NDP re 3.5.3.1(1) Pointing The minimum depth of joints to be pointed is given in NA.D.1, paragraph (4), d). NCI re 3.6.3 Protection against freeze/thaw cycling (NA.3) When building

、 in cold weather where there is a risk of frost, all materials and walls shall be properly protected against freezing (e.g. by enclosing them). (NA.4) The use of anti-freezing agents is not permitted. Freshly laid masonry shall be protected against frost, e.g. by covering. (NA.5) The use of de-icing

DIN EN 1996-2/NA:2012-01 7 NCI Annex NA.D (informative) Cavity walls NOTE Provisions from various parts of DIN EN 1996 have been grouped toge

、ther in this Annex in order to provide an overview. This Annex does not contain any new provisions. NA.D.1 General provisions with regard to execution (1) The space between the two masonry leaves of a cavity wall generally a loadbearing inner leaf and a non-loadbearing outer leaf is referred to as a

、 cavity. The cavity may or may not contain thermal insulation. (2) Cavity walls may be designed as uninsulated walls, i.e. the space between the two leaves does not contain any thermal insulation. The width of the cavity thus corresponds to the distance between the two masonry leaves. (3) Cavity wal

、ls may also be either partially or fully filled with thermal insulation material. In this case, the thermal insulation may consist of either a single layer or several layers of thermal insulating material. (4) The following applies to non-loadbearing outer leaves (i.e. veneer walls or facework) tied

、 to a loadbearing backing wall (inner leaf): a) The design shall be based on the thickness of the loadbearing inner leaf only. b) The minimum thickness of outer leaves is 90 mm. Thinner outer leaves are treated as cladding as specified in DIN 18515. The minimum length of any masonry piers in the out

、er leaf that only have to withstand loads from the outer leaf shall be 240 mm. The outer leaf should be supported over its entire length and width. Where the support is interrupted (e.g. by corbels) all masonry units shall be supported on both sides. c) The outer masonry leaf shall be made of frost-

、resistant masonry units or rendered non-frost resistant masonry units. The rendering shall satisfy the requirements of DIN EN 998-1 in conjunction with DIN V 18550. d) Outer leaves with thicknesses of 115 mm should be laterally supported at vertical intervals of around 12 m. They may extend up to 25

、 mm beyond their support. If such leaves do not extend over more than two storeys or they are supported at every second storey they may project beyond the support by up to 38 mm. Allowance for such projections shall be made in the analysis of the bearing pressure. Where exposed joints are not finish

、ed flush, they should be raked out to a depth of at least 15 mm and then pointed. e) Outer leaves with thicknesses t equal to or greater than 105 mm and less than 115 mm are not permitted to exceed a height of 25 m above ground level and shall be laterally supported at vertical intervals of around 6

、 m. Gables not exceeding 4 m in height in buildings up to two full storeys high do not need any additional lateral support. Such outer leaves shall not extend more than 15 mm beyond their supports and the mortar joints should be finished flush. Where exposed joints are not finished flush, they shoul

、d be raked out to a depth of at least 15 mm and then pointed. DIN EN 1996-2/NA:2012-01 8 f) Outer leaves with thicknesses t equal to or greater than 90 mm and less than 105 mm are not permitted to exceed a height of 20 m above ground level and shall be laterally supported at vertical intervals of ar

、ound 6 m. Gables not exceeding 4 m in height in buildings up to two full storeys high do not need any additional lateral support. Exposed joints should be finished flush. Such outer leaves shall not extend more than 15 mm beyond their supports. g) The masonry leaves shall be connected by stainless s

、teel ties with a German national technical approval (agrment) or by stainless steel ties in accordance with DIN EN 845-1 whose application is covered by a German national technical approval. The following applies to ties with the shapes and dimensions shown in Figure NA.D.1: vertical spacing: not more than 500 mm; horizontal spacing: not more than 750 mm; clear distance between the masonry leaves: not more than 150 mm; diameter: 4 mm; general purpose masonry mortar of group IIa or better;
