    2、s procedure describes the method for detecting the corrosiveness of lubricating oils to polished copper strips. The polished copper strips are immersed in the test oil for a specified time and temperature after which they are removed, washed and compared with the ASTM copper strip corrosion standard

Equipment Required Stainless Steel Forceps Laboratory Oven Test Tube - 25 x 150 mm 30 mL Test Oil Copper Strip 3 inches long, 1/2 inch wide, 1/16 to 1/8 inch thick, drawn from electrolytic copper ingots or bars conforming to ASTM specification B 5. Copper strips are to be prepared to ASTM D 130 s

    4、pecifications. These strips may be reused but should be discarded when they show pitting or deep scratches that cannot be removed or when they become deformed. Conditioning and Test Conditions All test values indicated herein are based on material conditioned in a controlled atmosphere of 23 +/-

    6、 2 C and 50 +/- 5 % relative humidity for not less than 24 h prior to testing and tested under the same conditions unless otherwise specified. Procedure 1. Place 30 mL of test oil, free of any suspended or entrained water, into a chemically clean 25 x 250 mm test tube. A small beaker may be used wit

    7、h a corresponding increase in the volume of test oil. 2. Polish copper strip in the following manner: Using successively finer polishing paper and removing polishing marks of the previously used grade of paper with the latter, finish with 240 grit silicon carbide paper on all six sides. The strip ma

    8、y be polished by hand or machine. The final polishing is to be done by hand in the following manner: Remove all grinding dust and dirt by immersing strip in iso-octane. Holding the strip in the fingers, protected with ashless filter paper, polish first the ends and the sides with 150 mesh silicon ca

    9、rbide grains picked up from a clean glass plate with a pad of absorbent cotton moistened with a drop of iso-octane. Do not touch the copper strip with the fingers. Clamp the strip in a vise or other suitable means and polish by stroking the absorbent pad with the abrasive grains over the main surfac

    10、es in a longitudinal direction. Clean all the metal dust from the strip by rubbing vigorously with clean pads of absorbent cotton until a fresh pad remains unsoiled. 3. Within one minute after completion of the copper strip surface preparation, slide the strip into the sample test tube and place in

    11、the laboratory oven at 210 F for 3 h or at the temperature and time indicated in the engineering specification. If the laboratory oven is used, add 1/2 h to allow time for the oil to heat up to testing temperature. At the conclusion of the test period, remove the test strip with stainless steel forc

    12、eps. 4. Immerse the test strip in knock test iso-octane. 5. Withdraw the strip at once and blot dry with filter paper. 6. Compare the test strip with the ASTM copper strip corrosion standards. Hold both the test strip and the standard strip in such a manner that light reflected from them at an angle

    13、 of approximately 45 will be observed. Care must be taken to avoid marking or staining due to handling the strips. Inserting the test strips in a flat tube stoppered with cotton will eliminate this problem. 7. When it is determined that the tested strip corresponds to one of the standard test strips

    14、, the relative classification number and suffix designation shall be assigned according to the following chart.
