、terference problems between tapping sleeves and tapping valves through the use of a positioning recess and mating raised face of the connecting flanges between tapping sleeves and tapping valves. The recess and raised face serve to ensure proper alignment of the tapping valve onto the tapping sleeve
、 but do not affect the strength or the tightness of the joint. 1. SCOPE 1.1 This Standard Practice establishes flange and gasket dimensions which define the interface between tapping sleeves and tapping valves. 1.2 This Standard Practice establishes dimensions for these special connecting flanges an
、d gaskets of nominal sizes from NPS 2 through NPS 60 (DN 50 through DN 1500) for water and sewerage systems. 1.3 This Standard Practice establishes pressure-temperature ratings for the connecting flanges. 2. DEFINITIONS (Reference Figure 1 Illustration) 2.1 Joint The “interface” or connecting joint
、between sleeves and tapping valves will be abbreviated as “joint” in this Standard Practice. 2.2 Main A pipe used in a water or sewerage system for distribution of water or collection of sewage. 2.3 Manufacturer The party producing products in accordance with this Standard Practice. 2.4 NPS Indicate
、s “Nominal Pipe Size” (U.S. customary). A standard size identification number, not necessarily an actual dimension. The European or International designation equivalent to NPS is called DN (diametre nominal/nominal diameter) in which sizes are based on SI (metric) units. Guidelines for SI (metric) d
、ata may be found in MSS SP-86. 2.5 Purchaser The party entering into a contract or agreement to purchase products manufactured in accordance with this Standard Practice. 2.6 Tapping Machine (also known as a drilling machine) A machine used to cut a hole into an existing pressurized or non-pressurize
、d main through the use of a tapping sleeve and a tapping valve. The tapping machine is equipped with a cutter, which extends through the waterway of the tapping valve and sleeve branch to cut the hole into the main and remove the cut-out piece (coupon) upon retraction of the cutter. The tapping valv
、e can then be closed to seal the branch connection while the tapping machine is removed from the valve and the branch pipeline is connected to the tapping valve. 2.7 Tapping Sleeve A fitting that can be assembled onto an existing main to make a branch or “tee” connection to the main with a tapping v
、alve and tapping machine, without interruption of service. Tapping sleeves can be referenced in MSS SP-111 (Gray-Iron and Ductile-Iron) and MSS SP-124 (fabricated). MSS STANDARD PRACTICE SP-602 2.8 Tapping Valve A gate valve with special end connections that are designed to provide proper alignment
、of a tapping sleeve, the tapping valve, and tapping machine, so that the tapping machine cutter will pass through the tapping valve and tapping sleeve branch with clearance during the tapping operation. A tapping valve is also specially designed so that its gate opens sufficiently to provide clearan
、ce for the tapping cutter to pass through the open valve during the tapping operation, and so that there is sufficient distance between the gate and the valves connection with the tapping machine to provide clearance between the gate and the pilot drill and cutter at the conclusion of the tapping op
、eration, when the cutter is withdrawn and the tapping valve is closed. 2.9 Other definitions may be found in MSS SP-96. FIGURE 1 Tapping Components (For Illustration Only) MSS STANDARD PRACTICE SP-603 3. PRESSURE-TEMPERATURE RATING Flange ratings of tapping sleeves and tapping valves covered by this
、 Standard Practice shall be limited to, as applicable, the pressure-temperature rating shown in ASME B16.1, Class 125, or the pressure ratings of AWWA C110/A21.10, or AWWA C111/A21.11. 4. FLANGE DIMENSIONS 4.1 The flange of the tapping sleeve and the flange of the tapping valve, which form the conne
、cting joint, shall be in accordance with the dimensions in Tables 1 and 2, respectively. Dimensions are provided for two types of tapping sleeve/valve connections, Type “M“ and Type “U“. 4.2 Flange diameter and bolt hole dimensions(a)shall be in accordance with the requirements of ASME B16.1, Class
、125, or AWWA C110/A21.10. 4.3 See MSS SP-113 for dimensions that define the connecting flange joint between tapping machine and tapping valve, in sizes from NPS 2 through NPS 60 (DN 50 through DN 1500). 5. FLANGE ALIGNMENT 5.1 The end flange of the tapping valve which forms a joint with the tapping
、sleeve must be parallel to and concentric with the opposite flange and concentric with the waterway to provide proper alignment for the tapping operation. 5.2 The raised face of the tapping valve and recess of the tapping sleeve must be concentric with the bolt hole pattern of their respective flang
、es to provide proper alignment between the tapping valve and tapping sleeve. 6. FLANGE GASKET 6.1 The flange gasket used between the tapping sleeve and tapping valve must have an inside diameter large enough to fit over the raised lip of the tapping valve. 6.2 A ring type or full face gasket with a
、special inside diameter may be used; however, it should be noted that a full-face gasket may require higher bolt torque for sealing. NOTE: (a) The flange diameters and bolt hole dimensions of ASME and AWWA flanges are identical in the equivalent sizes. MSS STANDARD PRACTICE SP-604 TABLE 1 Recess in
