Y6 7-A and 96 7-B. jormulated under the cognizance of EIA Working Group P-8. h on Magnetic Tape ) 1. SCOPE These methods cover the determination of tensile yield force, te

    7、nsile force at break, and tensile break elongation of magnetic tapes. This standard was prepared because no other comparable industry- accepted document relating specifically to the subject matter contained herein is in existence. 2. SIGNIFICANCE The tensile yield force and tensile force at break of

    8、 a magnetic tape are an indication of the ability of the tape to resist distortion or breakage as a result of mechanical stresses encountered in use. The tensile break elongation is a measure of the permanent extension of the tape under excess tensile load. a 3. DEFINITIONS 3.1 elongation of a tape.

    9、 Tensile yield force - The instantaneous tensile load which results in significant permanent 3.2 Tensile force at break - The tensile load at the moment of a rupture of a tape. 3.3 Tensile break elongation - The elongation at the moment of rupture of a tape. 4. APPARATUS The apparatus shall consist

    10、of a suitable film testing machine, grips, a specimen cutter, a width measuring device, and a thickness gauge. 4.1 Film Testing Machine A testing machine of the constant-rate-of-jaw-separation type, equipped with a device for recording the tensile load carried by the specimen and the grip separation

    11、 during the test. Both of these measuring systems shall be capable of being calibrated to an accuracy of +2% by the methods described in ASTM E4.     12、2 Grips A gripping system that minimizes both slippage and uneven stress distribution should be used. Note: Flat, smooth grips should be used wherever possible; however, serrated gips lined with thin rubber, crocus cloth or pressure sensitive tape may be needed for some specimens. Air-actuated grips

    13、 are advantageous for materials that tend to “neck“ into the grips since uniform pressure is maintained throughout the test. 4.3 Specimen Cutter A device that will give straight, clean, parallel edges with no nicks, uncut areas, or other imperfections shall be used for cutting the specimens to the p

    14、roper width, where this is required. In most cases, the tape specimen will be tested in the width supplied. 4.4 Thickness Gauge A suitable thickness measuring device, capable of being read to 0,00002 inch (0.00050mm), shall be used for measuring the thickness of the specimens. Note: Where specimens

    15、of tape with a base thickness of 0.001 inch (0.025mm) or more are being tested a thickness measuring device capable of being read to 0.0001 inch (0.0025mm) may be substituted. 4.5 Width Measuring Device A suitable width measuring device, capable of measuring to at least 0.003 inch (0.075mm) shall be

    16、 used for measuring the width of the specimens. 5. CONDITIONS 5.1 All measurements shall be made under the following atmospheric conditions, 70 f 5F (21 k3“C) 50 f 5Y RH Note: If it is anticipated that the tape will be used under conditions of temperature or humidity substantially different than the

    17、 above, the measurements should be made under those conditions. 5.2 under which the measurement will be made.     18、cimens shall consist of strips of uniform width and thickness at least 7 inches 6.2 The tape specimens will be tested as received, subject to the following: a. inch (25.4mm). The width of the specimen shall not be less than 0.12 inch (3.0mm) or greater than 1.0 b. Tape specimens will be tested in th

    19、e width supplied, subject to the limitations of step a. above. If the tape is wider than 1.0 inch, a specimen of suitable width shall be cut from the center of the tape. If the specimen is cut in a direction other than longitudinal, the direction of cutting shall be indicated in the report. The utmo

    20、st care shall be exercised in cutting specimens to prevent nicks or tears which are likely to cause premature failure. Note: Microscopic examination of the specimens may aid in detecting flaws due to sample or specimen preparation. c. specimen between the grips. The width shall be uniform to within

Wherever possible, the test specimen shall be selected so that thickness is uniform to 7. PRBCEDURE 7.1 Setting up film testing machine a. than one-third FSL. Select

