The responsible German body involved in its preparation was DIN-Normenausschuss Feuerwehrwesen (DIN Standards Committee Firefighting and Fire Protection), Working Committee NA
、 031-03-03 AA Wasserlschanlagen und Bauteile. This document is the revised version of DIN EN 12845:2009. CEN/TC 191 develops standards on components for sprinkler systems. Some of these (e.g. sprinkler systems as in DIN EN 12259-1) are covered by Mandate M/109 under the EU Construction Products Dire
、ctive and must therefore meet the “essential requirements” of the relevant standard according to the German Bauproduktengesetz (Construction Products Act) and bear the CE mark. CEN/TC 191 is also responsible for developing rules for the design and installation of automatic fire extinguishing systems
、. These standards do not cover construction products but installations, which are not included in the scope of the German Construction Products Act, and which are therefore not permitted to bear the CE mark under the EU Construction Products Directive. In addition, the German law does not stipulate
、that sprinkler or water spray systems be designed and installed in accordance with standards. With the publication of European Standard EN 12845 there is now a uniform technical rule for the design and installation of sprinkler systems in Europe. EN 12845 contains general rules in the form of minimu
、m requirements, and a higher level of protection (than that prescribed here) can be provided at any time. Particular, deviating requirements for specific sprinkler systems, e.g. due to local conditions or specific risks, are not specified in this standard. In addition to being extremely effective fo
、r fighting fires, sprinkler systems installed according to the rules of technology acknowledged in Germany are very reliable. For instance, according to statistics of the German loss prevention company “VdS Schadenverhtung GmbH”, the long-term average success rate of sprinkler systems installed acco
、rding to VdS guidelines is higher than 98 %. Because of their effectiveness and reliability, in Germany such sprinkler systems are also accepted by the building inspectorate, meaning that under certain circumstances some required construction measures may be dispensed with if such a sprinkler system
、 is present. In Germany this is regulated in various special Lnder regulations such as the Industriebaurichtlinie MIndBauRL (Model Directive on structural fire protection in industrial buildings). It should be noted that other standards and guidelines are based on a different safety philosophy than
、that represented in the present standard. If single elements are taken from such technical rules and combined with the requirements of this standard, the level of protection which this standard is intended to provide might not be reached. It is not intended that the requirements of this standard be
、combined with those in other technical rules. If requirements are modified or replaced, compliance with the standard is no longer given. The specifications of this standard do not take the place of those derived from legal or insurance requirements. German insurance guidelines may place stricter req
、uirements on the availability and effectiveness of sprinkler systems, for instance as regards the design and testing of components, the organization, equipment and qualification of installation companies, the monitoring, frequency and scope of periodic inspections, etc. On the other hand, such guide
、lines may prescribe less strict requirements regarding operating times, the pipe array, or maintenance measures. DIN EN 12845:2016-04 3 NOTE It can be assumed that sprinkler systems installed in accordance with German insurance guidelines provide the level of protection described in the present stan
