、 DESIGNATION Chrome coatings for standard parts are classified by their thickness. 6.0 GENERAL REQUIREMENTS * The use of a copper layer beneath the nickel is optional. Copper is not to be substituted for nickel in the minimum requirements for the nickel layer. The total plating thickness is obtained

、 by the use of copper or additional nickel (when necessary). * Significant surfaces will be defiied as those surfaces which are visible and subject to wear or corrosion or both, or surfaces on which the coating is otherwise functionally necessary. Generally, it may be defined as those parts of the v

、isible surface that can be touched with a .75 inch (19 mm) ball on the product; however, all surfaces will be visibly coated. 6.1 Pre-Plated Surface: The articles to be plated will be thoroughly cleaned and free from rust, scale, oil and other foreign matter detrimental to the final finish. The surf

、ace will have a sufficiently fine texture to assure the desired fiial plating quality. The cleaning operation will be controlled to prevent hydrogen embrittlement, especially in those parts that are hardened, cold worked or subject to high service stresses. See ”Appendix - General Information”. 6.2

、Thickness - The thickness of plating is shown in General Requirements table above. Measurements will be made on significant surfaces.* This document is restricted and may not be sent outside International Truck and Engine Corporation or reproduced without permission from Corporate Technical Standard

、IHS-,-,-NUMBER: CEMS G-19, Pt. 111 PART III 6.2.1 The test for thickness of coatings on threaded fasteners such as bolts, nuts, screws, etc., will be made on the shank or other smooth surfaces as nearly adjacent to the thread as practicable. 6.2.2 Special requirements for chromium or nickel platings

、 used on ANSI Class 2A externally threaded fasteners 6.2.2.1 Class 3 is required for ANSI Class 2A threads on steel or brass fasteners having 28 threads per inch and finer. Maximum plating thickness permitted is .O003 inch (8 pm). 6.2.2.2 Class 5 is required for ANSI Class 2A threads on steel fasten

、ers having 24 to 13 threads per inch. Class 5 is also required for ANSI Class 2A threaded brass fasteners having 24 threads per inch and coarser. Maximum plating thickness permitted is .O004 inch (10 pm). 6.2.2.3 Class 8 is required for ANSI Class 2A threads on steel fasteners having 12 threads per

、inch and coarser. Maximum plating thickness permitted is .O006 inch (15 pm). 6.3 Corrosion Base metal corrosion will not exceed one spot per square inch (6.5 pm2) of significant surface and such spots that are visible to the unaided eye and will not exceed 0.06 inch (1.5 pm) in any dimension. 6.3.1

、Salt spray requirements do not apply to internal threads except by agreement between supplier and purchaser. TITLE: CURRENT ISSUE DATE: Nickel-Nickel/Chromium-Chromium Plating April 2002 7.0 QUALITY The chromium coating will have a bright reflective finish unless otherwise specified, or in accordanc

、e with samples submitted. The plating will be smooth, dense and uniform and substantially free from defects, such as blisters, cracks, stains or foreign matter, that may affect the appearance or protective value of the coatings. 8.0 METHODS OF TEST 8.1 Thickness Determine by microscopic examination

、of cross section according to ASTM B 487. Chromium may be determined by the drop test method described in ASTM B 555. Magnetic or eddy current methods if applicable, may be used when agreed upon by purchaser and supplier. 8.2 Neutral Salt Spray Test This test will be conducted according to ASTM B 11

、7. 9.0 SOURCE APPROVAL AND QUALITY CONTROL 9.1 Supplier Requirements Suppliers must conform to the requirements of the International IQR Quality Standard which includes conformance to the QS-9000 (IS0 9001) Quality System Standard. TITLE: CURRENT ISSUE DATE: Nickel-Nickel/Chromium-Chromium Plating April 2002 9.3 Process Control The supplier shall either perform and

、report results of tests on specific lots of parts produced or provide statistical evidence of the lot having been produced in a state of statistical control and with a process capable of providing all required properties. The part supplier and the plant metallurgist and/or the quality control manage

、r of the using International plant may determine testing and reporting requirements on specific products. 10.0 DESIGNATION ON DRAWINGS AND PURCHASE ORDERS The designation of coating types and classes for standard parts is described in the International Engineering Standard Parts Books. 10.1 For part

、s that are not included in the Engineering Standard Parts Book, The electroplated coating will be designated on drawings and purchase orders as follows: Examples: Dull Chromium, Class SCRD, CEMS G-19, Part III Bright Nickel, Class SNIB, CEMS G-19, Part III 10.2 If the part to be plated is considered

、 susceptible to failure because of hydrogen embrittlement, the drawing should specify “must be free from hydrogen embrittlement”. This is intended to serve as a warning to the plater that the method of cleaning and the baking time and temperature should be carefully considered and controlled. In som

、e applications of industrial plating, it may be desirable to bake both before and after plating. 11.0 SHIPPING AND PACKING Shipping, packing and identification shall be in accordance with Manufacturing Standard D-13. CURRENT ISSUE DATE: April 2002 A.5 CORROSION TESTING Th

、e neutral salt spray test has generally been discredited as a satisfactory corrosion test for decorative nickel/chromium plating. It is satisfactory for determining the porosity of chromium on steel, however, the MN-Porotest paper or the Ferroxyl test are quicker and equally accurate. A.6 HYDROGEN E

、MBRITTLEMENT Hydrogen embrittlement is a term used to describe the phenomenon that OCCUTS due to absorption of atomic or protonic hydrogen during processing. This causes either a loss in load carrying ability or a reduced capacity for slow plastic strain. Constant load ”delayed fracture” tests are a

、 sensitive means of quantifying the effect. Minute amounts of hydrogen can have significant effects. There is no universal agreement on the mechanism involved. Contrary to the usual effect of embrittlement, effects of hydrogen decrease with increasing strain rate. The phenomenon is most pronounced a

、t intermediate temperatures, but is less apparent at high and low temperatures. A.6.1 The only practical way to remove absorbed hydrogen is to heat the plated parts at a temperature sufficiently high and for a period of time sufficiently long to remove the hydrogen. The time and temperature depend o

、n the metal involved, its size, its metallurgical history and the quantity of hydrogen absorbed. The higher the strength of the steel, the more severe is the effect of the hydrogen embrittlement . A.6.2 A temperature of 400F (205C) for 4 hours has been found suitable in some instances; however, high

、er temperature and/or longer time may be found necessary. Hardened parts which have been tempered at less than 350F (175C) should be heated at 300F (150C) for at least 8 hours. Suitable relief of hydrogen embrittlement of highly stressed spring steel parts is considered doubtful. A.6.3 Hydrogen can

、be introduced during cleaning as well as during plating. Therefore, care must be used in selecting the method of cleaning so that hydrogen will not be absorbed by the parts prior to plating. Use of shot peening or grit blasting instead of acid cleaning will eliminate the absorption of hydrogen durin

、g the cleaning operation.
