    5、 This specification applies to ball studs used in steering systems and similar applications requiring high strength and wear resistance (e.g., transmission control rod ball stud). 2.0 SCOPE Requirements for material, heat treatment, hardness, case depth, finish, and testing are included in this spec

    6、ification. 2.1 Restricted Chemical Substances Effective January 1, 2007, all product supplied to the requirements of this specification must comply with the requirements of the CEMS B-50 specification. 3.0 REFERENCE DOCUMENTS Unless otherwise specified, the latest issue of all referenced standards s

    7、hall apply. The following standards, specifications and regulations are referenced in this specification. Quality System Standard ISO 9001 or TS-16949 NAVISTAR CEMS G-1 NAVISTAR Manufacturing Standard MS-D-13 NAVISTAR CEMS B-50 CFR Title 29, Part 1910 4.0 REQUIREMENTS 4.1 Material and Heat Treatment

    8、 Ball studs shall be made from either of the following combinations of steel (leaded steels are permissible) and heat treatment: Option 1 - Any alloy steel (0.25% carbon max), carburized or carbonitrided on the ball surface. Temper at 200C (400F) min. Option 2 - Any steel (0.35 to 0.55% carbon, 0.60

    9、% min manganese, 0.04% max phosphorus, 0.05% max sulfur), induction or flame hardened on the ball surface. AUGUST 2011 Page 2 of 4 4.2 Hardness The ball surface (spherical diameter) shall have a minimum superficial Rockwell hardness of 88 HR15N (or 55 HRC min when converted). The center 1/3 of the ba

    11、ll diameter shall not exceed 35 HRC. 4.2.1 The remainder of the ball stud (neck, taper, flange, and threaded or riveted length) shall have a surface hardness of 22-35 HRC. Prior to induction or flame hardening, this hardness shall be obtained by quenching and tempering at 425C (800 F) min. This hard

    12、ness range shall extend from the minor diameter of the neck to at least 3 mm (1/8 in) on the ball side (measured in a direction perpendicular to the stud axis), to a maximum of 6 mm (1/4 in). See Figure 1 below. Figure 1 - Typical Hardening Pattern NOTE: Hardness on Surface A is optional. 4.2.2 For

    13、ball studs with a neck diameter of 22 mm (7/8 in) or larger, the hardening pattern may extend to the start of the taper or flange. If hardened in this manner, the pattern shall extend past the minor diameter of the neck by at least 6 mm (1/4 in). The surface hardness of the neck shall not exceed 62

    14、HRC. 4.3 Case Depth The effective case depth (i.e., to 50 HRC) on the finished ball surface shall be 0.25 mm (0.010 in) min whether obtained by carburizing, carbonitriding, or flame or induction hardening. 4.3.1 A case is not desired on the remainder of the ball stud as defined above. However, a cas

    15、e is permitted on the non-spherical portion providing it is tempered so that it meets the bend test requirements herein and the hardness requirements previously specified. In the case of riveted studs, the riveted end is to be tempered at 650C (1200F) min to permit peening of the end. 4.4 Finish Stu

    16、ds shall be surface treated after hardening as follows (unless otherwise specified on the drawing): Phosphate Coating (manganese phosphate), Class A-2, CEMS G-1 4.4.1 Electroplating of ball studs is not recommended. However, if ball studs are plated, they shall be suitably treated after plating to p

    17、rovide freedom from hydrogen embrittlement. AUGUST 2011 Page 3 of 4 4.5 Testing All studs with neck diameter less than 22 mm (7/8 in) shall exhibit a tough ductile structure and, when bent under an impact loading, shall permanently deform at the neck without cracking or fracture. 5.0 QUALITY All prod

    19、uct supplied shall be clean and free from dirt, oils, sharp edges, or defects harmful to product performance. 6.0 SOURCE APPROVAL AND QUALITY CONTROL 6.1 Supplier Requirements All suppliers to NAVISTAR are required to be registered to ISO 9001 Quality System Requirements. NAVISTAR will also accept T

    20、S-16949 registration as long as the supplier can also fulfill all AIAG PPAP (Production Part Approval Process) documentation and approval requirements. Suppliers must maintain their certification with an accredited registrar and must furnish copies of registration certificates to the Corporate Buyer

    21、 upon request. 6.2 Approval Parts supplied against contracts or purchase orders citing this specification shall be equivalent in all respects to those samples which were approved by the purchaser. No changes in formulation or processing practices are permitted without approval. In the event that cha

    22、nges in material, properties, processing practices, construction, color, or labeling of the product are required, the supplier shall notify Materials Engineering at Truck Development and Technology Center (TDTC) and Purchasing and Supplier Development of the proposed change(s). Test data indicating

    23、conformance to all requirements of this specification, test samples, and new or amended or updated Material Safety Data Sheet(s) (MSDS), in accordance with CFR Title 29, Part 1910, shall be submitted with the request for change. 6.3 Process Control The supplier shall either perform and report result

    24、s of tests on specific lots of parts produced using ISO 9001 or TS-16949 guidelines, or provide statistical evidence of the lot having been produced in a state of statistical control and with a process capable of providing all required properties. The part supplier and the plant metallurgist and/or

    25、the quality control manager of the using NAVISTAR plant may determine testing and reporting requirements on specific products. 7.0 SHIPPING, PACKING AND IDENTIFICATION Loading, packing and identification shall be in accordance with Manufacturing Std. MS-D-13. 8.0 DESIGNATION ON DRAWINGS Since the ma

    26、terials and heat treatments described in this specification are considered interchangeable, it is not necessary to select the method of manufacture. Therefore, the material designation shall read “TMS-1026“ with no reference to type of material, heat treatment, or finish. Or, if a particular materia
