、ocedure describes three test methods which are used to evaluate trichlorethylene used in vapor degreasing operations. Description of Tests Trichlorethylene is subject to chemical breakdown under certain conditions with the formation of acidic constituents which are corrosive to metal parts. The foll

、owing methods are used to determine the amount of acid formation and the stability of the trichlorethylene. Method A Determines the original acid acceptance value of the trichlorethylene which is a measure of the amount of acid which it will absorb. Method B Determines the degree of retention of the

、 original acceptance value after refluxing with and distilling from fatty acids. This test simulates the refluxing action of trichlorethylene and grease or oil in a degreasing operation. Method C Simulates the action of trichlorethylene on aluminum. It measures the retention of the original acceptan

、ce value after refluxing with aluminum chloride. Methods B and C are measures of the stability of the trichlorethylene under normal degreasing conditions. Apparatus Required Condenser Hot Plate 100 mL Erlenmeyer Flask For refluxing sample. FORD LABORATORY TEST METHOD AK 002-01 Page 2 of 4 Copyright

、- Original Acid Acceptance Value 1. Pipet 15 mL of trichlorethylene into a 100 mL Erlenmeyer flask and add by pipet 25 mL of alcoholic HCl solution. 2. Attach a water-cooled condenser to the flask, place on the electric hot plate and reflux for five minutes. 3. Remove the flask, cool and add 25 mL o

、f distilled water. 4. Add 1 mL of phenolphthalein and titrate with standard NaOH (0.1 N) to a pink endpoint. Calculate as follows: (A x B) - (C x D) x 0.04 x 100 = acid acceptance as % NaOH 15 x 1.46 Where: A = mL of methanol - HCl solution added B = normality of methanol - HCl solution C = mL of Na

、OH added D = normality of NaOH and 1.46 = Sp. Cr. of the trichlorethylene Method B - Acid Acceptance after Distillation from Fatty Acid 1. Transfer 300 mL of trichlorethylene to a 500 mL distillation flask. 2. Add 30 mL of oleic acid, attach a water-cooled condenser and distill 240 mL of trichloreth

、ylene into an Erlenmeyer flask. 3. Label the distillate. To 15 mL of it add by pipet 25 mL of methanol HCl solution and follow Steps 2 - 4 of Method A. Report as acid acceptance value (% NaOH) after distillation from fatty acid. FORD LABORATORY TEST METHOD AK 002-01 Page 4 of 4 Copyright 2001, Ford

、Global Technologies, Inc. Method C - Acid Acceptance after Exposure to Aluminum Chloride 1. Pipet 200 mL of the labeled distillate obtained in Method B, to a 500 mL Erlenmeyer flask. 2. Weigh 0.25 +/- 0.02 g of anhydrous aluminum chloride and add to the trichlorethylene. 3. Attach a water-cooled con

、denser to the flask and reflux for ten minutes. 4. Allow to cool for ten minutes and filter 100 mL of the sample through a close paper to remove solid aluminum chloride. 5. Determine acid acceptance value on 15 mL of sample using Method A. 6. Report as acid acceptance value (% NaOH) after exposure t

Chemicals, materials, parts, and equipment referenced in this document must be used and handled properly. Each party is responsible for determining proper use and handling in its facilities.