    22、a full scale load value (FSL) such that the load at specimen rupture will be greater b. Set the rate of grip separation at 2.0 inches per minute (50mm per minute). Note: When testing tape made of film whose tensile properties are known to be strongly dependent upon the rate of elongation, the rate o

    23、f grip separation used should be selected to simulate as closely as possible the rate of strain to which the tape may be subjected in use. c. Balance, zero and calibrate the load weight and recording system by the methods described in ASTM E4. 7.2 Verifying width, thickness measuring devices a. Cali

    24、brate the thickness measuring device by the methods described in ASTM D374. b. Check the calibration of the width measuring device.     25、003 inch (0.075mm). Compute the average of these values. Record the average width, rounded off to three significant figures. Check that the individual measurements are within +2% of the average value. 7.4 Measuring thickness of specimen Measure the total thickness of the specimen at several points t

    26、o the nearest 0.00002 inch (0.00050mm). Check that the thickness is uniform to within 10% of the average thickness. Note: Where specimens of tape with a base thickness of 0.001 inch (0.025mm) or more are being tested they may be measured to the nearest 0.0001 inch (0.0025mm). 7.5 Obtaining the load-

    27、extension curve a. Set the initial grip separation at 4.0 inches ( I OOmm). b. Place the test specimen in the grips of the testing machine so that it is centered in the grips with its long edges parallel to an imaginary line joining the points of attachment of the grips to the machine. Tighten the g

    28、rips evenly and firmly to the degree necessary to minimize slipping of the specimen within the grips during test. c. Start the machine and record load vs. extension or grip separation. Use a chart speed of 50 inches per minute until an elongation of 10% is reached then switch to a chart speed of 2 i

    29、nches per minute for the remainder of the test. o Note: The higher initial chart speed magnifies the yield region of the curve so that graphical calculations can be performed more easily. d. Continue extending the specimen until it ruptures. Note: If tear failure occurs, indicate this in the report

    30、and discard the results. 7.6 Repeat steps 7.3,7,4 and 7.5 above for a minimum of 3 specimens. 8. CALCULATION OF RESULTS 8.1 Calculating tensile yield force ( 1 % offset method) a. Draw a tangent to the initial linear portion of the load-extension curve, intersecting the zero-load axis. The intersect

    31、ion of the tangent line with the zero-load axis will be taken as the origin of the curve.     32、k. RS-362 Page 5 b. Construct a line parallel to the tangent line intersecting the zero load axis at a point corresponding to 1% elongation. Read the load value at the point where this line intersects the load-extension curve to three places. c. Divide the tensile load at the point of intersection b

    33、y the average width of the specimen (from step 7.3 above). The result shall be expressed in pounds per inch (kilograms per mm) and reported to three significant figures. Calculating tensile yield force (3% elongation method 1 a. Construct a line perpendicular to the zero-load axis, at a point on the

    34、 axis corresponding to 3% elongation. Read the load value at the point where this line intersects the load ex- tension curve to three places. b. Divide the tensile load at the point of intersection by the average width of the specimen (from step 7.3 above). The result shall be expressed in pounds pe

    35、r inch (kilograms per mm) and reported to three significant figures. Note: For tapes based on oriented polyethylene terephthalate films, the force to produce a 3% elongation in this test will be a very close approximation to the tensile yield force determined by the 1% offset method. This approximat

    36、e method should not be used for tapes on other base film materials, unless it IS confirmed that the results obtained will be comparable to those obtained by the 1% offset method. Calculating tensile force at break a. Read the load value at the moment ot rupture to three places. b. Divide the load at

    37、 break by the width of the specimen (from step 7.3 above). The result shall be expressed in pounds per inch (kilograms per mm) and reported to three significant figures. Calculating the tensile break elongation Divide the elongation at the moment of rupture of the specimen by the initial gauge lengt

    38、h of the specimen (equals initial grip separation) and multiply by 100. The result shall be expressed in percent and reported to three significant figures. 9.
