、al wisdom says trees are good for the environment. They absorb carbon dioxidea greenhouse gasfrom the atmosphere and store it as carbon while releasing oxygen, a process for which forests have been called “the lungs of the planet“. The roots of trees have been thought to trap sediments and nutrients

、 in the soil. Trees have also been credited with steadying the flow of these rivers, keeping it relatively constant through wet and dry seasons, thus preventing both drought and flooding. It is all nonsense, concludes a research published this week. A four-year international study led by researchers

、 at the University of Newcastle, in Britain, and the Free University of Amsterdam, identifies several myths about the link between forests and water. For example, in arid and semiarid areas, trees consume far more water than they trap. And it is not the trees that catch sediments and nutrients, and

、steady the flow of the rivers, but the fact that the soil has not been compressed. The World Commission on Water estimates that the demand for water will increase by around 50% in the next 30 years. Moreover, around 4 billion peopleone half of the worlds populationwill live in conditions of severe wa

、ter stress, meaning they will not have enough water for drinking and washing to stay healthy, by 2025.The government of South Africa has been taking a tough approach to trees since it became the first to treat water as a basic human right in 1998. Trees lose water through evaporation (the technical

、term is transpiration) at twice the rate of grassland or South Africas unique fynbos scrubland. In a scheme praised by the hydrologists, the state penalizes forestry companies for preventing this water from reaching rivers and underground aquifers. In India, large tree-planting schemes not only lose

、valuable water but complicate the true problem identified by the hydrologists; the unregulated removal of water from aquifers to irrigate crops. Fanners need no permit to drill a borehole and, as most farmers receive free electricity, there is little economic control on the volume of water pumped. I

Many trees have been planted and in fact these trees complicate the existing problem.Section A45 Youd imagine that asking people to rate themselves on a ten

、 point scale in response to the question “In general, how happy or unhappy do you usually feel?“ would only lead to wild inaccuracies.【46】But when scientists compare such basic measures to a full-blown psychological assessment, the results are fairly consistent. It would seem we re rather good judge

、s of our happiness, and this fact has allowed the use of simple questionnaires and interviews to survey more than a million people across many nations.【47】Its also quite clear that happiness isnt just some whimsical concept dreamt up in the 1960s by the hippies and advertising agencies. Richard Davi

、dson at Wisconsin University monitored electrical activity in the brain to show how a highly attractive photograph causes a particular portion of our left hemisphere to illuminate, while a horrific photo stimulates our right side. Indeed, people prone in general to more of this left-portion activity

、 tend to score higher on all counts of good mood, whereas right-siders are decidedly gloomy. The same is true for new-born babies.【48】Whats more, it seems likely that around 50 per cent of our characteristic level of happiness is an inherited factor. This can be estimated because in 1996, Lykken and

、 Tellegen at Minnesota University compared 663 pairs of identical twins. A further 69 pairs were identical twins who had been reared apart, yet these twins still showed at least a 50 per cent similarity in their self-reported happiness, a far higher percentage than the non-identical twins. And theres little if any difference between male an

、d female average self-ratings, though women are more prone to intense swings. The bottom line is, life feeling good pays no heed to age, IQ or gender. Its open to all-comers.Trouble is, we dont always know how to generate wholesome, renewable happiness, and sometimes our default response is to reach for the quick-fix, in one form or anot
