity ofProvided by IHSNot for ResaleNo reproduction or networking permitted without license from IHS-,-,-A-A-59004A7solution shall be used in each of these tests. Testa

    40、ssembly should insure that each test specimen iselectrically isolated from other test specimens andmetallic materials.2.5.4.2.2 After each 250 hours of exposure, remove the testspecimens from the test solution and allow the testspecimens to dry before returning them to the testsolution.2.5.4.2.3 Whe

    41、n the test run is completed, the test specimensshall be removed from the solution and disassembled.2.5.4.2.4 The studs and nuts shall be cleaned using cleannylon bristle brushes and inspected at 2 OXmagnification. The amount of corrosive attack ordegradation on the lubricated fasteners shall be nogr

    42、eater than the amount of attack or degradation onthe unlubricated fasteners.2.5.5 Detailed recruirements for Corrosion Test 3.2.5.5.1 Specimen Preparation2.5.5.1.1 Prior to assembling the test specimens, each studshall be inspected by post- emulsifiable fluorescentliquid penetrant to identify any de

    43、fects on thethread surface. Studs showing any indications shallbe discarded and replaced.2.5.5.1.2 Apply the lubricant to four studs an d eight nuts ofeach material code in table 1. Wipe off excesslubricant.2.5.5.1.3 Place two lubricated studs and four lubricated nutsof each material code listed in

    44、Table I in a furnaceat 650F 25F for a sufficient time until thelubricant is dry to the touch.2.5.5.1.4 Prepare six test specimens for each material codelisted in table 1. The six test specimens for eachmaterial code shall consist of two sets of threedifferent types of specimens- one type prepared fr

    45、omlubricated studs and nuts, one type prepared fromlubricated studs and nuts which have been heated tovolatilize organic constituents, and one typeprepared using unlubricated studs and nuts. Inaddition, two test specimens shall be controls andshall be prepared using unlubricated studs and nuts.2.5.5

    46、.1.5 Each test specimen shall consist of a stud of eachmaterial loaded to 90 to 100 percent of the yieldProvided by IHSNot for ResaleNo reproduction or networking permitted without license from IHS-,-,-A-A-59004A8strength by torquing two nuts separated by a spacer.The spacer shall be fabricated from

    47、 a nut of eachmaterial listed in table 1. The ends of the studsextending beyond the nuts may be cut off afterpreparing the test specimen.2.5.5.2 Test Procedure2.5.5.2.1 One set of three test specimens and one unlubricatedcontrol test specimen of each material code shall beimmersed in a synthetic sea

    48、water solution inaccordance with ASTM D 1141. A separate testsolution shall be used for each alloy group (aslisted in table 1). In addition, a separate testsolution shall be used for the control testspecimens of each alloy group.2.5.5.2.2 The second set of three test specimens and oneunlubricated co

    49、ntrol test specimen of each materialcode shall be immersed in a distilled watersolution. A separate test solution shall be usedfor each alloy group (as listed in table 1). Inaddition, a separate test solution shall be used forthe control test specimens of each alloy group -2.5.5.2.3 Tests shall be conducted in containers of similarsize and shape and the same quantity of testsolution shall be used in each of these tests.2.5.5.2.4
