    5、MOPLASTIC COVERED WIRE 0 (From Standard GEN-104 and Standurda Proposa.8 No. 557, No. 575 and No. 618 formulated under the cognizancs of the EIA Engineering Subcommittee SQ-18.1 on Color Marking, Thermoplastic Insulated Wire; and approved by the SQ-12 Committee on Wire and Cable.) 1. SCOPE 1.1 Genera

    6、l: This standard provides color marking for thermoplastic insulated wire or color mark- ing for thermoplastic jackets on wires and cables. In the case of transparent plastic jackets, the color marking may be applied to either the underlying insulation or to the surface of the jacket. 1.2 Application

    7、: Color marking shall be accomplished by use of either (1) solid colored insulation, or (2) body color with other colored stripes. It is intended that these wires be interchangeable by color with textile braid wires. Where, in textile, braids consist of solid colors with tracer threads of contrastin

    8、g colors, this standard recommends that the base colored stripe (wide stripe) shall be used in lieu of solid colored textile braids. (See example in par. 3.3). NOTE: It is further recognized that the application of colored stripes to solid colored insulations may give poor color rendition, especiall

    9、y dark colored stripes on dark colored insulations, and these combinations are not recommended by this standard. 2. STRIPES 2.1 General: A “base-stripe” or wide stripe shall be applied as a continuous helical stripe. It shall be distinguishably wider than any of the succeeding stripes in the designa

    10、ted color group. All stripes shall be separated from each other and frpm each group by not less than the width of the succeeding stripe. The maximum number of stripes shall be three (one wide and two narrow). All colored stripes shall be applied in the same direction. 2.2 Marking: Marking of the col

    11、ored stripe on the insulation shall be accomplished by the use of inks or materials, having pigments or dyes least affected by (1) light, and (2) the various plas- ticizers used in the manufacture of the thermoplastic insulation. The colors shall remain within the limits of the latest issue of EIA S

    12、tandard GEN-1O1A and be (1) fast to the effects of operating temperature and humidity, (2) free from fading under normal operating and storage conditions, (3) impervious to abrasion during handling (see par. 2.2.1), (4) unmistakably readable under incandescent lighting, and (6) be non-conductive. 2.

    13、2.1 Stripe Dhrabilicy Test: Durability of the colored stripe shall be evaluated in the following manner. A short specimen of finished wire, bearing color coding to be tested, shall be firmly clamped in a horizontal position with its upper longitudinal surface area freely exposed. A small diameter st

    14、eel mandrel-usually a needle (.026” diameter) shall then be repeatedly rubbed over the insulation surface at the stripe so that the longitudinal axes of mandrel and specimen shall be at right angles to each other, and the point of tangency between the two shall be very small. A specified weight affu

    15、red to a jig above the rubbing mandrel shall control the thrust exerted normal to the insulation surface. A motor driven reciprocating cam mechanism and counter shall be used to permit an accurately measured number of .abrasion strokes-all equivalent in thrust mag- nitude-to be delivered in a conven

    16、iently short time. The length of the stroke in one direction shall be y8 inch and the frequency of the stroke shall be 120 strokes per minute (each stroke con- sisting of a 180” rotation of the eccentric drive mechanism). The number of strokes, applied under controlled conditions before a color codi

    17、ng is removed, shall indicate the probable life of the color coding under conditions of abrasion in service. A sample of previously untested wire shall be mounted in the specimen clamp. A 600 gram (total weight) shall be applied through the rubbing needle to the marked surface. Where very resilient

    18、types of insulation (such as polyvinyl chloride) are abraded, the weight shall be reduced to 260 grams. The counter shall be set at zero and the drive motor started. The specimen shall be carefully observed throughout the progress of the test, and as soon as a continuous line of the underlying color

    19、 identification is removed, the number of abrading cycles shall be recorded. This procedure shall be repeated two additional times using different wire specimens preferably 60 feet apart. In no case shall the number of cycles required to remove the color code be less than 260 cycles (500 strokes). N

    20、OTE : Machines, commercially available to test magnet wire for abrasion resistance in accordance with MILW-683, are suitable for this test.     22、iameter over the marked surface exceeds .O47 inch; when the diameter over the surface on which the stripe is applied is less than ,047 inch, then the width of the base stripe shall be not less than 2/9 the nominal diameter of the striped surface. The narrow stripe shall be not less than i/z the widt

    23、h of the base stripe. NOTE: With single-color insulations, even on small diameter wire, all of the EIA Standard Colors are normally readable, if they conform to the Standard Color Limits. When, however, the color stripes are reduced to l/e4 inch, even on a white background, they may become impossibl

    24、e to distinguish. 2.5 Stripe Spacing: On single stripe coloring, the spacing between stripes shall be not less than twice the width of the base stripe. On multiple stripe coloring, the spacing between stripes shall be not less than the succeeding stripe width. 3, COLORS 3.1 Colors and Abbreviations

    26、ark limits) and colors shall conform to the latest issue of EIA Standard GEN-101A. 3.2 Where three color stripes are used, the second narrow stripe shall be of higher color number than the first narrow stripe (see 3.3). 3.3 Use of Numbers for Color Designation: The number shown in the above table ma

    27、y be used to designate the colors as follows: A solid black wire would be number O, a red wire number 2, etc. Number 92 would be a white insulation with a red base color stripe. Number 926 would be a white insulation with a red base color stripe and a green tracer stripe. A textile braided construction in existence using red body color with a green stripe to be replaced with a thermoplastic construction in accordance with this standard should be color coded as 925. A three stripe color marking, involving a red base stripe with green and blue narrow stripes shall be specified as 9256.
