    4、: Replaced “International Truck and Engine Corporation” with “Navistar, Inc.” per corporate directive. 1.0 SCOPE This is a method for determining the hardness of a dry film of paint. 2.0 APPARATUS 2.1 Recirculating oven capable of maintaining a temperature of 50 + 2 C (120 + 5 F). 2.2 Leads ranging

    5、in hardness from 5B to 6H and lead holder. Eagle-Turquoise, or equivalent. 3.0 MATERIAL 3.1 Bonderite CD-10 or Bonderite 958 zinc phosphated steel panels, 100 x 150 mm (4x6 inches), available from Advanced Coatings Technologies Inc., P.O. Box 401, 273 Industrial Drive, Hillsdale, Michigan 49242: Tel

    6、ephone No. (517) 439-1485. OR Fiber glass reinforced plastic panels available from Truck Development and Technology Center, Materials Engineering, P.O. box 1109, Ft. Wayne, Indiana, 46801-1109: Telephone No. (219) 461-1244. 3.2 No. 1 emery paper. 4.0 PROCEDURE 4.1 Prepare the appropriate quantity an

    7、d type of panels for the grade of paint being tested according to the procedure specified in Test Method GT-13, Panel Preparation. For Grades 50, -52, -52W,-52HS, -53, -53A, and 56, proceed up to but not including the step in which the primed and dried panels are sanded. 4.1.1 Two steel panels Grade

    8、s 17, -17HS, -18, -19, -19HS, -29, -29HS, -29T, -29THS, -32, -32HS, -32HS/Ur, -41, -43 50, -54, -55, -55W, -56, -62, -81, -81HS, -81W, -82W, and -83W. 4.1.2 Four steel panels Grades 53 and 53A. 4.1.3 Two fiber glass reinforced plastic panels Grade 52, -52HS, or 52W. AUGUST 2009 Page 2 of 2 For grades where four panels are prepared, two alternative drying procedures, an air dry and an oven dry, are specified. For these grades, two pan

    11、els will be dried according to the air drying panels will be dried according to the oven drying procedure. For grades where two panels are prepared, only one drying procedure is specified for these grades, both panels will be dried according to this procedure. 4.2 For Grades 17, -17HS, -18, -19, -19

    12、HS, catalyzed 19 and 19HS, -19, -29HS, -29T, and -29ThS, test the hardness immediately after the panels have been prepared. For all other grades, age the prepared panels for 72 hours in a recirculating oven at 50 + 2 C (120 +5 F), remove and cool to 21 to 27 C(70 to 80 F) prior to testing. 4.3 Squar

    13、e off the hardest (6H) pencil on No. 1 emery paper and insert into a lead holder so that no more than 5 mm (0.2 inch) of lead projects beyond the end of the holder. 4.4 Place the lead in contact with the painted surface and at a 45 degree angle to it. Push the holder firmly forward inch with approxi

    14、mately equal downward and forward pressure. 4.5 Examine the panel with the unaided eye to determine if the lead has cut through the paint film to either bare metal or a previous layer of paint for a distance of at least 1/8 inch. If the lead has not cut the paint, then record the hardness of the pai

    15、nt as 6H: it has, repeat steps (3), (4) and (5) using the next softer lead, 5H. 4.6 Proceed through the following sequence of successively softer leads until a lead that does not cut the paint is found: 6H, 5H, 4H, 3H, 2H, H, F, HB, B, 2B, 3B, 4B, 5B. 4.7 Record the hardness of the paint for each of

    16、 the panels. For those grades where two panels are prepared, both will be tested. For those grades where four panels are prepared, both air dried and both oven baked panels will be tested. 5.0 REPORT Report the minimum hardness value obtained from all the panels tested.
