    4、: Replaced “International Truck and Engine Corporation” with “Navistar, Inc.” per corporate directive. 1.0 SCOPE This is a method for determining the degree to which a primer affects the glossiness of a subsequent top coat of paint. 2.0 APPARATUS 2.1 Tack rag 2.2 20 degree glossmeter, Gardner or equ

    5、ivalent 3.0 MATERIAL 3.1 Q-Panels Type S, 100 x 300 mm (4x 12 inches), available from the Q-Panel Company, 156010 Industrial Parkway, Cleveland, Ohio 44135 Or Fiber glass reinforced plastic panels available from Materials Engineering, International Truck and Engine Corporation, P.O. Box 1109, Fort W

    6、ayne, Indiana 46801-1109 3.2 Masking tape, 75mm (3 inches) wide 3.3 No. 360 sandpaper 4.0 PROCEDURE 4.1 Using masking tape as shown in Figure at right, cover the central portion of each of the following quantities and types of panels for the grade of paint being tested. 4.1.1 Two Q-Panels Grades 50,

    7、 -55, -55W, and 56 4.1.2 Four Q-Panels Grades 53 and 53 A 4.1.3 Two fiber glass reinforced plastic panels Grades 52 and 52 HS 4.2 Prepare the panels according to the procedure specified for the applicable grade in Test Method GT-13, Panel Preparation, proceeding up to but not including the step in w

    8、hich the primed and dried panels are sanded. For Grades 53 and -53A where four panels are prepared, two alternative drying procedures, and air dry and an oven dry, are specified. For these grades, two panels will be dried according to the oven drying procedure. For the remaining grades, only one dry

    9、ing procedure is specified; in these cases, both panels will be dried according to this procedure. 4.3 Age the prepared panels for 24 hours in air 21 to 27 C (70 to 80 F). AUGUST 2009 Page 2 of 2 4.4 Wet sand the primed and dried portion to the right of the masked section of each panel with No. 360 sandpaper. 4.5 Remove the masking tape from all panels and wipe with the tack rag. 4.6 Complete the remaining steps outlined under Panel Pr

    12、eparation commencing with the step following the one in which the primed and dried panels are sanded. Use an enamel which is normally employed with that grade of primer; for example, 0001-17 over Grades 53 and -53A primer or 2303-18 over Grade 56. For Grades 52 and 52HS, topcoat the ground side of a

    13、n unprimed Q-Panel and the two fiber glass reinforced plastic panels with a suitable enamel. 4.7 Using the 20 degree glossmeter, determine the gloss reading of the enamel on the unprimed (masked) portion of each panel. For Grades 52 and 52HS, this reading will be taken on the unprimed and enameled Q

    14、-Panel prepared in step (6). Record this as value A. 4.8 Determine the 20 degree gloss reading of the enamel on the unsanded portion of each primed panel. Record this as value B. 4.9 Determine the 20 degree gloss reading of the enamel on the sanded portion of each primed panel. Record this as value

    15、C. 4.10 For Grades 52 and 52HS, examine both plastic panels with the unaided eye for evidence of fiber pattern. 5.0 CALCULATIONS 5.1 Calculate the percent holdout of the unsanded primer for each of the panels: Percent holdout of unsanded primer = B x 100 A 5.2 Calculate the percent holdout of the sa

    16、nded primer for each of the panels: Percent holdout of unsanded primer = C x 100 A 5.3 Calculate the difference between the percent holdout of the sanded and unsanded primer. 6.0 REPORT Report the following information: 6.1 The minimum percent holdout of unsanded primer calculated from all the panel

    17、s. 6.2 The minimum percent holdout of sanded primer calculated from all the panels. 6.3 The maximum difference between the percent holdout of the sanded and unsanded primer calculated from all the panels. 6.4 For Grades 52 and 52HS, report any evidence of fiber pattern.
