、on This method is used to determine the corrosive and adhesive effects of gasket materials on metal surfaces. Apparatus Required Mechanical Convection Oven Capable of maintaining temperatures of 120 - 150 +/- 2 C. Humidity Cabinet The humidity cabinet must be maintained at 38 +/- 2 C and 95 to 100 %

、 R.H. The moist air must be circulated in the cabinet by a fan or other suitable means. Test specimens must be suitably supported and arranged in the test cabinet so that no water can drip from one specimen onto another. Materials Required Tension Wrench Indicating applied torque graduated to includ

、. Conditioning and Test Conditions All test values indicated herein are based on material conditioned in a controlled atmosphere of 23 +/- 2 C and 50 +/- 5 % relative humidity for not less than 24 h prior to testing and tested under the same conditions unless otherwise specified. Procedure Preparati

、on of Test 1. Prepare 3 specimens of gasket material for each test. They shall be cut clearly and shall be free from burrs, loose fibers, and dirt. No foreign substances shall be used during the cutting operation for lubrication of the die or any other purpose where they may come in contact with the

、 specimen. Specimens shall be cut with a 14 mm ID and a 40 mm OD die. 2. Wash the metal plates (A and B) with toluene to remove any traces of oil, grease, or other foreign substance. 3. Handle the plates with forceps after cleaning until the time of assembly. FORD LABORATORY TEST METHOD BV 123-01 Pa

、ge 3 of 5 Copyright 2000, Ford Global Technologies, Inc. Test Procedure The following metal plate combinations are to be tested: Aluminum (Plate A) and Aluminum (Plate A) Cast Iron (Plate B) and Cast Iron (Plate B) Aluminum (Plate A) and Cast Iron (Plate B) 1. Assemble the Plates A and/or B with gas

、ket test specimen, ground surface next to the test specimen, and Plates C on the top and the bottom to form a sandwich with the test specimen carefully centered between the Plates A and/or B (see Figure 1). 2. Lubricate the threads of screw very lightly using molybdenum disulfide in powder or spray

、form (oil is not recommended). 3. Carefully insert the screw through the washer, the Plates including the test specimen, and the washer (also lubricated) on the top. Take care to avoid contamination of either the gasket material or Plates (A and/or B) surface with the lubricant (see Figure 1). 4. Ti

、ghten the nut uniformly over a period of 10 s to a torque of 80 +/- 4 N-m or as specified by the relevant Engineering Materials Specification. 5. Place the assemblies in the mechanical convection oven for 70 h at 120 +/-2 C or 150 +/- 2 C, as specified in the applicable Engineering Material Specific

、ation. 6. Upon completion of heat aging allow the assemblies to cool to 23 +/- 2 C before opening. 7. Rate for adhesion and/or corrosion as described under Evaluation. 8. Using new plate assemblies as prescribed in Procedure 1 - 4, place the assemblies in the humidity cabinet for 14 d. 9. Upon compl

、etion of aging allow the assemblies to cool to 23 +/- 2 C before opening. 10. Rate for adhesion and/or corrosion as described under Evaluation. Evaluation Degree of Adhesion 1. Separate the specimen from the plate manually if either surface has adhered to the plate. 2. Note the degree of adhesion nu

、merically by applying the following rating system: Rating 1: Complete separation of both plates. No indication of adhesion. Rating 2: Slight forcing is necessary to separate plates. Moderate adhesion to 1 plate but specimen can be separated cleanly. FORD LABORATORY TEST METHOD BV 123-01 Page 4 of 5

、Copyright 2000, Ford Global Technologies, Inc. Rating 3: Considerable forcing is necessary to separate plates. Considerable adhesion to 1 plate but specimen can be separated cleanly. Rating 4: Considerable forcing is necessary to separate plates. Considerable adhesion to one plate. Specimen can be s

、eparated in 1 piece but surface fibers remain adhering to 1 or both plates. Rating 5: Specimen is torn or delaminated upon separation of plates. Cannot be removed from plates without further tearing. Must be scraped from the plates for complete removal. Degree of Corrosion 1. After removal of the sp

、ecimens, examine both plates carefully for surface stain and corrosion, using a 3 - 5 x magnifying glass as necessary. 2. Note the degree to corrosion numerically by applying the following rating system: Rating 1: No surface stain or corrosion. Rating 2: Surface stain or discoloration present but no

、t corrosion as defined by pitting or erosion of 1 or both plates. Rating 3: Trace of corrosion. A few small spots on plates with faint out-line of parts of specimen. Rating 5: Moderate corrosion. Numerous corroded areas on plates. Rating 6: Excessive corrosion. Plates completely corroded with consid

、erable pitting or erosion. Note: In the case of excessive adhesion, a thin knife or steel blade may be used to separate the plates. Exercise care to avoid damage to plates or specimens. Disregard adhering fibers and corrosion within 2 mm of outer diameter of the contact. Chemicals, materials, parts,

、 and equipment referenced in this document must be used and handled properly. Each party is responsible for determining proper use and handling in its facilities.
