、sed in the field, on job sites, or in the laboratory. When used in the field or on job sites the specimen to be tested is the coated part or article on which the adhesion is to be evaluated. When used in the laboratory the specimens generally consist of specially prepared test panels. 3.0 PREPARATIO

、N - FIELD TEST The surface to be tested should be clean and dry and the test should be performed only on fully cured paint films in which the paint film and substrate have been allowed to cool to room temperature, 15-35C (55-90F). Extremes in temperature or relative humidity may affect the adhesion

、 4 4.3 Prepare the appropriate quantity and type of panels for the grade of paint being tested according to the procedure specified in Test Method GT-13, Panel Preparation. For Grades -50, -50T, -52, -52W and -53, proceed up to but not including the step in which the primed and dried panels are sand

、ed. 4.3.1 Two steel panels - Grades -17, -17HS, -18, -19, -19HS, -29, -29HS, -29T, -29THS, -32, -32HS, -32HS/Ur, -50, -54, -55, -55W, -62 -81HS, -81W, -82W, AND -83W. 4.3.2 Four steel panels - Grades -33, -53, and -53A. 4.3.3 Four FRP panels - Grades -52, -52HS, and -52W. For grades where four panel

、s are prepared (except Grades -52 and -52HS), two alternative drying procedures, an air dry and an oven dry, are specified. For these grades, two panels will be dried according to the air drying procedure and the remaining two panels will be dried according to the oven drying procedure. For grades w

、here two panels are prepared, only one drying procedure is specified; for these grades, both panels will be dried according to this procedure. For Grades -52 and -52HS, four panels are prepared, two with a sanded substrate and two with an unsanded substrate, for each alternate drying procedure. 4.4

、Age the prepared panels for 72 hours in a recirculating oven at 49 + 3C (120 + 5F), remove and cool to 21 to 27C (70 to 80F). 5.0 PROCEDURE 5.1 On each part or panel select an area free of blemishes and minor surface imperfections and crosshatch an area of approximately 400 mm2 (0.75 square in.) by

、cutting through the paint film with a new razor blade making parallel and perpendicular cuts/incisions as follows: 5.1.1 For coatings having a dry film thickness less than 50m (2.0 mils) space the cuts 1 mm (0.040 in.) apart and make eleven (11) cuts 5.1.2 For coatings having a dry film thickness of

、 50 m (2.0 mils)or greater space the cuts 2 mm (0.080 in.) apart and make six (6) cuts. 5.1.3 Make all cuts approximately 20 mm (0.75 in.) long. Cut through the paint film to the substrate in one steady motion using sufficient pressure on the cutting tool to insure the cutting edge penetrates to the

、 substrate. When making single cuts with the aid of a straight edge place the guide on the uncut area of the paint film. 5.1.4 After making the required number of cuts brush the film lightly with a soft brush or tissue to remove any paint flakes or ribbons of coating. 5.1.5 Examine the cutting edge

、to insure sharpness and replace as necessary. Make the additional cuts at 90 (perpendicular) to and centered on the original cuts. 5.1.6 Brush/clean the area as before and examine the incisions to insure the cuts have penetrated to the substrate. If the substrate has not been reached make a new grid

、 pattern in another location. Do not attempt to deepen a previous cut as this may affect the adhesion along the incision. 5.2 Remove two complete laps of tape and discard. Remove an additional piece of tape and cut a length approximately 75 mm (3 in.) long. 5.3 Press the tape firmly onto the crossha

、tched area and rub the tape to ensure good contact and removal of air bubbles. 5.4 Within 90 30 sec of application of the tape remove the tape with a sharp upward motion in a direction 90 to the surface.
