    2、LLC Page 1 of 5 MECHANICAL PROPERTIES MEASUREMENT AFTER THERMAL PROCESSING OF ALUMINUM ALLOY SHEET Application This procedure describes the method for measuring the thermal response in heat-treatable aluminum sheet alloys. The thermal response indices that are measured using this procedure include:

    3、T52, T72, T73, T81, T82, Long Term Exposure Thermal Treatment (LTE), Long Term Thermal Stability (LTTS), and Minimum Retained Ductility after paint (MRD). Significance and Use Common to manufacturing operations, aluminum heat treatable alloys undergo significant changes in mechanical properties duri

    4、ng thermal exposure. Tensile testing provides information on the strength and ductility of materials under uniaxial tensile stresses. This information may be useful in comparisons of materials, alloy development, quality control, and design under certain circumstances. Applicable materials Heat trea

    5、table aluminum sheet alloys in a thickness range of 0.5 mm to 4.0 mm. Applicable Documents ASTM Standard B557 “Standard Test Methods for Tension Testing Wrought and Cast Aluminum Products“ ASTM Standard B918 “Standard Practice for Heat Treatment of Wrought Aluminum Alloys“ Conflicts In the event of

    6、a conflict between the text of this method and the references cited herein, the text of this method shall take precedence. Definitions Yield Strength (YS): 0.2% offset yield stress. Ultimate Tensile Strength (UTS): maximum tensile stress (engineering) Uniform Elongation (UE): % elongation at maximum

    7、 load Total Elongation (TE): % elongation at fracture Longitudinal Orientation (L): Tensile axis parallel to rolling direction Transverse Orientation (T): Tensile axis perpendicular to rolling direction Diagonal Orientation (D): Tensile axis 45 degrees to rolling direction FORD LABORATORY TEST METHO

Quench Delay: 15 seconds max 3. Air Quench: Air quench metal at a rate of 10C/s

    9、(2) from a minimum metal temperature of 500C to below 50C using forced air having a temperature of 25C (5). The quench rate shall be calculated using a linear curve fit of at least 4 time-temperature data points between 475C to 290C. 4. Natural Age: Exposure to ambient temperature not to exceed 24 h

Artificial Age: 230C (5) peak metal temperature for a minimum of 5 hours with overall oven exposure not to exceed 6 hours T73

    12、 Thermal Treatment: 1. 508C (5) peak metal temperature for a minimum of 45 minutes with overall furnace exposure not to exceed 180 minutes 2. Quench Delay: 17 seconds max 3. Immersion Water Quench: 88C (-5, +10) peak water temperature for a minimum of 10 minutes 4. Natural Age: Exposure to ambient t

    13、emperature not to exceed 24 hours 5. Artificial Age: 225C (5) peak metal temperature for a minimum of 5 hours with overall oven exposure not to exceed 6 hours T81 Thermal Treatment: 180 C (2) peak metal temperature for 20 (1) minutes with overall furnace exposure not to exceed 30 minutes.     14、l Treatment + 2% Strain: 1. Pre-strain: Apply 2% pre-strain to tensile coupons within a tensile machine using an axial extensometer. 2. T81 Heat Treatment: see above T82 Thermal Treatment: 225 C (2) peak metal temperature for 30 (1) minutes with overall furnace exposure not to exceed 45 minutes. Lon

    15、g-Term Exposure (LTE) Thermal Treatment: 100 C (2) peak metal temperature for 2000 (24) hours. Long-Term Thermal Stability after T81 (LTTS-T81): the change in yield stress due to the LTE thermal heat treatment in material that has been subjected to the T81 thermal treatment. Minimum Retained Ductili

    16、ty after T81 heat treatment (MRD-T81): the total elongation measured after the T81 thermal treatment. Minimum Retained Ductility after T82 heat treatment (MRD-T82): the total elongation measured after the prescribed T82 and T81 thermal treatments performed sequentially. FORD LABORATORY TEST METHOD F

The forces used in determining yield stress shall be within the verified force application range of the test

    18、ing machine. Extensometers or digital image correlation techniques shall be used and verified to include all relevant strain information. Heat Treatment Ovens Heat treatments are to be conducted according to ASTM Standard B918 within an air chamber furnace. Thermal exposures are dictated by the abov

    19、e mentioned definitions. Preparation of Material Test Specimen Dimensions Rectangular tensile test specimens are to have geometry described in ASTM B557 and in each of the L, T and D orientations. Test Specimen Preparation Specimens may be fabricated with a standard milling machine or by electrical

    20、discharge machining (EDM). The milling machine may cause small imperfections on the edge of the specimen that must be filed down with 300 grit (or finer) sand paper for a smoother more uniform edge. Conditioning and Test Conditions All test values indicated herein are based on material conditioned i

    21、n a controlled atmosphere of 23 2 C and 50 5 % relative humidity for not less than 24 h prior to testing and tested under the same conditions unless otherwise specified. Procedure Quality Assurance Requirements Unless otherwise specified, the users of this procedure are responsible for all inspectio

    22、n and the test requirements specified herein, and may use internal testing facilities provided they meet the requirements of this procedure and any other test agencies acceptable to Ford Motor Company. Sampling Testing is conducted in all three orientations (L, T and D) each with a minimum of three

    23、(3) specimens per thermal treatment condition. Average data and calculate standard deviation. Reference Supplemental Data Reporting Package (Table 1) for data entry. Procedure Heat treatments are to be performed in a calibrated oven with thermocouples attached to sample material to ensure correct th

    24、ermal exposure times. Tensile testing is to be performed in accordance with ASTM B557. Analysis The thermal response indices detailed in this method are calculated based on average yield stress (YS) and average Total Elongation (TE) measurements from at least three (3) specimens per condition per or

    25、ientation. (b) Lot and coil number as well as production date and manufacturing location of the material tested. (c) Measured values of yield stress and uniform elongation from all tested samples. (d) Calcul

    28、ated indices based on average values of yield stress and total elongation.
