、ns (MPAPS) NUMBER: MPAPS F-1058 Former Designation: TMS-1058 editorial changes 1.0 APPLICATION This specification covers steel tubing used in coolant (HVAC), heater, oil fill, charge air systems, and other similar systems, with formed, beaded, or straight ends with fittings. NOTES: - Refer to TMS-10

、59 for aluminum tubing used in coolant, air and CAC systems. - This spec no longer covers exhaust tubing design; refer to MPAPS F-1069 for exhaust tubing requirements. - Coolant hose end form designs are covered by MPAPS F-1. - The use of zinc plated tubing in coolant systems is not allowed, unless

、prior approval from Engineering is given. In certain applications where zinc plating (MPAPS G-20) may be desired and approved, it will be supplied with trivalent chromium passivation (or other hex-chrome free passivation). Refer to MPAPS G-20 for options. 2.0 SCOPE This specification covers construc

OCTOBER 2015 Page 2 of 21 4.0 GENERAL REQUIREMENTS 4.1 Welding Welding requirements using standard welding symbols will be specified on the engineering drawing, and will be consistent with the applicable American Welding Society

、(AWS) or Navistar welding standard (e.g., AWS D1.1 for steel, AWS D1.6 for stainless steel, MPAPS P-9516 for spot welding, etc.), unless otherwise specified. Weld symbols shown on engineering drawings shall be in accordance with ANSI/AWS A2.4. Sizes of fillet/groove welds shown on the engineering dr

、awing are minimum values. When brazing is specified on the drawing (e.g., for attaching end fittings), welding may not be substituted without prior approval from Engineering. 4.1.1 External weld seams on aluminized tubing shall be metalized with an aluminum coating. The thickness of the remetalized

、layer should be equivalent to the thickness of the aluminum coating on the base metal to provide equivalent corrosion resistance. The minimum thickness of the remetalized layer shall be 0.00025 inch as measured microscopically on cross sections taken perpendicular to the weld seam. Other methods of

、measurement of the metalized layer may be used by agreement. 4.1.2 Welds on fabricated tube shall be continuous with a minimum of weld spatter. No weld spatter is permitted on flange sealing surfaces. 4.1.2.1 Aluminized tubing: All weld areas on fabricated aluminized tubing, as well as uncoated atta

、chments, shall be painted with an aluminum-colored paint after welding. If parts will be exposed to higher temperatures, aluminum-colored paint shall conform to TMS-9015 Type I. 4.1.2.2 Leakage: Welds on fabricated pipes/tubing shall show no leakage when pressure-tested at 25 psi (min) pressure. 4.2

、 Workmanship Unless otherwise specified, end points are to be maintained within 0.25 inch of the basic location. Intermediate points shall be located within 0.25 inch. Straightness shall be within 0.25 inch. Ends shall be free of burrs. Bend radii to be within 0.25 inch See Figure 3. 4.2.1 Dimension

、al Tolerances: Unless otherwise specified, the dimensional tolerances shown in Figures 1 through 15 of this specification shall apply, and the standard dimensional tolerances shown in the title block of the Navistar Engineering drawing are not applicable. Dimensioning and tolerancing shown in these

、figures is in accordance with ASME Y14.5M-1994. Cylindricity of tubing shall not exceed 1.5% of the nominal tube diameter. For parts specified to have tube ends sized, cylindricity at the ends shall be within the indicated diameter tolerance as shown in Figure 5B. 4.2.2 Wrinkles in or adjacent to be

、nds shall not exceed 0.040 inch depth. 4.2.3 Reduction of the OD in bend areas shall conform to limits shown in chart #1 and Fig. 3. 4.2.4 Part Marking Requirement Unless otherwise specified on the engineering drawing and/or purchase order, tube assemblies shall be marked for identification with the

、 Navistar assembly part number. Text height is to be 0.18-inch minimum. 4.3 Construction Engineering design (RPO) is generally based upon single piece construction, rather than cut and weld construction. The welding process adds extra cost and introduces distortion, which reduces the consistency and

、 accuracy of alignment at the tube ends. Unless

、otherwise specified, Type I coolant pipes shall be phosphate coated, Class Z-1, per MPAPS G-1. Option: The use of aluminized steel (Type II tubing) is an acceptable alternative to phosphate coating. 4.4.2 Type II 1008/1010, 20 ksi min yield strength, welded steel tube, Grade HF as per MPAPS A-10, Pa

、rt I; Aluminized Grade 1A, Class T1-75 or T1-120, per MPAPS A-6, Part II (Similar to Type 1-AWAC, as per ASTM A 787) Note: Type II tubing is not recommended for applications requiring brazed attachments (such as end fittings). 4.4.3 Type III Obsolete - shown for reference only - Use Type I 4.4.4 Typ

Note: Type VII tubing not recommended for new design. Type II shall not be substituted for Type VII when Type VII is specified on the Engineering Drawing.)

、4.5 Tubing Wall Thickness Tubing wall thickness shall be shown on the engineering drawing. On existing drawings where thickness is not specified, the wall thickness shall be 0.065 inch (1.65 mm) for all sizes and types. 4.5.1 Option: On existing Engineering drawings for tubes under 2 inches OD with

、specified wall thickness of 0.028 in. (0.71 mm), 0.035 in. (0.89 mm), or 0.049 in. (1.25 mm), the use of a heavier wall thickness up to and including 0.065 inch (1.65 mm) is acceptable. 33、uct supplied to the requirements of this specification shall be free of rust, stains, oil, dirt, metal chips, grease, weld spatter, etc., and shall be clean and dry to the touch. 5.1 Cleanliness of CAC, Coolant, and Radiator Pipes CAC, coolant, and radiator pipes should be clean when installed on th

、e vehicle, to avoid introducing dirt or other contaminants into the engine cooling or air systems. To assure that sufficient cleaning has been performed to provide the required level of cleanliness, a specific test method, describing maximum amount (weight) of debris and maximum allowable particle s

、izes, may be established as a requirement for the CAC pipes by specifying on the drawing, “Cleanliness per MPAPS F-2.” After the required cleaning operation has been performed by the pipe/tube supplier, it is essential that the pipes be protected from any re-contamination in transit and/or storage.

、This protection may be achieved by capping the ends of the pipes, or otherwise protecting them from contamination in transit and storage. CAC pipes provided for Service Parts are generally required to be individually end-capped. 5.2 KCC - Key Control Characteristics - General Application One KCC val

、ue (minimum) should be designated on each new drawing released by Engineering in accordance with provisions of Engineering Design Standard A-16. Engineering should consult with the supplier to assure selection of appropriate KCC values prior to release of the Engineering drawing. KCC values shall be

、 incorporated in the Quality Control Plan for each part as features for which management by statistical process control is mandatory. 5.2.1 KCC Requirements Applicable to Radiator and CAC Pipes Engineering has designated specific dimensions as KCC features for all radiator (water) and charge air coo

、ler (CAC) pipes. Unless specific exception is noted on the engineering drawing and/or purchase order, the following characteristics are designated as KCC features: 1. O.D. of the pipe within 1.5 inches of the pipe ends. 2. Height of the sealing bead. 6.0 SOURCE APPROVAL AND QUALITY CONTROL 6.1 Suppl

、ier Requirements All suppliers to NAVISTAR are required to be registered to ISO 9001 Quality System Requirements.
