EIA-724 SEPTEMBER 1997 ELECTRONIC INDUSTRIES ASSOCIATION ENGI“G DEPARTMENT STD-EIA 729-ENGL 5777 i 323i.lb00 0585337 458 m NOTICE ELA Engineering Standards and Pubiications are designed to serve the public interest through eliminating misunderstandings

、 between manufacturers and purchasers, facilitating interchangeability and improvement of products, and assisting the purchaser in selecting and obtaining with minimum delay the proper product for his particular need. Existence of such Standards and Publications shall not in any respect preclude any

、 member or nonmember of ELA from manufacturing or selling products not conforming to such Standards and Publications, nor shall the existence of such Standards and Publications preclude their voluntary use by those other than EIA members, whether the standard is to be used either domestidy or intern

、ationally. Standards and Publications are adopted by EL4 in accordance with the American Nationai Standards Institute (ANSI) patent policy. By such action, EIA does not assume any liability to any patent owner, nor does it assume any obligation whatever to parties adopting the Standard or Publicatio

、n. This EIA Standard is considered to have International Standarbtion impiication, but the Intemational Electrotechnicai Commission activity has not progressed to the point where a valid comparison between the EIA Standard and the IEC document can be made. This Standard does not purport to address a

It is the responsibility of the user of this Standard to establish appropriate safety and heaith practices and to determine the applicability of regulatory limitations before its use. 9、age 1 I INTRODUCTION 1 .I 2. 2.1 2.2 PURPOSE This document defines a Product Life Cycle curve model for use by the electronics industry to standardize the terms and definitions used to describe the life cycle status of a product When required by the customer, a component or piece of equipment needs

、to be identified as to where it is in its life cycle. Such information can be useful when specifying parts for use in new systems or as replacements in existing systems. This information shall be classified by phases or stages on the Product Life Cycle curve. The same classification shall be used ac

、ross the electronics industry. The time remaining in the phase or stage and the time until the end of the products life are also required. The time must be expressed in years. This information should be reviewed by the IA annually for data accuracy. All member suppliers shall be solicited for this i

、nformation. Non-member information may be included through agreements with the EIA. The IA is the owner of the published information. 14、ife Cycle R but the rate of growth decreases near the end of this phase. Risk analysis and appropriate contingency planning must also be an integral component of part selection for this stage. The probability of obsolescence diminishes rapidly; but, parts in this phase must also be evaluated against

、 the cost and availability limitations prior to being considered for use in new system design. 3.2.3 Maturity (Stage 3) In the maturity phase, sales peak and then start to level out toward the end of the phase. Suppliers have the capacity to meet the demand and good device stability should result in

、 minimal changes and high quality. The probability for obsolescence is the lowest in this phase. Depending upon the lifecycle and reliability objectives of the system, the parts in this phase are highly recommended for use in new system design. 3.2.4 Saturation (Stage 4) In this phase, sales level o

、ut and suppliers start to cut back on capacity by the end of this stage. During this phase some technology leading suppliers may start to migrate to the next generation technology, and second tier suppliers may need to be qualified to sustain a viable supplier base. Some marginally competitive suppl

、iers may also elect to exit the marketplace. The probability of obsolescence starts to increase slowly. The parts in this phase may be very cost-effective for the near term. Appropriate use of equivalents in the design and good evolutionary planning may allow parts in this stage to be used in new de

、sign depending on the system life cycle requirements. 3.2.5 Decline (Stage 5) In this phase, both sales and capacity decline fairly rapidly. This normally is due to new technology introduction, which has resulted in a more cost-effective or improved component; social trends; or other environmental f

、actors. In this phase, most of the technology leaders are exiting the business in favor of new opportunities with second and third tier suppliers left to support the product lines. Additional, costly qualification efforts may be required to support the product for the near term. Suppliers build only

、 limited quantities. The probability of obsolescence increases rapidly in this phase. Product in this phase should be avoided for use in new system design unless robust equivalent device qualifications and evolution planning can demonstrate a cost-effective solution. 3.2.6 Phase-Out (Stage 6) In thi

、s phase sales and capacity fall more rapidly to an absolute minimum level. Suppliers start discontinuing parts rapidly. The probability of obsolescence is at its peak for the product manufacturing horizon. The end of this phase is termed “Discontinued Manufacture“ (DM). Parts in this phase should be

、 prohibited for use in any new or modified system design. STD-EIA 724-ENGL 2777 W 3234b00 0585345 751 I ELA-724 Page 5 4. CUSTOMER INFORMATION LEVELS (CIL) 4% ALGORITHM EIA OEM Customers require Product Life Cycle information. The levels and amount of information vary. The following are the recommen

、ded “Customer Information Levels” and the algorithm required to establish the information. Level i - Only the Stage is needed for each Standard/Specification (Design Code) item. This Stage shall be the same as in level 2 information. Level 2 - The Stage, YS, and YTEOL are needed for each Standard/ S

、pecification/ Commercial Part (Ordering Code) item. When an item has more than one supplier, use the stage provided by each individual supplier the average of all of the suppliers calculated by the EIA. Exceptions are to be resolved by the EIA when two or more suppliers have wide variances in stages

、. The YIS and YTEOL shall be determined by averaging the years provided by all suppliers. Level 3 - The Stage, YIS, and YTEOL are needed for each Specl Item Supplier (Ordering Code) item. This is the data the suppliers have provided, so no further processing is needed by the EIA at this level 5. DAT

、A ACQUISITION PROCESS 5.1 SUPPLIER DATA INTERCHANGE (SDI) The suppliers will review the Product Life Cycle at least once a year. The preferred method of data interchange shall be via electronic data spreadsheets. The spreadsheets shall be Microsoft Office compatible (preferably Excel) or a mutually

、agreed upon alternate format. The spreadsheets will be transferred using the following mediums, listed here in order f preference. 1. Electronic mail - preferably Microsoft Mail compatible 2. Floppy disk 3. Hard copy - Used only as a last resort or when it expedites results. c STD-EIA 724-ENGL I997
