Change Notice: Changed to New MPAPS format; Combined GS, GI, PP. 1.0 GENERAL: Implementation of this standard must be in accordance with the policies and procedures outlined on page MPAPS S-A-0.101. There may al

5、so be supplemental group instructions in regard to use of metric standards that should be taken into account. This standard may differ in some respects with certain segments of national standards. In recognition of these differences, the sizes and tolerance ranges used were established in an effort

6、to enable the use of commercially available items, dimensionally interchangeable worldwide. This standard establishes the dimensional and performance requirements of break mandrel blind rivets suitable for use in joining nonstructural component parts of an assembly. This specification contains the e

7、ssentials of the SAE Standard. A break mandrel blind rivet is a blind fastener with a self-contained mandrel which during the setting operation is pulled into or against the rivet body forming an upset on the blind end and expanding the body until the mandrel breaks. The inclusion of dimensional dat

10、5 by Navistar, Inc. JUNE 2015 Page 2 of 8 3.0 DESIGN CONSIDERATION: Installation of a regular rivet requires tooling access to both rivet ends. If access to only one end is possible, a blind rivet which utilizes an integral pull type mandrel to deform the blind end into a clinch may be used. Rivets

11、are best suited for joints that are loaded in shear. As they fill the hole, they will prevent chucking under transverse load but, compared to bolts or screws, rivets have lower strength. The following edge distance and spacing recommendations apply to all rivets. Break mandrel blind rivets are consi

12、dered non-structural. Consideration of material being joined, such as FRP or other relatively soft materials, especially in thin sections should be given. In addition, consideration of the compatibility of rivet materials with materials being joined should be given to avoid corrosion particularly in

13、 exterior applications. Note: In all cases, it is recommended that all completed assemblies be tested under service loads to verify the design. 4.0 METRIC-INCH RELATED SIZES: During the inch to metric design transition period, the following chart of related sizes can be used for reference. In lightly loaded structures where the rivet perform

15、s only a holding function, this can be decreased to 1-1/2 diameters, and in heavily loaded structures, it may be necessary to increase it to as much as 3 diameters to develop required joint strength. Rivet pitch should be three times the diameter of the rivet. Depending upon nature of load, it may b

16、e desirable to decrease or increase this distance. However, it is generally considered that 3 diameters overcome the tendency of the material to fail and concentrate the load on the rivet. Do not space farther than 24 x T of thinnest panel. NUMBER: MPAPS S-GM-90.101-GS/PL TITLE: Break Mandrel Blind

30、t of the actual mandrel break load (shown in table above) when tested in accordance with specified test methods. The blind head formation load is defined as a load applied to the mandrel sufficient to pull the mandrel head into the rivet body and initiate an expansion of the length of rivet body pro

When the formation of the blind side upset occurs there will normally be a period of tensile machine cross head travel with little or no increase in applied load. 12.2 Mandrel Break Load: While the rivet is being set, the axially applied loa

(See Figure 1 on page 5.) 12.4 Mandrel Break Location: When the rivet is installed using the minimum thickness specified in the appropriate grip range, and the recommended hole size on page 6, the mandrel will not protrude above the top surface

34、 of the rivet head after installation. 12.5 Mandrel Push-Out Load: After the rivet has been installed in a joint thickness equal to the maximum specified grip range, the axial load required to push the remaining portion of the mandrel out of the rivet body will be greater than 22N. 12.6 Shear and Te

35、nsile Load: After the rivet has been installed, the transverse load (single shear) and axial load required to fail the assembly (separation of parts) will exceed the appropriate load shown in the Table on page 2, when tested in accordance with the specified test methods. 13.0 TEST METHODS: 13.1 Blin

36、d Head Formation and Mandrel Break Tests: The test rivet will be installed in the fixture of a tensile testing machine (see Figure 2 on page 5). The test plate(s) may be of any material capable of supporting the test load without permanent deformation. The combined thickness of test plate(s) will be

The hole in the test plate (s) will conform to the recommended hole size given for the rivet size on page 6. The restraining plate will be alloy steel, quenched and tempered to a

39、hardness of Rockwell C42 to 46. The hole in the plate will be mandrel diameter +.25 mm. A load will be applied axially to the mandrel at a rate of 127 mm per minute or less. The load at which it is visually observed that the rivet body end is upset or otherwise deformed to form a head on the blind s
